Hey everybody, this is Heidi St. John. Welcome to the podcast. It’s Meet-My-Friend-Friday and my friend Roxanne Parks is here today and we are going to spend some time today encouraging parents and talking about the lie of not enough.

Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.

Thanks for tuning in today everybody. I want to say thank you to everybody who’s been leaving reviews for the podcast over at iTunes. Everything you guys are doing is making such a big difference in allowing us to get the podcast out to people. We really want to hear from you. We’d love to hear your show ideas and people who you would like to hear from and if you want to reach out to me about the podcast, go here and fill out the form— and keep those reviews coming on iTunes. We really appreciate it.

Coming up, I will be in Virginia on the 14th of September for the Heidi St John Conference, and then if you’re planning a little bit ahead, my women’s conference comes one time a year to the Pacific Northwest here in Vancouver, Washington on the 12th of October. Then on the 19th, I’ll be bringing my women’s event to Lincoln, Nebraska. So encourage your friends, come on out. Bring your neighbor, bring your daughter. If she’s about 14 years of age or older, it’s a great opportunity. We’re going to spend a day and an evening in the Word of God, and I promise you, your lives will never be the same. The gospel changes us. It doesn’t leave us where it finds us. It changes us.

That is one of the reasons I’m so excited about my guest today. Roxanne Parks is here with me today and she’s got some experience—she knows a few things about motherhood. She and her husband have been married for 33 years. They have four adult children ranging age from about 25 to 30, and she’s a brand new grandma. So we’re going to be talking about all things on motherhood today. Roxanne, welcome to the podcast.

[Roxanne] I am super excited to be here with you, Heidi.

[Heidi] Finally! So you have traveled to the studios from the great state of Oklahoma.

[Heidi] Exactly.

[Heidi] So what’s it like in Oklahoma? What’s your favorite thing about Oklahoma?

[Roxanne] Oh, I just love Oklahoma. It’s so green and so full of, what I think is just great, all-american kind of people.

[Heidi] Yeah. Yeah.

[Roxanne] The kind that are friendly in the Walmart line.

[Heidi] You’ve been in my neck of the woods for a few for a few days. How does it compare? The Oklahoma folks are the sit on the front porch folks.

[Roxanne] Yes, rocking chairs on the front porch.

[Heidi] One of the things I love is rocking chairs on the front porch. What has been your impression of my neck of the woods?

[Roxanne] I have fallen in love with Oregon and the Columbia River Valley.

[Heidi] And the people aren’t as scary as you hear about on the news. Well ANTIFA is, but you didn’t go to like an ANTIFA rally.

[Roxanne] No, but I will tell you this. I told my husband just this morning— I have fallen in love with Oregon. It’s an Oregon I never even knew existed. Your coastal beauty is incredible. The mountains and then the Columbia River— gorgeous! Just stunning. I actually am shocked by what I didn’t know about this area.

[Heidi] Now you’re at the studio at Firmly Planted and we are just across the road from Oregon in Southwest Washington state. It has been a thrill to have you here to my house. A fun couple of days. But I am so excited because I’ve known you for a long time. I love your ministry to women. I love your heart for mothers in particular, women in general but mothers in particular, and to be able to see what God’s done with you these many years. You’re a speaker and an author. If I’m going to describe Roxanne Parks in a sentence and I’m introducing you to my listeners who have never heard of you before— how would you describe what God’s put on your heart in terms of ministry?

[Roxanne] Women and Christians live so far below our calling and our privilege. Oftentimes we just are overwhelmed. We’re running on a performance treadmill and we’re exhausted with all the things to do. I spend my life trying to believe I’m a soul that speaks life, giving truth into the hearts of women. The life giving truth is found in the Scripture. It’s her only solid ground in a shaky world. When you don’t know what’s coming and going in your house, or with your kids, or with your schedule—where’s your solid ground? I just gotta have some solid ground. I gotta have some peace. I’ve willingly exchanged sanity days when I felt like— do I have any choice in the peace equation? Is there any solid ground that I can stand upon and live a sane, peaceful life? I have found that to be true. You are right.  It is in the word of God and it is His promises, they are life giving.

[Heidi] And they don’t change. So much of why we see moms and women, well men too, there are a lot of men who listen to this podcast, so shout out. Sorry guys. I have met a guy not too long ago and he was like— you really need to like give a little more love to the guys. The principles apply. So whether you’re a woman or a man, we’re living in a stressful world right now and it’s changing rapidly. What I hear from listeners is—we’re so frustrated at the changes that are happening and we lose our peace in the middle of it. We forget that God doesn’t change. He’s not surprised by what’s happening. He’s not sitting up in heaven going— well, I didn’t see that coming. He’s not doing that. He offers the same piece and the same joy to us now as He offered in the days of Moses, as He offered in the beginning of creation, at the beginning of our nation. He’s the same.

[Roxanne] Yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

[Heidi] Yeah, it’s true. But still, we struggle. You wrote a book a few years back called Are You Enough?  I love it because today we’re going to talk about the lie of not enough, and men believe it too: I’m not enough to be what my wife and my children need to be, so I’m going to emotionally check out. I’m going to stay at the office. I’m not enough. The mom is thinking: I’m not enough to homeschool. I could never do that. I don’t have the patience for that. Or the mom who just thinks she’s not gonna make it through the teenage years. Moment of silence. We’re all asking the same question.

[Roxanne] It’s the same battle. There’s a battlefield here.

[Heidi] Yes, oh my goodness.

[Roxanne] The war is on for our minds in this whole equation of not enough. Yeah. Who says we’re not enough? Who said that? Where’d that assignment come from?

[Heidi] Right? It started in the garden of Eden when the snake whispered to the woman saying— are you sure?

[Roxanne] Did God really say that? Are you sure you can make it till death do you part? Are you sure you can homeschool? Are you sure you can do this life? Even Heidi and Roxanne, don’t we have to remind ourselves? It doesn’t matter that we know the truth. We have to remind ourselves of the truth all the time.

[Heidi] We just did it before we started recording. We’re just praying together like— Lord, we can do it. People really need to hear that that’s real life. I don’t care if you’re a president Trump, I don’t care if you’re Heidi St. John, or Roxanne Parks. We are people at the end of the day. We are created in the image of God. God said each one of us has been created on purpose with a purpose. This is who God is. The enemy, which we read in John 4, wants to come kill, steal, and destroy. The first thing he steals is our identity. He lies to us and that steals your joy. Then will you wind up with these mopey moms, and frustrated fathers who have believed this lie that they are not enough.

So let’s talk about this for a minute because you wrote this book. I’m going to go through a little bit of it with you. I know you guys are going to be encouraged and you’re gonna want to get her a book. I will link back to her book in the show notes today.

Let’s talk at the beginning when you have a title— Chapter One: It’s all Patty’s fault. In my mind I’m like— it’s not Patty’s fault, it’s so-and-so’s fault. We all have our Patty, what’s up with that?

[Roxanne]  We’re blamers, I cannot believe how much, it’s that shame thing that started in the Garden of Eden. God never intended there to be shame but it started in the gardening. We want to blame someone. “It’s all Pattys fault” She gave me this dream that homeschooling would be this: do a little bit of school, have lunch, and go to the golf course.

[Heidi] She lied to you.

[Roxanne] She totally did. Was it Patty that was lying? Who was lying?

[Heidi] So in all your years of homeschooling, nobody ever came down the stairs in the morning and said— hey mom, we got up an hour and a half early, we finished our math, we dove into prepositions because we knew that you’d be stoked. Then the laundry folded itself and the bird saying? Did that never happen?

[Roxanne] No.

[Heidi] Get Out.

[Roxanne] Yeah. Yeah.

[Heidi] Instead, it was just hard and humbling and amazing.

[Roxanne] Hard and humbling and amazing. I love that Heidi. But you know what? I went into marriage the same way. So we could talk about anything. I remember thinking of marriage—Oh absolutely! Yes, til death do you part. Better or worse. Rich or poor.

That was the illusion of perfection there. Then the illusion of being a perfect parent too. All these levels, and I think they are as beautiful as God intended them to be. When He said— I created you to be a masterpiece and I signed you to good works,  that woman comes into the equation and every one of these things. There’s an enemy of our soul that’s really trying to rob kill and destroy our joy and take our families and take our homes and take our territory. As we have discussed, it’s actually making me mad.

[Heidi] I think it’s okay to say this isn’t right.

[Roxanne] What makes me mad is that he comes to rob kill and destroy our joy. What makes me even madder is that we let him. We’re asleep at the wheel. We’re not not finding our truth. We are not getting into our solid ground every morning. We are not getting into the truth. If we don’t put ourselves in truth and in solid ground every day, over and over, then the subtlety of the liar creeps in because he’s all over the game. There is a battlefield out there. I’m a writing Bible Study right now called The Voices and the Choices— and I’m telling you, there are voices in our head every day, ladies and gentlemen, there are voices in your head. The voice of the Lord, the voice of the enemy, the voice of yourself, and the voice of the other.

Then we make the choices on these. I’ve been so overwhelmed by the battlefield of the liar, and the battlefield of the truth, and that these voices I hear all the time and then I’m making choices—and what in the world are we doing? Is there a choice to be made that can bring you sanity?

[Heidi] Yeah. Well, and I think we think too, that the answer to that is to get off the battlefield. The answer to that is just a wave of the white flag and say— Hey, this is too hard. It’s too frustrating. I see this all the time. That’s why I started the podcast out by saying— the husband who just feels like, you know what? This is way too hard. These wife and these kids, this estrogen, this estrogen riddled woman, I cannot figure her out. One minute, she’s one place. The next minute she’s in another place. I remember long time ago, my husband asked me— he was just like, dude, I don’t actually get you. I was like—get in line. I don’t get me either. I’m trying real hard to be the woman that I want to be… the one I know God wants me to be. And shoot, if it’s not challenging and frustrating and difficult, I know that there are men who are listening to this right now and they’re thinking— I’m not enough.

Roxanne’s you’ve been married for 33 years. That’s gotta be grace. I’m coming up on my 30th anniversary and I know that you and I have observed the same thing. A generation of young men and women who were never mentored. They didn’t see a good example, or their parent’s marriage wasn’t good. So they went into it with the lie in the back of their head. The lie is— well you know, if this doesn’t work out then we can do something different. We go into it with, like you said, with a very unrealistic idea of what it actually is. Then those lies are whole lot easier to listen to because it seems like we didn’t understand and we didn’t and that’s okay. Because God does.

[Roxanne] That’s exactly right. I love the whole idea of the lean not on your own understanding and acknowledge Him in always because he’ll make the paths straight. Because there’s a lot of things I don’t understand. I don’t understand how I could have picked to marry this guy and then I could have been so confused about some things. It’s not like you know everything the day you get married, nor did he.

I tell Brian all the time— you’re married to me and you have to handle me, but I never get away from me. I sit in my own chair. At least you can get away from me. Sometimes I love the admission that says —sometimes I’m confused about myself. We need to give ourselves more grace because I can not give other people grace if I don’t get myself some. The Lord came to give us this grace to be the beautiful mess that we are. I called it #beautifulbutmessy because I think the beautiful aspect is that God created us, He knit us on purpose with purpose, for purpose. He knows us. He numbered our days. The messy equation is that sin was knit in the human condition. If we can remember that every single soul is beautiful and every single soul is messy—we’re not going to have a human in our life that isn’t, we’re not going to have a marriage that isn’t.

And instead of saying this is not enough of and copping coping out on everything—you just go get stronger by navigating through it and you navigate it through it based on the principles of truth that are the only thing give you any kind of strength. Your strength is His strength, not yours because— I don’t know about you, but every now and then I’m done. In ne of my chapters, I talk about the letting and the end of my rope. One of the very best place you can be is at the very end of yourself or at the very end of your rope. So if you’re a listener today and you feel like—oh my gosh, I cannot do my own life, I feel like I’m at the end of my rope, I feel like I’m hanging on by thin thread— I just want you to know, I believe that’s a very best place you can be if it will let you die unto yourself and let go and let the Lord come in and fill you with His truth, his promises, my gosh mama—you’ve got to know His promises. They are your hope for freedom. That’s happened to me over and over in life where I felt like I can’t even do my own life now. And I can just hear the voice of the Lord beckoning me: My yoke is light, come unto me, lay down your heavy yoke and join into me and pick up my yoke for it. Let me carry it for it is light.

One of the greatest things I’ve been doing in the last few years is I feel like I just spend my life living in a slow dance of intimacy. I’m telling you, if you could imagine slow dancing in an intimate place with the greatest love of your life, the greatest knitter, the greatest knower, the never disappointing—and you’re just in a slow dance of love…and you can get in that slow dance every day of intimate love, relationship with the Lord, the savior, the redeemer, the restore of your soul—that just changes everything else. It changes my people. It changes my schedule, it changes everything. Intimacy with the Lord has changed everything and it makes me realize that I am enough because of who He designed me to be, not because of my agenda.

[Heidi] Yeah, it’s right. You’re pointing out something that Jesus said in His word over and over again. He said— my grace is sufficient because my power is made perfect in weakness.

[Roxanne] Yes. Yes.

[Heidi] It’s actually found there. And so for the mom or the dad is listening and they’re like— no, I’m not enough. One of the things you talk about is this idea of surrendering, really letting go. This life is all about surrender. That’s what I wrote in The Guide to Daylight that if we don’t learn surrender, we’re never going to find peace because peace is found in surrender. If you can take a minute and just talk to that mom or dad is at the end of their rope. Talk to those people right now who are really at the end of their rope.

[Roxanne] Okay. Well, one of the things when I write about the voices and the choices— the battlefield of what’s going on in our mind is just huge. I want to turn down all the voices, but the voice of the one is the voice of the One that knows me. He numbered the hairs on my head. He numbers the days of my life. I just want to encourage women to turn out, tune out all the other voices and listen to the voice of the one and the promises that He offers us. One of the challenge I think we all have is that we have a control freak inside of us. The control freak wants to manage our husband and our children just like we think that we want to manage. This is a problem.

[Heidi] She’s watching me and I’m like— that might or might not be me. I might have a little control freak in me.

[Roxanne] I know it’s a pride thing. So it’s common to man and we all have a little control freak in us. I will tell you, the sooner I identify that I do have a control freak and that I just basically asked that control freak to stand down. Do I really want my will my way or do I want his will his way? If my will, my way, is not yielding me a life of peace and harmony and provision— I don’t want my will my way. I loved years ago when I came to the beautiful surrender of…..I read a book called The Grace of Yielding. The challenge was to have the spirit of Christ within us where it says— Lord, if you could take this cup from me, great. But if you can’t, then, however, not mine but thine. I know that God assigned me in my marriage, with my tribe, my people that were knit in my heart or my wound, either one, they’re called children. I just decided to ask the Lord to have his will his way in my every day. So every morning when I get up, I literally speak or think the mantra: not mine, but thine today. I open my hands up in my bed asking God that I live open-handed with my day and that he be in the driver’s seat of the day.

Two other things that really changed everything for me was—obedience has everything to do with our peace. When he said to focus on that which is praiseworthy, he wasn’t kidding around. I find that in marriages it doesn’t really matter if your husband isn’t doing this or that—you are asked as a woman who loves Jesus to focus on that which is praiseworthy and that’s life-giving. That not only works in your marriage, it works in your homeschool, it works with your family, it works with your job.

[Heidi] So, flesh it out. When you say focus on the thing that’s praiseworthy, let’s say that you’re frustrated with your child. Or let’s say you’re frustrated with your husband or husband with his wife, and there’s that thing that they’re doing that’s just driving you nuts. You’re waking up in the morning and you’re thinking about it and he’s coming home from work and you’re still pretty mad cause it hasn’t been addressed. Maybe it’s practical, maybe you’ve said, hey, please don’t put your underwear on the floor next to the bed. It’s the little things that add up over time. How does that person who’s stuck in that negative shift out of that by the power of the Holy Spirit? What does it look like to actively take a step to do something different?

[Roxanne]I have found that as I have focused on that which is praiseworthy and as I have had a grateful heart—I don’t think an anxious heart and a grateful heart can abide in that same heart. You make a choice— you live in anxiety or you live in gratitude as one or the other. I have chosen to be grateful and to focus on that, which is praiseworthy, it seems like it expands people around me. Say you have a husband that’s got a long list of things and there’s only a few things that he does that are praiseworthy and you start focusing on praiseworthy. We know Heidi, that men need respect more than they need love. I take those things that are praiseworthy and I start speaking them out to him and it just puffs his chest up a little bit when I’m speaking that which is praiseworthy versus nagging like a dripping faucet of all the things that aren’t praise worthy. I don’t care that they’re all true.

[Heidi] Because that’s not the point.

[Roxanne] Exactly. Obedience is the point. God rewards obedience and when we focus on that which is praiseworthy and we speak that which is praiseworthy and in all of our children and all of our marriages— it expands because it puffs up our: oh my gosh, you like me for that? Well then let me do this. It expands the person. If you focus on those things that bring death, which are those things that are not life giving, which those things are not praiseworthy, that disobedience brings the reward of a death feeling in your heart. With my husband and with my children, if I make a list of everything that’s great about my husband—you would think I’m married to a rock star of the university! I know that if I focused on and told you everything I didn’t like about him, it doesn’t really matter that they’re true— it just robs my joy and brings death.

There’s an obedience equation that’s into all this lying and all this going on that we need to be in the Word, we need to know the promises. We need to know the solid ground and then we need to obey. When God says to trust me, we need to obey that. When God says, and lean not on your own understanding, and when God says to focus on that which is praiseworthy, and when he says in all things to give thanks.

[Heidi] Wait, so are you saying that there’s an element of personal responsibility here?

[Roxanne] We want to blame everybody for our life. I was listening to one pastor, he just like—we’re like Delbert dumb: We crawl up the ladder, we fall off the ladder and then we blame God. There’s so many things that we go around blaming. I love when you said —so is there an element of personal responsibility? Yes. Read Your Bible. Yes, find truth, find peace, find sanity, but don’t go around living a stressed out life and then blaming everybody.

[Heidi] Yeah, that’s exactly right. You are. You are enough to do everything you have been assigned to do. You’re actually more than enough. That’s a mindblower for those of us who don’t even feel enough. I closed this book in the story of More Than Enough and it was about these hungry people and they said feed 5,000 people and all they had was this lunch —it had two fish and some loaves of bread and they’re like, well this isn’t enough. Well, I don’t know about moms who are listening. I feel like, oh my God, it’s two fish and a loaf of bread and I’ve got to feed all these people for all the rest of my life. I’ve got to feed this marriage to this people, this life, this thing —I just don’t have enough. All I have in my little lunchbox is all I have in my lunchbox. But you know what that story teaches us?— is that when we give our lunch and everything we have to the giver. When we give everything we have back to the giver of all of it—he multiplies it.

[Heidi] He’s not an adder, He’s a multiplier.

[Roxanne] It ended up not only being enough, it was more than enough. There’s 12 baskets leftover. So I find that when I’m in my control freak and I’m managing my two fish and my five loaves, and I’m trying to feed the people, it’s never enough. But when I surrender and I give everything I have unto greater glory — he just multiplies it. Like, you and I were talking about you’re getting ready to have a multiplied schedule because right now you’re thinking there’s not enough time in your life to do all the things you have to do.

[Heidi] Yeah. You right. Yeah.

[Roxanne] And we’ve asked God to multiply your time. You and I know he can. He is the multiplier—but he’s not a multiplier when were blamers, when our grip of control is around everything. He’s a multiplier when we’re obedient and listening to the voice of the One and when we’re focusing on that which is praiseworthy, and when we’re giving thanks. So we get down to the scriptures and we actually obey and trust and let him do the work. We don’t own the glory and we don’t own the blame.

[Heidi] Yeah. And God wants it. God wants the glory. You’re sitting here in the studio at Firmly Planted. You’ve seen what God has done, which is a miraculous story of provision. But it also is a reminder that God is the one who, who gives the increase. And he’s the one who gives us the strength to homeschool, the strength, to stay married, the strength to encourage our spouse when we just feel like we don’t have any encouragement left in us to give to anyone. It comes from Him. It all comes from Him. And Jesus said, I didn’t come so that you could just have life. I came so you could have it to the full.

[Roxanne] More abundantly.

[Heidi] So you can have an abundant life. That’s what He promises and that’s what He delivers.

[Roxanne] I know you are a strong woman and I probably would consider myself a strong woman, but I strive every day to bow down and let go and let God— and choose His peace and walk in His peace. The woman that wants to do it and own it and manage it is gone. She’s exhausted years ago. I say to women very often when I speak to them — Hey Mama, are you tired yet? Are you tired enough yet? Are you tired of your anxiety? Are you tired of not liking your people? Are you tired of the performance treadmill? Are you exhausted yet? Well, if you think you can keep managing it, just keep going girl. I just got so beautifully exhausted that I surrendered and said: Lord, you have got to do my life through me. I just knew he would do a better job than me doing it through me.

The peace that is on the other side of surrender— I just want to say wake up women.

[Heidi] It passes understanding.

[Roxanne] Yes, wake up women, wake up. There is a solution. He is a knower and a knitter and a lover of your soul. He wants to be in the intimate, slow dance with you because he wants to answer all your questions of the why that you aren’t enough and that you don’t have enough to stay married, to stay the mom, to stay the homeschooler, and to stay the course— you have everything you need to do, everything he has you to do and he will complete the good work within you.

[Heidi] Yeah, and that’s, that is the message. That’s the gospel. That’s the gospel in a nutshell. Roxanne Parks , you are a treasure. You are a national treasure right here in Vancouver, Washington.

[Roxanne] Thank you.

The Power (not pressure!) of Hospitality| MSI Week Two—817

God has extended safety and belonging to us, and He calls us to do the same to others. It would work well for the enemy to trick people into believing that the practice of hospitality requires a large budget, large amounts of time, or a large home. All of those are lies. Your house doesn’t have to be perfect and your budget doesn’t either. Being hospitable is important to God, and He speaks of it in the Word as one clear way we love others.

Hey you guys, this is Heidi St. John. Thanks for tuning in today. Today’s episode number 817 and this is Wednesday, September 11th. This is the day we study MomStrong International. We’re talking about the topic of being an ambassador for Christ in the culture today and also we’re going to take a little bit of time to remember and reflect on 9-11.

Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.

This is my favorite day of the week here at the podcast. We talk about the study that’s happening at MomStrong International. If you haven’t joined us over there yet, this is a great time to do it. We’re on week two of our study on what it means to be an ambassador. I love that we’re talking about this because there has never been a more important time for God’s people to be who God says that we are—and that is to be ambassadors. The Bible says that God is literally making His appeal through us when He says: come back to me. So it begs the question— are we being ambassadors for the Lord Jesus? What does it look like to be an ambassador? The Bible teaches us that we have been set apart.

2 Corinthians 6:14-17 For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord.

Let’s come before the Father in prayer. Lord Jesus, I thank you that you have given us Your Word as a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. I thank you for faithful men and women who teach Your Word and live it. Lord, as we talk a little bit about what it means to be an ambassador, Father that you would give us all the courage to live by our convictions, the courage to be who you say that we are are. Father, I pray that we would be as set apart people. I pray that we’d be set apart in the privacy of our own hearts where no one else is watching. Lord, I pray that you will help me to be the woman that you want me to be. I pray that you’d help us to study Your Word, that we could be workman who do not need to be ashamed, who can rightly handle Your Word and apply it in grace and love. We love you, Father. We invite You into what we’re doing here today. Lord, I would pray especially just a prayer for those who have been deeply affected by 9-11, those who are still mourning the loss of loved ones, that still feel the sense of loss. I pray for our nation. We’re more divided now than we ever were. We need your help. Help us, Lord, to be the people that You want us to be. In Jesus name, amen.

I’m going to look really quickly to the study at MomStrong International. If you haven’t checked it out yet, this is a great time. The study is about $8 a month. It is beautifully illustrated. You guys are gonna love it. I got a letter from a mother the other day who said that it was her first time seeing the Bible Study. I recently got a letter from a mom named Sylvia— I loved it so much. I know this isn’t Mailbox Monday, but I’m going to read this anyway. She said:  Hi Heidi. I tell everyone about your podcast, but I’m dropping you a quick note today because today is the first day I have opened the Bible study after signing up last month with MomStrong International, and I just want to tell you—wow, it is breathtaking. The graphics and colors are incredible. I can’t get over how beautiful it is. I can hear your sweet voice throughout the study and I’m seriously blown away. I wish I had done this so much sooner. Thank you for your kind heart toward us mamas and pointing us to the Word of God to the truth. We need it so much. Be encouraged today.

Sylvia, that did encourage me I forwarded that to the writing team. There are a whole bunch of us that are working to get that study out to you guys every month. And my daughter, Savannah, does the Kid Strong. She’s got two little guys of her own and she’s expecting her third grand baby in the spring. Pretty excited about that. My friend Jen does the majority of the writing for the Bible studies for me right now as I’m in the middle of another book project. Sierra is in charge of the graphics. We’ve got a team of editors. Of course, my staff is always helping us go through that. We choose the topics very carefully, pray over them and then ask the Lord to help us as we get them out to you. So I hope you guys are encouraged and are really gonna be active in the Word of God. That’s why we’re doing it because God says that we are who he says we are.

Today, I want to talk a little bit about hospitality because it doesn’t get talked about very much. An ambassadors who take their job seriously do everything in their power to uplift and support their home nation and their ruler. As believers, we represent the Lord Jesus. Do we represent Him in a way that not only advances His principles and ideals, but represents His tremendous heart?

2 Corinthians 5:20-21 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” God has extended safety and belonging to us, and He calls us to do the same to others. According to a recent Barna survey, 28 percent of evangelicals believe they are gifted by God to teach, while only 3 percent say they have the gift of hospitality. It would work well for the enemy to trick people into believing that the practice of hospitality requires a large budget, large amounts of time, or a large home.

These are lies. Some of my favorite moments was when Jay and I were very young and he was starting out in the pastorate, we’re of having visitors over from our church for lunch and not having a lot of furniture and a little tiny home and me making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and just sitting on the floor and getting to know people. You don’t have to have a large budget or a large house. That’s really good news! Because even though not many people feel gifted with hospitality, we’re all given the call and opportunity to practice hospitality! Being hospitable is important to God, and He speaks of it in the Word as one clear way we love others.

But I want to encourage you, don’t mistake a love entertaining for genuine hospitality because they’re not the same thing. I think this kind of trips us up a little bit. My friend Jen Schmidt wrote a book on hospitality. Last year I had her on the show, her book was called: Just Open The Door. If you need ideas for entertaining and having people over, she’s got some wonderful ones. There’s a difference between hospitality and entertaining. Entertaining is delightful, creating just the right menu or having perfect decorations for a special celebration is a great pleasure, but biblical hospitality is a much earthier affair; it’s the day-in day-out warmth of having a heart open to seeing the needs of others and doing what you can to meet them.

Biblical hospitality is also not at the expense of caring for our immediate families. God is not calling us to regularly hang our kids (or our men) out to dry so we can make meals for others who are hurting or host three events per week for different church ministries. Best hospitality practices take into account an overstimulated introverted child or a teen with two tests in school the next day. Your event may still need to happen but create space without emotional guilting for the introvert to grab some alone time.

My friend Jamie Martin was on the show talking about The Introverted Mom and introverted kids. We’re studying this a little bit in digging deeper. Jesus doesn’t just make us subjects of His kingdom like far off peasants, but He adopts us into His family and with family comes responsibility.  We are not just subjects but sons and daughters, and all family members have roles and tasks that signify belonging, and those are ever changing. Asking for wisdom and exercising biblical discernment is not only for doctrine, Moms, it’s for daily realities of loving our families well!

When you invite a new couple at church to grab coffee with you or meet your family for a bike ride after work one evening, you’re saying you have value to God and therefore you have value to me. When you allow friends over to play, those kids will notice if you know their names and notice a new haircut. Keep your door open through the loud rough-and-tumble golfball-through-the window years.

I’ve had a lot of that happen. We had a guy that lived behind us who kept accidentally shooting his BB gun into my sliding glass door. Yeah. That actually wasn’t that fun. I’m going to try to forget about it. But guess what? We got to know our neighbors. It gave us a chance to talk to them. Last week when my family was doing a bunch of work for the Homeschool Resource Center, trying to get it up and ready for this week, I watched my two grandsons and my two nephews and my eight year old daughter, and they all like—we had a slip and slide going outside, a lot of stuff going on. It was hot. They finally got cold enough playing in the ice cold water that was coming out of my hose, that all these kids wanted to get in the hot tub. I gotta tell you, I didn’t want him in that hot tub. I was like— for the love, they’re gonna take their dirty feet and they’re going to act like dolphins and whales and Belugas in the hot tub. I could just feel this little voice in the back of my head like—nope, it’s not your hot tub, it belongs to Me. Create a memory. So we did. And yes, they did pretend to be Beluga whales. I actually believe that they were navy ships this time. Was it messy? Yes. Was it loud? Yes. Did my hot tub get dirty? Yes. But you know what? Those kids are going to make a memory and I hope they’re gonna know that I loved them in the process. So we need to ask ourselves the question— what makes our home show we love Jesus?

What makes us the fragrance of Christ as Christ’s true ambassadors. It’s genuine, authentic faith, that we live out. That means we’ve got an open home and that’s going to require bracing ourselves sometime. It’s sanctifying. Can we just be honest? Moment of silence, because not all of us really liked to have company all the time. Some of us are just tired. We discovered when we open our home and we begin to just have people into our lives, God uses us, He uses us. Jesus uses open homes, just like He uses open hearts. Jesus-girls who love Him and are willing to be less-than-pinterest-y and just live life with those around her are incredibly important part of being ambassadors of Jesus Christ.

So I’m going to read Romans 12 to you guys because part of being a dedicated Christian and offering your body as a living sacrifice is showing hospitality of strangers. So we’ve got to figure out what that looks like. So let’s look at a Romans 12: 9-15 —Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.

So we’re getting lots of instructions in this short little passage in Romans. He’s teaching us to do a bunch of things as members of the church, as members of the body of Christ. He’s saying—cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another, honor one another. Don’t be lacking in zeal, keep up your spiritual fervor and serve the Lord. He says, be joyful and hope. Be patient in affliction. Be faithful in prayer. Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. You notice he never says if your house is clean— share with the Lord’s people who are in need. He never says if your laundry is done, if your counter is not messy, if your living rooms cleaned up, practice hospitality. No, he says— look for a need and then open your door. Bless those who persecute you. Bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice and mourn with those who mourn. I love this. In verse 16 he goes on to say, live in harmony with one another.

Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. Romans 12:16

I think sometimes our desire to be seen as very good at entertaining and all that, it really comes from a place of pride and the Apostle Paul is saying, come away from that practice hospitality. It’s so important as people who are a set apart people, we should be known for our love of other people. We want to speak the truth, but we should also be known for our love. The Bible teaches us that we are stewards of the gospel. We have been given an incredible responsibility. Matthew 28:18-20— And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

The Lord saying, we have a responsibility to make disciples, to teach them what we learned. We can’t do that if we’re not getting in people’s lives and loving people the way that God says to love them. This is part of being an ambassador for the Lord Jesus. Open up your home to be hospital. We’re spending the whole month talking about being an ambassador for the Lord Jesus and what that looks like. There’s a ton more information. You’re going to love Kids Strong this month, teaching your kids to go out of their comfort zone too—and they do that by seeing you do that. We’re going to flesh out the practical outworkings of hospitality. What does it look like to have a teen girl from church over to play with your little ones while you fold the laundry? It’s going to give you some downtime, maybe some brain space— but the heavenly investment is that you’re going to get to hear her dreams or her troubles and you’re going to get to speak grace into her life and hopefully you’ll become a safe place for her. There’s a lot of ways that we can practice hospitality and be the set apart people that God wants us to be. We can raise young ambassadors also. So, is what we’re going to study in 1 Peter 4:8-9.

Before I go today, I just want to encourage those of you who are remembering as I am today. The events that took place on September 11th, 2001. I remember where I was. I was sitting on my bed in our bedroom nursing, our infant son, and I was watching television and I don’t know if I turned away or what happened, but the next time I looked up at the television, I saw a plane flying into one of the World Trade Centers. I’m pretty sure it was the first one.American Airlines flight 11. I thought it was an ad for a movie. I literally thought— Oh wow, this is weird. There must be a new movie coming out. When I realized our nation was under attack, I remember calling my husband at work and just saying— please come home, this is serious, it’s bad. Of course it was bad and we learned as the day unfolded just exactly how bad it would get.

A lot of us have young kids who don’t remember it. We always talk to our children about that time in history and about why our country— the TSA and all those things sort of happened as a result of that. We also pray for those who lost family members and loved ones in the attacks on 9-11. There’s a lot of really great information out there because as I recall, in New York City that particular day, it was a beautiful day. September 11th. Hello, it’s, it’s late summer. They were just going about their business like everybody else. When that coordinated suicide attack against the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC happened, everyone onboard those planes and nearly 3000 people on the ground were killed. A fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, killing everyone on board after passengers and crew attempted to wrest control from the hijackers. I think it’s important for us always to pause and to remember the freedom that we have in this country. The importance of protecting our nation. The importance of praying for those people that would intend to do us harm. Sometimes we can get far enough away from it and we think— oh, that will never happen again. The truth is we need to be praying for our nation. So I found a quote and I’m going to end today’s podcast reading it to you. I thought it was a beautiful way just to say we remember we will never forget

For the husband who told his wife he loved her before his plane went down in a field. For the wife who stopped in the stairs to call her husband to say— I will love you forever. For the mothers and fathers who kissed their kids goodbye that morning, and then died. For the policemen who rushed in with the firemen and others, only to die themselves. Today, tomorrow, and a hundred years from now, we will remember.

Hey you guys. Happy Monday! Happy Labor Day! Today is Monday, September 2nd—this is episode number 813—this is mailbox Monday. I’ve got a lot of questions to answer and I hope that when we do that, you’re going to be centered in the truth of God’s Word and refreshed and courage in the process.

So stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.

All right, so a couple of things going on me tell you guys about. First of all, on September the 14th I will be in Fredericksburg, Virginia for my women’s conference Faith That Speaks. This is the last time I’ll be presenting Miracle Worker, and we’re just two weeks away. It’s going to be a sweet time of fellowship, so if you’re in the Fredericksburg area, that’s right between Washington, DC and Richmond, Virginia—come and spend the day with us. Baltimore, Charlottesville— that includes you guys too. This is the only time I’ll be out in your area for their foreseeable future. So September 14th it’s a one day event and I promise you it’s going to change your life. So come on out. We’re really excited to have you. My next event will be here in Vancouver, Washington. If you want more information on where I will be checking out HeidiStJohn.com/podcasat.

Today is mailbox Monday and one of the things I love to do is talk to you about where you are in your life right now and hopefully steer your heart and your mind back to God’s Word. Lots of questions come in to me for Mailbox Monday. There are a lot of struggles that we’re facing today and many of them have to do with the shift that we’re seeing in the culture. Lots of questions come in about sexuality, and transgenderism, and marriage, and education. All of these things are things which the Lord has really put on my heart and I am passionate about encouraging you. One thing I want to just encourage you to do, I’m really glad that you send me questions at Mailbox Monday—keep doing it, but I also want you to know that if you’re listening to this and you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, meaning you have said: Lord, forgive me for my sins, I know that I’m a sinner, I cannot do this thing without you, I need your forgiveness, I want to spend eternity with You. And you ask Him to be the Lord of your life and to forgive your sins—then you become a born again believer and the Bible says that you then have access to….you do have the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit.

So when you have a question, and again, I’m not trying to get you to stop sending me things because I love the conversation, I think it’s important—but I don’t want to cripple you. I don’t want you walking away from it thinking that you can’t find some of these answers on your own. I think we need each other and the conversation is good and the conversation is helpful. But ultimately, if there ever comes a day when you don’t have a mailbox Monday or you don’t have somebody that that can answer your questions, I want to encourage you to go to the Word. This is why I am so passionate about MomStrong International. This is why we started the Women’s Bible Study over there and I hope that you’ll check it out at MomStrongInternational.com. If you’re not a mom, you can still benefit from that. It really is a Bible Study that’s taking you a verse by verse, line by line, to the Scriptures as it relates to a particular topic.

So whenever we’re talking about anything, we want to take our hearts and our minds and make them captive to the Lord Jesus. In other words, we want to take everything and we want to filter it through the grid of God’s Word. And so that’s what I’m going to be doing today as I tackle some of your questions here at Mailbox Monday. That’s also what we do at my women’s conference. So if you ever see that I’m in your neck of the woods, one of the things I love to do is take an hour and we have people submit questions and then my staff helps me kind of go through them. I think in Kansas City we had several hundred questions and I maybe had time for 15 or 20 of them— but I’ll sit down for an hour and just talk to you and we’ll chit chat about what God is doing and how we can know what a wise and godly answer would be to any given situation.

Now, some of these situations are more in more gray areas and others, but most of the time we can look to God’s Word and find clear direction. So that’s what we’re going to try to do today.

Heidi, I am a young mom of three under the age of four. Moment of silence. You got it, Mama. She says at times things feel pretty overwhelming. I’m from a family of nine and I love having a big family, but I don’t know if I see that many from my life. My question is— how do we as Christians, knowing God doesn’t give us more than we can handle, decide how many children that we should have? At times I feel like this is enough, but then I’m too young to make that decision. Thanks, Angela.

All right, Angela. So a couple things. First of all, I’m going to encourage you, if you’re young, please don’t make a permanent decision. I cannot tell you how many parents I have met over the years who have said to me that they wish that they hadn’t had a tubal ligation, wish they hadn’t done a vasectomy. They’re making, in some cases, irreversible decisions to really put a stop to their fertility. Fertility is something that the Lord gives us for a very small window of time. And I know it feels like a large window, because we (women) all can think about when we started our period to where we are now. But, it really is a very small window of time in the grand scheme of our life.

I’ve told my daughter, who’s married now and is expecting her third baby — so we’re super excited! In the spring, I’m going to have a little grandbaby. I can almost smell the newborn. I’m so excited. But I told her, as she and I were talking about having babies and what that means…. I said: it is, to my way of thinking, and I’ve had a hysterectomy now and cannot have children anymore—but, it’s a miracle. It’s miraculous. I said it’s like magic and I don’t need nobody emailed me. I’m not talking about magic like spells and stuff like that. I’m just saying the feel of it, the miraculous, beautiful, amazing thing that a husband and wife can come together and create a child—it’s just amazing. And in the culture we don’t value children anymore. So, hold off on the permanent decision. That’s all I’m trying to say.

There’s a couple of things in your email though that I want to address. First of all, this wasn’t something that you asked, but I noticed that you said that God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. And that’s kind of a half truth. So that comes from a verse in the Bible that we hear all the time. 1 Corinthians 10:13— no testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, He will not let you be tested beyond your strength. But with the testing, He will also provide a way out so that you would be able to endure it.

So a lot of believers think that this verse says that God’s not going to give you more than you can handle. First of all, the statement is not true. There are lots of godly, mature, wonderful Christians that I know who have been diagnosed with horrible illnesses, who’ve been wound up in car accidents, who have lost their homes to financial crises or whatever. And we need to have a really good understanding of what the Bible means to be able to break it down. The words in this verse have lots of different meanings: temptation, testing. So we want to look really closely at the verse. No temptation, or really—it’s test, because it’s the same word if you look at it in the Greek. So no test is overtaking you that’s not common to man. God’s faithful. He’s not going to let you be tempted or tested beyond your ability, which is beyond what you are able. But with the temptation or with the test, He will also provide a way of escape. So when Paul says that God isn’t going to give what is beyond what you’re able, he means: not beyond what you’re able with the help of God. So we always have the help of God, that dependence on grace. 2 Corinthians 9:8 God is able to make all grace abound to you so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you can abound in every good work.

So then the question isn’t — what are these hard things going to be that come to me? The question is— will God’s grace ever just disappear up and leave? No. The Bible says no. God’s not going to give his people trials that he’s not going to walk alongside us with and sustain us. So that’s what, that’s kind of what you need to to know.

This idea that we will never be tested, that God’s not going to give us more than we can handle— It doesn’t mean we’re not gonna walk through really hard things. The other thing that I kind of want to point out to you gently is that when we look at children and we say— well God isn’t going to give us more than we can handle. I think sometimes we throw our hands up in the air and we say(I’ve talked to people on both sides of this discussion and there are good people who will disagree)— we are not going to use birth control, and that means I’m depending on the Lord.

Well, the truth of the matter is we as women, have cycles. We have a pretty good idea of when we can get pregnant, right? So we understand how our cycle works and we sort of figured that God is a God of order, not chaos. My mom got pregnant with me when my brother was three months old. So Aaron and I are less than a year apart. We’re 11 months apart. My mom has told me repeatedly that that was the worst year of her life, just having us so close together. But guess what? She survived. And you will too. I think a lot of this is really looking ahead and not being bound to a set of rules, but rather trusting the Lord. And by trust in the Lord, I’m not saying—don’t practice birth control. I think there are good Christians who can disagree on this, but I am saying I think we need to see children the way that God sees them. The world says children are a burden. God says children are a blessing.

And I always tell women— I never talked people out of having babies. Jay and I never anticipated having seven children. But I can tell you right now that the biggest blessing in our lives, one of the biggest blessings by far-and-away: are our children. We made a decision to pour into those kids very early on and now, half of them are in their twenties, the other half are coming up really quickly—and I got to tell you, you’re in a really tough season right now because you’re a mom of three under the age of four and you can’t see that it’s gonna get easier, but it is going to get easier.

I would encourage you, don’t make any permanent decisions. Don’t live by the law, but rather with your husband come before the Lord in prayer. The Lord may say—you know what? Take a break. You don’t have to have six children under seven. So take a break. The Lord knows your body. You know what you can handle. The Lord has given you insight into your own body and into your own emotions. So partner together in prayer with the Lord and talk about it with your husband. If at some point you find yourself expecting again and you weren’t ready for it, then we want to embrace what God says is true about children. God says that children are a blessing. They’re a blessing. We know this because that’s exactly what God tells us in His Word over and over and over again.

All you have to do is look at what the Bible says about having babies. I feel like that’s where the world is messed up. But we can make it a legalistic thing and then we have people in the church arguing about having seven children versus having three children. I just think— man, what a waste of time when we argue about this stuff. Let’s talk about what’s really important and what’s really important is viewing children the way God says that we should look at them. So Psalm 127 starting in verse three, children are a heritage from the Lord, they are a gift. The fruit of the womb is a reward like arrows in the hands of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. Blessed it is the man who fills his quiver with them. That’s an incredible promise that you’re blessed when your quiver is full of arrows!

Genesis 1:28 God bless him. He said: be fruitful and multiply. Jeremiah 1:5 before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. There’s so much there. I mean, we could talk about this all day long, but what I want to just encourage you to see your children as a blessing, as a gift. We’ve got almost 20 years between our oldest and our youngest, so I spaced our seven out quite a bit. So I didn’t have any kids that were 12 months apart or 15 months apart. Most of our kids are at least two years apart, which I think kind of helped me a little bit because then I didn’t have five kids under five, kids under the age of seven. I spaced them out a little bit. But the trick always is — Lord, help me see these children the way that you see them. Then labor with your husband in prayer.

It’s a beautiful, beautiful thing that the Lord has given us this ability to have children and to raise them for His glory. I just want to encourage you to see it that way. You are doing awesome. You’re doing awesome. You got your hands full.

Another question came from a mom in Lee’s Summit and I want to address it today because it kind of goes along with Angela’s question. She was saying she really wants to get off the bench and onto the battlefield, but she’s got five kids at home. She’s homeschooling them— her oldest child is eight and she just feels like she’s not getting off the bench. And I was like— Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, you, you got all these children at home— you’re off the bench! You are encouraging them. I mean there’s emails that you can send.

There are seasons for us to be super engaged on the battlefield. And then there are seasons when we play a more supporting role.

My point in telling you guys to get off the bench is never to say that being on the battlefield is more important than raising your children. That would defeat the purpose 100% . You are doing that as you’re raising your children to love and serve the Lord and to walk in His ways. That’s the promise in Deuteronomy 6 where we’re instructed to train up our children when we rise up and when we walk along the road and when we lie down. You take every opportunity that the Lord gives you and you train your children in righteousness and in so doing you are on the battlefield. It’s going to feel like more of a support role and as your kids get older, God will give you opportunities.

I think the main thing I’m always trying to encourage people is don’t just go— well I give up. Or— it’s not that important and it doesn’t matter, I can’t affect the culture. That’s not true at all. You can affect the culture. You can do all things through Christ who gives you strength. God’s given you a voice and He wants you to use it. That’s the reason behind my women’s conference Faith That Speaks. It’s why I wrote Becoming MomStrong—to encourage you to fight with all your faith and your family. There are seasons and those seasons look different.

Next question comes in from another mom and she says— Heidi, I write this with a heavy heart. I am so disappointed as I found out that my daughter who is in kindergarten was kissed by another girl in her classroom. I was very triggered by this due to my own abuse in the public school. My husband is talking to the teacher and the principal about the issue because I don’t think I’d be able to keep my cool in the situation. I want to pull my daughter out and homeschool her immediately. My husband does not want me to pull her out as she is doing well, other than starting to have potty accidents. I’m trying to pray about peace in this decision, but I continue to have horrible thoughts and dreams about possible abuse that my daughter could be encountering. I know he is coming from a place of love, but his view of public school is blurred with it being a safe place for children. Is this a matter in which I should submit? Or is this an issue I push as we have the means to homeschool.

I get this question a lot. These are a little bit different circumstances, but the bottom line question that you’re asking is— is this something that you’re going to really get into a knock down drag out with your husband over? And I would say do not get into a knock down drag out with your husband over this. Pray about it. Ask The Lord to soften his heart. Ask Lord to soften your heart. And I can’t tell because I don’t know anything about the situation, but you said that your daughter was kissed by another girl in the classroom—25 years ago that would have been a nothing. So I’d want to find out what was the motivation. If you know for sure this was a sexual thing, that the child was making an advanc…. unfortunately, we’re sexualizing our children and so it is happening. I would say don’t jump too hard to the worst case scenario because you have been abused. Ask the Lord to give you wisdom and then pray, pray, pray for your husband, love your husband. You want to walk in unity together and so pray that he listens to you. If you feel like you have something that you’re trying to get across to him and he’s not hearing you, ask the Lord to help you speak it to him in a way that he understands and can hear your heart. If you feel like he doesn’t understand the dangers of the public school system look up my interview with Dr Pesta—that’s a great one. Google that one and listen to that one on what’s happening in the public school. I would never encourage you to fight with your husband over something like this. I would say pray for him, love him or maintain United friend, especially in front of your children.

They need to see that you guys are a united front and that you love and respect your husband. This is walking in right relationship with the Lord and then the Lord —He’s going to protect your daughter. Pray for her. God knows your situation. He knows what’s going on and you can keep telling your husband that you’re concerned and show him that you have the means to homeschool, but the moment you let it become a wedge between you, the enemy will have won—so don’t do that. You can do this. I will be praying for you.

I get so many questions like this every single week and just so you know, we pray for you guys. It really matters to us.

I’m out of time for today, but I want to thank you guys for listening.

I also want to encourage you, if you’ve not left a review for the podcast over at iTunes, my goodness, we really appreciate it and we really want to see the reviews grow over at Amazon and Barnes and Noble for the books I’ve written in the Becoming MomStrong series. If you’ve never done that, it would sure bless and encourage us if you would do that.  We really love you guys and we’re praying for you, praying that you get off the bench and onto the battlefield, off the sidelines and onto the front lines. But more than anything else, our prayer is that you would stay faithful. Thanks for listening you guys—have a great day and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday.

This podcast is brought to you by our friends at Evangelical Christian Credit Union.

Hey everybody, this is Heidi St. John. Welcome to the podcast. Today is Wednesday. It is the 28th of August. This is episode number 811 —we’re going to be talking about the fruit of the Spirit that is love. This is week four of the MomStrong International Bible study.

Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.

So lots going on in my life right now. Thanks to everybody who’s been praying for us. We’re kind of working our way through all the water damage, and the pipes in our house, and everything. We’ve been traveling, had a fantastic turnout in Kansas City last Saturday for Faith that Speaks, for my women’s conference. And speaking of the women’s conference, I will be bringing that conference to Fredericksburg, Virginia. That is just two weeks away. So if anywhere in the Washington DC area, greater Richmond, Virginia, come on out. I come out once a year and we’ve still got room for you and it’s going to be, I promise you,a day this is going to change your life. I will be there on Saturday, September the 14th — it’s just two weeks away. If you want more information about my women’s conference Faith That Speaks, you can find it HeidiStohn.com/events. I’ll link back to that in the show notes today.

But like I’ve been saying you guys, this is my heart. It is my heart to come and just equip you in the Word of God. The theme for Faith That Speaks, and this is the last one for the year, is Miracle Worker: The Life Changing Power of Following Jesus. We’re talking about at Faith That Speaks, is what it looks like to have your faith, not just be something that you carry around like a backpack, but rather that it infuses your entire being and you become a voice for the Lord in the culture. That’s what we’re supposed to be. We’re supposed to be ambassadors for Jesus Christ. Next conference is going to be October 12th in Vancouver, Washington. Early bird tickets are on sale now, but that rate ends on September 2nd. So if you’re in the Pacific Northwest and you want to come to the women’s conference Faith That Speaks in Vancouver, that’s going to be held on October 12th and the early bird rate for that is gonna end here pretty quick.

All right, lots of great things coming up for all of us this year. We’re getting back to homeschooling, right? A moment of silence. I know there’s a bunch of you who have already gone back to homeschooling. We never do it here until after Labor Day, but I know a bunch of you are back and I just want to encourage you— a couple of things right off the bat. A schedule is your friend. The schedule is your friend. Moment of silence for everyone who is not yet penciled out their life. That might be me. I wrote a book about this called The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Daylight, and if you are trying to figure out how you can fit your size 12 day into a size 10, that’s a great book for you can find an Amazon or in my Store. I’ll link back to in the show notes today, but lots of practical and a lot of great spiritual insight and information for you as you begin to plan your year and ask the Lord to infuse it with His Spirit.

Listen, God has a plan for you. He wants to help you. The Lord wants to be intimately involved in the plans that you make. I think for us as women, and this has certainly been true for me over the years—I like to make my plan and then present it to the Lord. That’s kind of backward. So I’m gonna encourage you to do what God says to do. That’s to lay your plans before Him. So before you write out your schedule, before you do any of that stuff,  come before the Lord and ask Him what He wants you to do. Then when you’re ready for the nitty gritty and you’re ready to flesh it out, check out The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Daylight. You don’t have to be a homeschool mom to appreciate that book. It’s a whole lot of encouragement for you. Real life examples from moms who have lots of little kids at home, to moms who just have one or two, homeschooling moms, moms that work from home, moms who have lots of little kids and high-schoolers. Anyway, I think you guys will be encouraged—so check it out. I will link back to it in the show notes today.

We are on week four of the study at MomStrong International. We’ve been studying all summer the fruit of the Spirit and we’re going to wrap it up appropriately with the fruit of the Spirit that is love.  Next Monday, so the first Monday of every month, we start a brand new study. I want to just encourage you, this is a great time to jump into this study at MomStrong International. We’re going to be talking about what it means to be an ambassador for Jesus— and that’s what we’re supposed to be. The Bible doesn’t give any caveats. God doesn’t give any caveats to our ambassadorship. He doesn’t say— be my ambassador, unless those guys are poking fun at you, then don’t do it. He doesn’t say— be an ambassador for me if you’re feeling up to it. No, your life is speaking for the Lord. One of the main ways that we speak for Him is through the love that we show to other people.

Here at MomStrong International we have spent the last three months pressing deeply into the fruit of the Spirit of God. This singular fruit (love) is like the fleshy pulp of a Rainier cherry or a perfectly ripe peach— or if you’re like me, it’s an avocado. Oh what it would be like if our lives would look more like Jesus.

What would happen if God’s people, who are called by His name, would be the image bearers in every way that God has created us to be…that we would show forth the fruit of the Spirit, which is evidence really, that the Lord is at work in us. As people who love the Lord, and as those of us who greatly desire to love our biological and our spiritual families well—we’ve learned that only by the spirit flourishing in us are we able to have wisdom at all. This is only by God’s working in us, only by his spirit alive in us, can we be who God wants us to be, can speak true kindness, can we be His salt and His light to a world that desperately needs it. We’re going to look at this a little bit because the world has really misunderstood love and we talk about it in shades of gray— and there are no shades of gray around love.

Love is a powerful thing. We can bring our strongest emotions and we can lay them at God’s feet and let Him examine us. Then we step back after He does that and hopefully we’re rejuvenated to a place where we can offer grace to other people because we realize it’s been given to us. In place of ungodly anger, God wants to give us His peace. As these building blocks in our lives are being addressed, biblical integrity comes into view. This is the plumb line that directs us. We are reminded in the Word that it’s not okay to take any sort of sin lightly. Even when we let the small things slip—it erodes at the foundation. Pretty soon we become comfortable with deceit. Pretty soon we become comfortable with the world’s definition of what love is, and the world’s definition of kindness, and the world’s definition of goodness. We don’t want that.

Paul was very clear when he tells the body of Christ in Galatia that they need to be seeing growth from the Holy Spirit who is at work, transforming them. Often we think that these people groups, and churches in biblical times were free of the family drama and the parenting crises and the arguments that we experience. But the truth is— they were just like you and me. They are people regardless of where they lived. Paul summarized his message to the believing gentiles by saying this. Listen to what he said.  Christ set you free for the sake of freedom, to love your neighbor as yourself, not to be saved and yet imprisoned by things God is not requiring. You started well but got distracted. Also, by the way, if you wound each other with your words and actions, watch out, you may be the one consumed. You’ve got freedom in Christ, but until eternity your flesh will battle against the Spirit of God. Let Him reign in you and experience the fullness of His joy. (Galatians 5:1,7,14-15,17)

At this point, Paul sounds like every other mother reading the study— and we’ve had it with the behaviors running a muck in our houses. Paul’s frustrated. He’s going— listen, you’ve been set free, you’ve got freedom in Christ, but you’re always going to be battling with your flesh. Because guess what? We live here, we’re walking on planet earth. As we dig into this topic of love and what it looks like, and what does it mean to love the culture — we keep in front of us what the love that God requires of us and asks for us looks different than the world defines it.

Agapē love, which we’ve talked about before—that’s the love that we have for one another. That’s different than the love that you see in a marriage relationship. Agapē love is unconditional…. well, I should back up. We see agapē love in our marriages, hopefully— because without it that eros love ain’t gonna last that long. When we think about agapē love, we think of it as unconditional. It’s a sacrificial love. It’s a willing choice that we make to love that person in front of us or love that child that’s driving us crazy or love our spouse to the middle of a disagreement. It’s a love that decides to be for the benefit of the one who receives the love rather than the lover is receiving pleasure.

God is not only agapē love, God also shows it and He commands it of believers. Whatever He commands, He also enables. I’m going to say that again. You should write that down. Whatever He commands, He also enables. Our flesh is strong, but the fact that God loves us so powerfully gives us the strength to put down our prideful flesh and instead put His love on. Love for God drives us to fight for kindness, goodness, and all aspects of the Holy Spirit’s fruit. It motivates us to weed out sin and address it, and choose a life of integrity. Love for God spills over into home and work, and is what pushes us to embrace the Spirit’s work in our lives. What a privilege to be loved by a holy, intimate God.

Warren Wiersbe noted “It is possible for the old nature to counterfeit some of the fruit of the Spirit, but the flesh can never produce the fruit of the Spirit. One difference is this: when the Spirit produces fruit, God gets the glory and the Christian is not conscious of his spirituality; but when the flesh is at work, the person is inwardly proud of himself and is pleased when others compliment him. The work of the Spirit is to make us more like Christ for His glory, not for the praise of men.”

This is a really important aspect to why we love people. We love them and why are we obedient? Why do we bring our spirit and our flesh captive to do the will of God? It’s because of a love for God that motivates us. We want to be motivated by that love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 says: Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

This is the Holy Spirit at work in us. Galatians 5:22-23 says the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. We learned in Romans 5:3-6 the apostle Paul says: And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.

It’s a powerful reminder that our love for others should never be motivated by anything else but our love for God. Our love for God should be the motivation. That’s why we speak on behalf of the unborn. That’s why we tell the truth about sexual sin in the culture. That’s why we speak the truth, even if our voice shakes. It’s because of our love for God. Our love for God should train our hearts to love other people. Sometimes that love of other people means we’re going to step out in front of something that could possibly turn out not so good for us. I had a wonderful conversation with several women out Abundant Life in Lee’s Summit when we were there last week for the conference. So many of the questions that I get when I’m signing books or sitting at the table or trying to get a bite of the sandwich at the lunch table, so many of the questions that I get now are coming from moms who are afraid to be loving— because love does not sacrifice truth. Now that doesn’t mean that you’re a jerk about it, but it means that if you can tell that your palms are sweating and your heart’s racing and you know that God’s asking you to speak the truth and to be an ambassador for Him— it might cost you something.

I talked to moms who are afraid of what it’s going to look like to raise their children in a culture that doesn’t understand agapē love, that doesn’t understand God’s approach to this fruit of the Spirit that He calls love. Love tells the truth. Love is patient. Love is willing to walk through deep water with somebody else. This is the same thing that’s true of our children. You can’t force your kids to love God. So how do we train them to love Him and embrace God’s approach? This agapē love. How do we train children to approach life the way God tells them to while we were praying for them to come to know Him?

So the first thing that you do is: model, model, model, model, model it. You can’t give your kids what you don’t have. Be the parents who love Jesus and embrace Him. Don’t be the worn down mom and dad who makes the kids dread adulthood. Show them the beauty of the Gospel and how loved they are. How many things that they can see around them that carry the fingerprints of God. Join Him where He’s working in your family, and you will begin to see fruit in the lives of your kids as you teach biblical principles as best practices—you don’t need to be all churchy—as the Lord gives you opportunity, speak TRUTH to them. Model what it looks like, pray with your kids, pray with them.

So how can you model trust and loving God in prayer? You pray openly, you pray with age appropriate information. Philippians 4:6-7 pray openly about everything. Psalm 34:17-19 model trust in agony. Even when you’re suffering—we want to trust the Lord. In 1 Timothy 1:5 it says, but the goal of our instruction is love from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. So trust the Lord. Three things that make up our motive for everything that we do in parenting is to give them instruction of love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. So the goal is always to teach them to love like Jesus does.

You guys, I’m telling you what, if we can’t do it—they’re going to have a real hard time because the culture wars against the things of the Lord, it really does. If we want our children to walk in right relationship with the Lord, it starts with you. It starts with me. It’s integrity in every situation. It’s situational integrity, and part of that is love. It’s that integrity of Spirit that shows us how to live in right relationship with the Lord. How do we model love when we don’t feel like we’re being loved in return? Ever had a three year old screaming at you? I have. How do we model it? We asked the Lord to help us do it. So far at MomStrong International this summer we have learned about every fruit of the Spirit, every single one of them. You can go back before this study is not available anymore, if you join me at MomStrong International, you can download this study on love. I’m going to start putting screenshots of the study so that you guys can see what it looks like because those of you who haven’t joined us at yet, I’m telling you what—these women are growing and you can download the study and do it with your kids. You can do it as a family. I’m telling you the Word of God will change your life. So I want to just encourage you, join me and become a member.

It is just about $8 a month and it goes a whole long way to supporting this ministry and it helps me continue to keep the writing team writing for you. They’re the ones who helped me get this study out to you every month. If you haven’t checked out Kids Strong, our daughter Savannah writes Kids Strong and that really is aimed at moms who have young children to help you teach your children what you are learning. Because we can’t pass on what we don’t possess. So once we started to learn it, we want to learn how to pass it on. So I’m going to encourage you, if you haven’t done it already, this is a great time. September is a fantastic time to jump into the Word of God. Get up in the morning. You guys, set your alarms, get up before your kids if you can. Open up the Word of God, download this study, fill in the blanks. Get used to inking up your Bible and I promise you—being in the Word of God will change your life. The Holy Spirit does the work. It’s God that changes us and He does it through prayer and through the study of His Word. Try it and see if God won’t change your life in that way also.

Before I go today, I want to let you guys know about some things that are really cool that are happening from our sponsor. I did a really cool podcast recently about sheltering children. A lot of you guys heard it. I heard some great feedback from you. One thing that we don’t want to keep from our children is the power of handling money responsibly. Our podcast sponsor today is Evangelical Christian Credit Union and they have the tools that parents can use to teach financial responsibility to children of any age. So spending accounts, savings accounts, no monthly or overdraft fees. I could go on and on. We’ve got to teach our children to be accountable for their finances and ECCU can help you do just that. You can learn more at eccu.com/heidi. Listen, don’t shield your children from responsibility. They’ll thank you later.

I want to thank you guys also for listening to the podcast today. It really encourages us. if you’ve got a question that you’d like addressed at Mailbox Monday, shoot us an email podcast@thebusymom.com. Any correspondence that you want to send to us, including financial support for this ministry can be sent to me.

Have a great day and I’ll see you back here on Friday for part two of my interview with the amazing Andrew Pudewa.

Hey everybody, this is Heidi St. John. Welcome to the Heidi St, John podcast. Today is Friday, August 23rd. This is episode number 809 coming to you from Kansas City. This is also meet My Friend Friday and here today I’ve got a very special guest on the show with me, author and Speaker Priscilla Shirer is here to talk about her new movie and why discipleship of a new generation is more important than ever.

Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.

Before we get started today, I’ve got a couple of announcements. First of all, thanks for listening to the podcast and for sharing it and leaving reviews over at iTunes. We’re thrilled to see how God is growing the platform. But, more exciting to me is hearing the stories of listeners who are getting off the bench and onto the battlefield and really engaging with the culture around them for the sake of the gospel. I love to hear your stories. You can send them to me podcast@heidistjohn.com. Also coming up, I’m going to be in Lee’s Summit, Missouri—just outside of Kansas City—for the Heidi St. John Conference. This year’s theme is Miracle Worker: The Life Changing Power Of Following Jesus. Tickets are still available at the door. We’re asking that you arrive early to make sure that you get a great spot. We’re going to start at 9:00 AM with worship, and then I’ll be diving right into teaching after that. We cannot wait to see you.

For those of you who aren’t in the Lee’s Summit area, I’ll be in Fredericksburg, Virginia on September 14th and in Vancouver, Washington, my hometown, October 12th. Then on October 19th I’ll be in Lincoln, Nebraska. These are all Heidi St. John Conference dates. We’re in the middle of our study on Integrity at MomStrong International and we’re growing every day. You can download the free Scripture Writing Challenge and sign up to study with us at MomStrongInternational.com.

Without further ado, I’m thrilled today to introduce you to a new friend that I’ve made. I’ve been a fan of Priscilla Shirer for years and what I really appreciate about her is her unwavering commitment to rightly divide God’s Word. She is encouraging tens of thousands of women and men with her speaking. She is a busy mom. She’s a well known Bible teacher and a conference speaker, the founder of Going Beyond Ministries and a New York Times best selling author. Most of you guys are familiar with Priscilla and she’s got a brand new movie coming out: Overcomer. It out in theaters today. You guys, that’s today and it’s being brought to you by the same team that brought us War Room. You guys have been listening to me for a long time. You know how much I loved that movie. I hope you’ll go see it. Priscilla and her husband Jerry live in Dallas, Texas with their three sons. Priscilla, welcome to the show.

[Priscilla] Hi, thanks so much for having me. I’m glad to be here.

[Heidi] So you’re a busy lady. I’ve got a lot of questions for you today. Thanks for taking the time to come on the show with me. I know lots and lots of moms listen to this and they’re all doing what you’re doing—they’re schooling their kids and trying to get it all done. You have three boys, right?

[Priscilla] I sure do.

[Heidi] And how, how old are they?

[Priscilla] They are 16, 15, and 10.

[Heidi] Right on. You’re in the vortex. You got the teenage thing going on.

[Priscilla] Oh yes.

[Heidi] And so you started out as a Bible teacher, right? You went to seminary there in Dallas, is that right?

[Priscilla] Yes, I did.

[Heidi] How did you go from Bible teacher to acting in films? Because I imagine there’s a story.

[Priscilla] Well, it’s a very quick story, to be honest. It’s never anything in my wildest dreams that I would’ve ever considered, or planned for, or strategize for. When I look back on it, most of everything that the Lord has brought to our lives and entrusted to us in ministry, isn’t something that I could have ever imagined. This is no different. One day I got a call from the Kendrick brothers. They called my husband and I remember we were driving down the road. We had him on speaker phone and they said— listen, we are writing a movie on prayer and the main character is Elizabeth Jordan. Every time we’re writing lines for her, we are thinking to ourselves—what would Priscilla say? So we’ve been writing the whole movie that way and it just occurred to us that we should call you and ask you to do it.

When they said that me—my initial response right off the bat was, I said: no, are you kidding me? I’m not an actress. That’s not what I do. I’m in ministry. They said— well, Priscilla, we want you to pray about it. When you read the script, which we’re going to send you, I think you’ll discover it’s not a movie. It is ministry. So now that we’ve seen War Room, people who have seen it might’ve been entertaining as well, but it’s really ministry—and that’s what the Kendrick brothers are doing. They’re just preaching on a big screen and hoping to really affect the hearts of people for the glory of God.

[Heidi] Yeah, well War Room definitely had that effect all around the country. The thing that’s cool to me about your story, and getting into movies, and what the Kendrick brothers are doing is— it kind of shows us that God’s always in the business of reinventing how the gospel gets shared. And it’s a different generation and you guys are reaching a brand new generation of people with the message of the gospel, doing it through movies and through books. Something that I’ve been passionate about here at the podcast for many years is looking at a generation that is desperate. They are desperately in need of Christians who are mature in their faith, who will come alongside and mentor them and disciple them. This is something you guys are really hitting. You’re hitting on this in the movie Overcomer. Why would you say that discipleship and mentoring is more important now than it’s ever been?

[Priscilla] Well, because so much transformation happens one on one and we need community. We need the breadth of the body of Christ in a corporate setting, but also is only so deep you can go in a corporate setting. But when I’m sitting across from you over a cup of coffee and when we’re engaged in each other’s lives and the nuances of each other’s daily lives— well now I get to interact with you, hold you accountable, encourage you when you’re down. There is an insight and reach into your life that cannot happen unless you have someone willing to pour into you and you having a willingness to be vulnerable with someone else.

[Heidi] Yeah, that’s right. What do you say to the person who’s listening to this right now, and they can see discipleship opportunities around them, but they don’t feel equipped. Let’s say they’re just like—well, I don’t know… I haven’t been walking with the Lord my whole life…I’m new in the Lord…I’ve only been walking with the Lord for a couple of years. If a person like that wants to a disciple, somebody else, can they do it?

[Priscilla] Oh, I absolutely think they can because discipleship is not just about a Scriptural knowledge or something. Discipleship is about leading, meaning that your example is still one worth following if you’re honoring God with your actions. It doesn’t mean you have everything together. It doesn’t mean you’re perfect. You can still be working stuff out in your life, and in fact that can be some of the most powerful mentoring when they get to see that you’re not perfect, that you actually are still working through things just like they are — that you need a Savior your just as much as they do.

I love the authenticity that is provided when you have a mentor that says—listen, let me tell you my pitfalls from when I was 20 and 18 and 25 and then 30, the stuff that I did that I shouldn’t have done and I wish I would have known better. I’m willing to show you my scars so that you don’t have to have the same ones.

[Heidi] Yeah, it’s so good. It’s that authenticity. I started blogging maybe 15 years ago, and I was trying to give mom’s encouragement. I was talking about crockpots, things that I was doing in the midst of raising seven children. One day I forgot to plug the crockpot in and I was talking about this great recipe, and my husband was coming home from the church and we were going to have chicken. About three o’clock in the afternoon I was like— why does my house not smell like chicken enchilada? I realized— oh, for goodness sake, I forgot to plug it in. So I hopped onto Facebook and I said: hey you guys, turns out I’m not going to have dinner. What can I do with one can of stewed tomatoes and some olives? And you know what I realized then? People were more encouraged by hearing me say— I failed but I wasn’t going to give up, than they ever would’ve been by me saying—hey, look at my house is perfect, my crockpot dinners turning out. You’re kind of finding the same thing as true. Right?

[Priscilla] Absolutely. People grow by and appreciate the authenticity of people that they’re doing life with. We all have a tendency to see people from afar, listen to their podcast, or watch them on a stage— and we think they’re perfect. Our imagination plays those tricks on us. It makes them think their life is just like that one Instagram picture that we saw them post. So we chalk their whole life up to that experience. When people are willing to say— I actually am a mess and I didn’t turn the crockpot on and I’m sitting here currently…. Priscilla Shirer is sitting here looking at her unmade bed and kind of room is a little bit a tornado and there’s laundry to fold— it’s real life and we’re all living it. We get the opportunity through our issues and our vulnerability to see how we need to all grow together. There’s community and friendship in that.

[Heidi] Yeah, I love it. One of the things I love about your book Radiant, and I’ve had a chance to skim it and I can tell it’s going to be inked up and highlighted all over the place. There’s a section in the book where you start talking about a mistake that you made and you got pulled over and you talk about how we mess up in life. You said sometimes we float into restricted areas. We look up, we veered out of the line and we need a serious course correction. Then you go into talking about coming back to the Lord and how God sees us when we mess up and this idea of turning to the Lord. For listeners who’ve never heard of your new book Radiant, maybe this idea is kind of new to them, this idea of returning. Because really, it’s repeated throughout the Bible—not because God doesn’t like us, but because He loves us and He wants us to come back to Him. So why have you hit so hard and so well on this particular topic in Radiant?

[Priscilla] Yes, I want everyone to know that there is never a time that’s too late for you to make wise choices, for you to line up with the truth of Scripture. In the illustration that you’re referring to, I talked about a day driving down the street where I kind of went into autopilot. You know where you’re driving and maybe you’ve taken a route so many times that you just maybe disengage even though you’re there, you’re aware, but you’re kind of disengaged from the details of it? And I’ve veered over into the HOV-lane, not knowing that I was in the Hov-lane until I was walled in on both sides. I saw a police officer up ahead and I thought—oh, you know that panic you get a panic chest.

[Heidi] Yes! It’s the worst!

[Priscilla]  Yes! So I had to make a split decision. Was I gonna race by and hope he didn’t catch me? No, I decided that’s not good. I know he’s going to catch me. Let me just go ahead and slow down and pull over behind him. And that’s exactly what I did. He came to the window and I told him that I had just kind of veered over, not meaning to, and they kind of smacked me on the back of my hand a little bit, playfully. And he said— well, get out of this lane as soon as you can little woman. So that’s what I did. I exited as soon as I had the opportunity, and I thought— what a great opportunity to demonstrate the grace of God.

When His presence convicts us…. when we’re in the wrong lane: we know we shouldn’t be in this relationship, we know we shouldn’t be having this attitude toward that particular person—don’t try to speed by, don’t try to act like God isn’t there, like He isn’t present, don’t think He’s going to be mad or angry at you. NO, pull over, slow down. He’s going to come and see about you. And yes, he’s going to address it. He’s going to tell you to get out of the lane as soon as you possibly can. But, you have every opportunity to exit at the first sign of a relief to turn around and go back the other way. So I do harp on that because I want people to know there’s always hope.

[Heidi] Yeah. And the other thing that you said that I thought was so good and so healing is—your encouraging readers: don’t stay away and avoid God because you think He’s mad at you or you think He’s just turned His face away because He’s so frustrated. Instead, come back to Him because He loves you. He sees you from a different perspective than you see yourself.

[Priscilla] Absolutely. He sees us through the lens of the blood of His Son, Jesus. He doesn’t see us in our frailty, our humanity, our mistakes— that’s not what He sees, that’s what we see about ourselves. When God looks at us, He sees us through the lens of His Son.

[Heidi] Yeah. Which brings me to another thing I wanted to ask you about. Jay and I have been raising seven children for 28 years. Our youngest is just eight, but the oldest is 28—and the difference that I see in the culture between the way I’m looking at raising my eight year old daughter and the way I raised my 28 year old daughter, is astonishing. What I’ve noticed more than anything else, is we’ve got a generation having an identity crisis. I have not seen it like this ever in my lifetime, and I’ve been walking with the Lord for a long time. It can be intimidating. We are trying to figure out how we address this idea of identity crisis in the culture. And you’ve really been doing that. You’re doing this in your book Radiant, and I’m assuming this is a big theme of the movie Overcomer. Tell me a little bit about how you’re tackling the issue of identity and the crisis we’re facing in the culture right now.

[Priscilla] Absolutely. That’s the theme of the entire movie. The whole point of it is to say that your identity cannot be wrapped up in temporal things. So if it’s in success, well success can be looming in your life in one decade and then be gone in the next decade. If your significance was tied to that, or money, or the applause, or appreciation of people, or if you’re all wrapped up in that—and it’s nothing wrong with any of those things—but if your significance is tied to them, that means that when somebody takes them away or when they disappear, your health, when it disappears that means you are going to be devastated. Often, the only way we realize that our significance is illegitimately tied to things is when it’s taken away. Because you can tell. If you’re only disappointed, that’s one thing. But if you’re devastated and you feel like life is over because that thing, that relationship doesn’t exist anymore— that means that your significance was too tightly wound up in that thing.

You’ve got to go back and tie your significance to who God says you are. Think about the way that would change your whole life. If you really believe that you are chosen and accepted, let’s say you really believe that…that means that throughout my day when I’m going to make a decision as to how to respond to somebody, whether or not I’m going to tweet that, whether or not I’m going to accept that invitation or not. If I believe I’m accepted, then that means I’m not going to make decisions based out of insecurity… that I want you to accept me so I’m going to say yes to something I don’t really what to do… or I’m going to tweet something that actually reeks within security, or I’m going to engage in something that actually is a lesser version of what what I’m really worth. So when we get people really believing what God says about them, it literally changes the choices that you’re making on a daily basis, which in essence ultimately changes the course of your life.

[Heidi] Yeah. And for the person who’s listening to this right now, and they’re thinking—you know what, I don’t even know who I am in Christ anymore because I’ve been defined by how many followers I have on Instagram, or how many people appreciate the job that I’ve taken at the church all these many years, or whatever it is…it can be anything…and they’re struggling to find identity. Can you help point that person back to where do we begin to find our identity? Not In ourselves, but in the one who made us.

[Priscilla] Yes. In the film, Olivia Brooks, who is my character, looks at a young woman and says— I want you to do me a favor. I want you to turn to the New Testament, Ephesians one and two. I want you to just read it, write down everything it says about who you are. That is where I would begin. I would tell someone to just read through. You don’t have to read both chapters in one day if you don’t want. They’re not particularly long, but you can take over the course of a week. Just take the first two chapters of Ephesians and make a list of what it says about you as an adopted daughter or son in the Kingdom of God. Then rehearse those things. Post them on your bathroom mirror, or put them on your nightstand, or in your car where you’ll see them regularly—and then remind yourself continuously about what it says about you. It’ll start to renew your mind.

Even in the movie, there’s one scene where she’s reading through her list one day and she realizes it says: I am forgiven. And that little thing just keeps messing with her. It keeps bothering her, and as she meditates on it, she realizes— well, if I’m forgiven, then what business do I have harboring resentment and bitterness against a very important person in her life that really had legitimately offended her. She thought: man, I need to go forgive them right away. So it literally changed her choices. It changed the path she walked down when she recognized the state of being that she was in as a daughter of God.

[Heidi] Hmm. It’s such a powerful truth that this generation needs so desperately to grasp because we are looking for our identity. We’re looking for identity and all the wrong places. One of the things I loved about the book is you frequently do something in the book over and over: read this, say this, and believe this. I printed out one that I thought— man, this is great! I’m gonna take my little black and white copy and stick it on my bathroom mirror. You started in Colossians 3:9-10  you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its Creator. Then you say this: my struggles do not define me just because I’ve done something or doesn’t mean that’s who I am. My identity is rooted in my new nature in Christ.

When you you’re talking to, especially to young girls who their identity is being assaulted at every turn right now— even the idea that God created us male and female is under attack in the culture..

[Priscilla]  Oh, all of it. Totally.

[Heidi] When you see a young person struggling with this, where do you…. I mean, we’re going to send them back to the Word… I love that you’re saying— hey, my struggles don’t define me. This the scientist you said— oh no, male and female. No, I run back to the Word of God. God said, I made you in my image. We’re image bearers. How does the fact that that we are image bearers, once we get that deep down, how can that impact the way we live our lives?

[Priscilla] Well, what it means is that every part of you was designed to literally bear His image. It’s like a mirror. A mirror is not designed to be impressed with itself. It’s designed to reflect an image. So what that means is: when I see myself now, with all of my uniquenesses, that means that He intentionally gave me those because there is some unique way He’s going to be reflected to the world if I’ll just relax and be myself. That means my hair texture is supposed to be my hair texture, that my skin color is supposed to be my skin color. My nose is supposed to be the size it is. All the stuff we wish we could change about our bodies—even the weaknesses in my personality, even those — that means that they’re not liabilities. It means God meant for me to be wired this way. If I dull my uniqueness, if I try to kind of melt into sameness with everybody around me, then the world is gonna miss out on the reflection of God that was intended to be seen through the uniqueness of me. His creative genius intended Priscilla to be this way and for you to be the way you are. As we surrender the fullness of our uniqueness to Him, we become a brilliant reflection of His light and love to the world.

[Heidi] Wow. And that is the message that we need to be shouting from the rooftops right now. It’s a powerful truth to realize that really, our identity is found in Christ. He tells us that He loves us just the way we are. We’re always telling our kids— listen, God made you special and He loves you very much. It seems to me, in the culture, we’re working really hard to try to undo what God said— He made us just the way we are. I love this. Can you give listeners a little bit of taste for what the movie Overcomer is all about?

[Priscilla] Absolutely. It is about identity and it wraps itself around the story of a young woman and also a coach at a high school. The two of them and then one other person, their stories become very much intertwined as they all struggle in different ways to discover their significance and value— and to be reminded that it cannot be rooted in things that are stripped away. It’s an emotional story. It’s a gripping story. It’s got lots of twists and turns. I really think that folks are going to enjoy it when they see it in the theaters the weekend of August 23rd.

[Heidi] So that’s today. So this is opening in theaters today all over the country. If a mom is sitting here listening to this right now and she’s wondering— should I take my 13 year old too?

[Priscilla] Oh yes you should, absolutely. It is for the whole family. I really mean that because you literally have the entire spectrum of people in demographics in this film. You’ve got teenagers, you’ve got younger brothers and sisters, you’ve got husbands, wives. I even appreciate the diversity in the film that we see ourselves represented in the film, even across the spectrum of racial unity. I appreciate that aspect as well. So I think anyone coming from any vantage point or any perspective, we’ll be able to identify and connect on some level with some portion of this film.

[Heidi] And would you say that once we can, once we start to realize…. because it’s not just teenagers that struggle with identity, right? I mean, a mom can struggle with our identity, our identity can be wrapped up in motherhood. And then your teenager says— I hate your sweater and you’re a terrible mother. All of a sudden— we don’t know who we are anymore. So this is an issue that really affects everybody.

[Priscilla] It sure does. And you see the adults in the film struggling with it as well.

[Heidi] I love it. You also have a companion book, which is kind of what I’ve been reading out of a little bit this morning. Tell us a little bit about Radiant, why you wrote it…. and how in the world, Priscilla, how in the world are you writing a book and doing a movie and raising kids at the same time? Because whatever vitamin you’re taking, girl, I want it.

[Priscilla] No, no. Let’s be clear. We filmed this movie a year ago. That’s how long it takes for a movie to get to the theaters. So last year this time we were filming and I only took about two or three weeks to fill my part. They film through the duration of the summer. Then I spent this year, from the fall until about May or June or so, writing this book. So I get the privilege to do that from my home. So I’m with my kids throughout the day. I just write when they’re away at school and doing their activities and here with them, but it was a privilege to write this book because what it does is it gives a woman an opportunity to have the message in her hand so that if she wants to, after a two hour movie, do business with this. She’s grappling with it, trying to figure it out and maybe trying to discover maybe she doesn’t even own a Bible. She needs something to help her to discover and grapple with the nuances of the struggles of her identity. This book and the accompanying Bible Study and resources that the Kendrick brothers have made sure are tied to this film—it’s just a great way for us to steward the message into people’s lives and homes and hearts.

[Heidi] I love it. That really is the message—to help parents and teenagers and whatever stage you are in your life, to get off the bench and onto the battlefield… to realize that you are who God says you are.

[Priscilla] Absolutely.

[Heidi] You’re not defined by anybody else. You’re defined by the Lord. Priscilla Shirer, you are a treasure. Thank you so much for coming on the show. Where can people find you if they want to find more information about the movie and the book, where’s the best place to send them?

[Priscilla] Sure. Well we’re our ministry is Going Beyond Ministries so you can always find me GoingBeyond.com or @PriscillaShirer on social media platforms.

Gentleness | MomStrong International Week 3 of 4 —808

Over the last two weeks we looked at the integrity of God. God is unchanging, and that reality is a sure and steady anchor for our souls. But not only does this truth speaks to our hearts, it informs our lives as well. This week, we’ll be talking about the pursuit of gentleness and how it honors God.

Hey friends, this is Heidi St. John. Welcome to the show. I’m so glad you guys have joined me today. It’s Wednesday, August 21st this is episode number 808. It’s week three of the MomStrong International Bible study. Today we’re going to focus on the character trait of gentleness— which is a fruit of the Spirit.

Stick around. I think you’re going to be encouraged

Thanks for listening today everybody. This is a busy, busy week for me. As I said to you guys on Monday, a lot’s going on. My house is getting repiped today. Moment of silence—that’s gonna take a week. I’m going out of town tomorrow heading to Kansas City so I can get ready to minister to the women there. We have been planning this for over a year and we are going to be doing some wonderful, wonderful things in Kansas City. I’m so excited about what God is doing. I am thrilled to be a part of the ministry of Abundant Life Church, which has been under the leadership of Pastor Phil Hopper, who has become a friend of mine.

Wow, you guys. God’s doing amazing things in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. So come out and say hello, bring your friends, bring your grandma, bring your mom, bring your daughter. We’re going to have a great time. My family’s coming out and we make sort of a family worship team all together. So my son Spencer is on drums, my son in law Ryan is going to be playing electric guitar and trading off acoustic with my husband, Sierra and Savannah both sing and play instruments. I think you guys are going to be really encouraged. So come on out. I will see you guys this Saturday and we still have room for tickets at the door. If you go to HeidiStJohn.com/events, you can still order your lunch ahead of time. So anyway, we’re super excited about that. I’ll see you there this weekend. And then shortly after that on the 29th, I will be at Valley Baptist church in Bakersfield. Really excited about that.

We have so many really wonderful things going on and we’re just thrilled that you guys are coming along with us for the ride. For those of you who live in the Portland, Vancouver area, classes are going to start at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center. Tons of amazing stuff going on there. You can check that out https://www.fphrc.org/. Next month in September, I’m going to be doing my Faith That Speaks conference is going to be in Virginia and then after that I will be coming and bringing my conference right here to my neck of the woods on October 11th and 12th in Vancouver at Firmly Planted and you guys coming out for that, there’s still an early bird rate window open for that right now, so check it out.

All right, I want to dig right into the Bible study for today. I’m real excited. For those of you who have been studying with us at MomStrong International , you know we started this with the hope that you would want to dig into God’s Word. One of the things that has been on my heart lately is just our need to be in the Word, but also how women’s Bible Study groups have really become known for gossip and reading books that really aren’t bringing us to Scripture. I want to bring you to Scripture.

So this month we’re talking about the fruit of the Spirit. We’ve actually been doing that all summer. If you’re not part of the ministry at MomStrong international, I want to just encourage you to do that. You can also pick up my book Becoming MomStrong. There’s a whole series of books now out around that and I’m working on a new one MomStrong 365, which by the grace of God will be out sometime next year. So pray for me. I’m in the middle of writing that right now.

As we look at our passage this month, and as we sort of bring it to an end, we’re going to end up for the next two weeks, we’re going to be studying about goodness. We’ve talked about integrity and kindness. And this week we’re talking about goodness and we’re gonna be talking about faithfulness. And then for the month of September we’re going to move into a new study called Ambassador. And there’s never been a better time for you and me to be an Ambassador of the Lord Jesus. So check it out at MomStrong International .com. You can download the free Scripture Writing Challenge, and for about $8 and some change every month you can join us for the Bible study. I promise you will not be sorry that you did. It’s also a really great way for you to support the ministry.

2 Thessalonians 1:11-12 says To this end also we pray for you always, that our God will count you worthy of your calling, and fulfill every desire for goodness and the work of faith with power, so that the name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I think this is so beautiful how he says to fulfill every desire for goodness. And as we talk a little bit about goodness, because it’s really been maligned in the culture, you know—don’t be a goody two shoes. Don’t tell me what to do. As we talk a little about goodness, we’re going to be really seeking the Lord and the Holy Spirit to help us become men and women who are known for our goodness, which comes from the Lord. It’s a fruit of the Spirit. Ephesians 2:10 says For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. If you’ve ever felt hesitant about doing something and voiced your doubts to mischievous companions, this response is probably what I just said a few minutes ago— Don’t be a goodie two shoes. No one cares. What’s your problem? It’s fascinating that our flesh rises up so much against the pursuit of righteousness. Why, when righteousness brings with it the fullest benefits of becoming more like Jesus, do we fight it in order to choose something lesser? It’s a good question. Instant gratification and immediate pleasure are wells that promise satisfaction but deliver gritty sand to our thirsty souls, and this is the trap of the enemy. We fall into it all the time.

Instant gratification. It’s why people can sell books like your best life now and have a new kid by Friday because we don’t want to do the work to get there. We want that instant gratification. That’s what our flesh wants, and righteousness that’s fleshed out in our lives instead brings rich satisfaction and deep contentment. That’s the contentment that is with us, even when we’re struggling in other areas of our lives. The Holy Spirit working goodness in us, producing goodness through us…it’s hard to believe He would be so gracious to do such things. But for His glory, He does. Remember we’ve been saying this at the podcast all the time— that the Lord of Heaven’s armies, the God of the universe, the One who created and loves you, is resolutely committed to His own glory. For His glory, He does work in us and through us.  Before the dawn of time He preordained good works for us to walk in—the choice is ours whether we engage in those opportunities or we let them pass us by.

This is why I’m always telling you guys— get off the bench. God didn’t put you here for nothing. He wants you to do something, for you are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God’s already prepared for you beforehand. That’s why I love having people on the show like Stephanie Carlson, and Dr. Duke Pesta, and my friend Bill Jack—because these guys have gotten off the bench and they’ve said: Lord, use me. It doesn’t mean that life is always going to be easy. No, it means that God has something for you to do and He’s going to help you to do it even when life is difficult, even when you’re struggling.

Think about this for a minute: What good works could be so important that God actually prepared them beforehand? Choices and actions that will glorify Him and bless those around us—is really the answer, right? And so I want you to think about this with me for just a minute there. Once a little girl was in a home where the inhabitants were in the midst of great turmoil; a time of betrayal, anger, and grief. She was unaware of the situation, but remarked as she went outside that it was a dark place. The world, without the goodness of Jesus, is a dark place. God preordained good works in order for the world to see His glory and find eternal truth, and He loves us so much that He allows us to have a role in His glorious creation! Every single one of us has a deep desire for our kids to grow up and be good people. The apostle Paul said, “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth” (3 John 1:4). Neither we nor our children can walk in truth without being taught and trained in it.

This is why MomStrong International is so important. This is why focusing on training our children in righteousness is a big deal. We’ve got to train our children up in the truth, to bring them up in it and train them in it. We can’t pass on what we don’t possess. Think about this for just a little bit….if nothing in the world is truly capable of being good due to sin tainting it all, then the only goodness that  can exist is that which is born of God. The Gospels record Jesus teaching, “The fool has said in his heart, ‘There is no God,’ they are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice; there is no one who does good” (Mark 10:18; Psalm 53:1).

How can we walk in good works preordained by God for us? Well, here’s how you do it: By embracing salvation and inviting the Holy Spirit to bring His FULL STRENGTH to growing His fruit in our lives!

We talked on Monday a little bit about what happened with Josh Harrison, whether or not we could lose our salvation—can a believer lose his belief? It goes back to inviting the Holy Spirit to come into our lives and to walk in His strength, to walk in His power, not in our own. This has to do with the outworking of our faith. That has to do with whether or not we can be good at, has to do with whether or not we can be kind like we talked about last week. And as we pull it all together, we come back to the topic of integrity and integrity is heavily impacted by goodness.

We see this all throughout. Don’t believe me? Go to Washington DC. Don’t believe me? Look and see what’s happening on the news right now. My goodness. People committing suicide in prisons when they’re supposed to be people who are supposed to be watching them. There’s some crazy stuff going on in the world right now that involves integrity. When we are not people of integrity, we are also not going to be people who have any good in us and when we invite the Holy Spirit to produce His goodness in us, it’s going to require that we remove ugliness to make room for it. It’s going to require that we practice self control by choosing selfless responses to those around us.  It will require practicing self-control by choosing selfless responses to those around us. It requires getting our heads up out of the weeds of parenting to see wildflowers along the road—and stop to pick them. Pursuing goodness involves joy and some dreaming; remembering sweetness and innocence and bringing those things to the table of our parenting and marriages so we can all be blessed and changed.

As you guys download this study this month, I hope that you’re blessed and encouraged because we don’t often talk about goodness in the culture. I’m going to spend a little bit of time for the next few minutes in 1 Samuel because parenting with goodness in mind requires that we lean into the Lord. So how do we train goodness in our precious children? Well, here’s how we do it, mom, grandma, dad —listened to this: model it, model it, model it. We can’t pass on what we don’t possess. The pursuit of righteousness, holiness, and goodness is a privilege and opportunity. When we moan about it in front of our kids, they will happily jump on the bandwagon. Shoring this up in their younger years will brace them for the onslaught of self-centeredness that the world tempts them with as they grow older.

It’s important that you train your children in righteousness and that you model the fruit of the Spirit for them. Talk about the fruit of the Spirit with your kids. Jay and I wrote a Family Bible Study called Firmly Planted. If you guys are looking for something to do with your older children at well with younger ones too —I wanted to just encourage you, check it out. The reason we did that several years ago is because we’ve noticed that parents are no longer in the Word at their kids. We take them to church, we drop them off at their Sunday school group, and we go to our church and then we meet up for lunch and we go home. We go on our separate ways and we have forgotten what it means to walk along the road with our kids when we stand up and when we sit down— to talk about the things that the lord and to model it for our kids. So let’s look for just a minute at 1 Samuel 12.Samuel has important things to declare to the Israelites. I’m going to read this for you and I want you to check it out.

1 Samuel 12:3 Here I stand. Testify against me in the presence of the Lord and his anointed. Whose ox have I taken? Whose donkey have I taken? Whom have I cheated? Whom have I oppressed? From whose hand have I accepted a bribe to make me shut my eyes? If I have done any of these things, I will make it right.”

1 Samuel  12:14-15 If you fear the Lord and serve and obey him and do not rebel against his commands, and if both you and the king who reigns over you follow the Lord your God—good! But if you do not obey the Lord, and if you rebel against his commands, his hand will be against you, as it was against your ancestors.

1 Samuel 12:24-25 But be sure to fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you. Yet if you persist in doing evil, both you and your king will perish.”

That’s hardcore. This is what he’s declaring to the Israelites. Why is he saying that he has earned the right to speak in their lives? He is saying that his conscience is at rest. When we have the legacy of a clear conscience, we have the wisdom of years to speak into our children’s lives. That’s really what he was doing, right? He was saying: here I stand, testify against me in the presence of the Lord whose ox have I taken, whose donkey have I taken, who have I cheated, who have I oppressed? If you are walking, parents, in right relationship with the Lord— then when it’s time to speak truth to the lives of your children and your conscience is at rest. Your kids will not be able to find fault in your testimony to them. Not that you’re without sin, but that we are constantly trying to be men and women of integrity.

I had the privilege not too long ago to speak before a political organization and my talk was on integrity. I was saying— listen, if you can’t be the men and women that you declare to be when you’re up here on the platform, get out of politics because we don’t need men and women who don’t have integrity in politics. That’s what I’m always telling Christians. Walk with the Lord and then run for office. Get on your school boards. Be men and women of integrity. Demonstrate the fruit of the Spirit. This is so important because when we do this, God can use our lives. The legacy that God wants to give us is built one decision at a time. When you read Samuels message to the Israelites and how he’s able to give his message, it was because of the testimony of his life. How would he be a good role model if he didn’t have a life of integrity to back it up? How are we going to be good parents to our kids? We need to live a life that’s worthy of the Gospel. What a goal to be able to say as Samuel did: who have I defrauded, who have I oppressed? No one.

Now, if you’d like a role model of dishonesty and God’s handling of that, read Acts 5. I’ll just let you do that on your own. Acts 5:1-10. So if you’re ready for plenty of questions, and then you want to dig into it more, study it with your kids. The goal here is not to instill fear,  but reverential fear and respect of how important truth is. You guys, it’s never been more important than it is right now. Our kids need to see us living lives of integrity. The Bible says that God blesses it. Over the last two weeks, we have looked into the integrity of God and we know that God is unchanging and that reality is a shore and study anchor, the Bible says, for our souls. But not only does God speak His truth to our hearts, He informs our lives as well. God’s always consistent. There is never any hypocrisy or fickleness in Him. God’s not going to change. His character isn’t going to change based on what a group of people does or who He’s with or the situation that He’s in. We are called as God’s people to reflect this consistency of character and integrity.

The first definition of integrity is a soundness of and adherence to moral principle and character; uprightness; honesty. The second is a state of being whole. This is when we say integrity—when we talk about integrity, we talk about the whole person. A person of integrity is not going to be one way at the office and another way in front of his wife. He’s going to be who he says he is no matter what situation he is in, and this is a life that God blesses.

Our integrity is the evidence that we know God and that His Spirit is working inside of us. When we come to Christ He begins to give us new desires and affections. We want to be integral because we want to reflect who God is to the culture around us. Scripture often uses the analogy of a fruit tree to talk about Christian character. The fruit doesn’t give the tree life, the root system does that. But the fruit is evidence that the tree has life. Healthy roots ensure healthy fruit. In the same way, our obedience is driven by grace—we long to please God because He’s already pleased with us in Christ.  We begin to live lives of integrity.

We’re going to study this a whole lot more at MomStrong International. We’re going to be in the book of James in the book of First John, we’re gonna study in Ephesians and 2 Corinthians. I’m going to encourage you to open up your bibles and to be the men and women that God has called you to be through this study of His Word. These are amazing times. These are absolutely amazing times to be a Christian, to be the men and women that God has created us to be. I hope that you’re encouraged as God is speaking to you through this study of His Word. That’s what God wants to do.

I want to end today doing something that I haven’t done for a while. There was a question that I got recently from a mom who said that she is curious if I ever talked to my kids about Ecclesiastical things. In other words about the second coming of the Lord, about the rapture. I have a saying in our home called rapture ready. In fact, I was telling my husband, I want to make tee shirts that say: live like you’re leaving. In fact, I think I might do that. So those might show up at the next Faith That Speaks Conference.

I love this idea of living like we’re leaving. That’s part of the reason why we study God’s Word. Matthew 24:44 says So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him. My grandmother was a Bible teacher. She loved the Word of God. And as I’ve been writing the new book that I’m working on, this has been coming to my mind quite a bit. She lived like she was leaving. She lived like the Lord is coming back. That was evidenced in the fruit of the Spirit in her life and in the goodness of her life. God wants that to be evidenced in our lives as well.

I hope you guys enjoyed this study this week at MomStrong International. This is a great time to become a leader. Did you know that you guys are gonna become a leader and you can start a chapter of MomStrong International in your home or in your city or in your church? We would love to see you do that. What would happen, men and women, if we began to study to show ourselves approved workman who do not need to be ashamed, but who rightly divide the Word of truth? I think we can find out as we study God’s Word and apply it to our everyday lives. Thanks for listening to the podcast today. I really appreciate it. Please be sure to leave reviews for the podcast over at iTunes. Tell your friends about it. We’re so excited to see you this weekend in Kansas City. I love you guys. Stay faithful and I’ll see you back here with Priscilla Shire on Friday.

Can A Believer Lose Salvation? | MailBox Monday — 807

Many in the church have been hurt and confused in recent weeks as a prominent pastor and leader in the homeschool community renounced his faith in Jesus Christ. It begs the question: “Can a person who has professed faith in Jesus lose His salvation?” Simply? The answer is “no.” Listen is as I answer this question and more today on Mailbox Monday.

This podcast is brought to you by our friends at  Bible Quest Classical

Hey everybody, welcome to the show. Thanks for joining me today. My name is Heidi St. John and you have found me at my little corner of the Internet. Today is Monday the 19th of August. It’s Mailbox Monday and we’re going to answer your questions.

Stick around. I think you’re going to be encouraged.

All right, so before we get started today, wanted to let you guys know I am doing a live webinar today at 11:00 AM. Now I realize some of you are going to be hearing this after the fact, but I’m going to leave the link for it in the show notes today and I think you can still get access to it, so check it out at the show notes at HeidiStJohn.com/podcast.

If you’re listening to this before 11:00 AM PST, I’ll link to it obviously in the show notes today, but come and join me. I’m going to be doing homeschooling for rookies, so if you know anyone who needs encouragement and can use some direction in their homeschooling, a little bit of nuts and bolts, we’re going to talk about really the heartbeat behind homeschooling and why our family chose it and why I think it’s good for you. So check it out today at 11:00 AM Pacific Time.

All right, today is mailbox Monday— woot woot! I love hearing from you guys. Thank you so much for writing in and thank you. Thank you. Thank you for leaving reviews for the podcast over at iTunes. I got another favor to ask of you today. If you have never left a review for Becoming MomStrong, which is the book I put out in 2017 boy— I would love it if you would do that either at at Amazon or at Barnes and Noble or Books-A-Million, wherever books are sold. I’d love it if you could leave reviews for those books. It really helps us to get them in the hands of other people and we’d love to see those reviews grow. So anytime you guys can take about two or three minutes out of your day and just leave those reviews, whether it’s for the podcast or for the books I’ve written or whatever, it really does encourage us and it helps us to get the books into the hands of people who need them.

All right. Today is Mailbox Monday and I want to thank you guys for sending questions and to me, this is one of my favorite things to do here at the podcast—sort of go through your questions and hopefully give you answers from a biblical worldview, but more importantly than anything else that we do at the podcast, it really is to point you to Jesus. We’re going to do that today. We’re going to talk about a couple of difficult things and as we do it, I think it’s appropriate to come before the Lord in prayer.

Father, I thank you that Your Word has the answers to the questions that this generation is asking. Lord, thank you that there’s nothing that’s happening outside in culture right now that’s outside of Your ability to intervene and ability to heal. Lord, I thank you that Your Word says that if we need wisdom, we can ask it from you and so are we need wisdom right now. We’re going to be talking about some things that are difficult. We’re going to be grappling with some of life’s more difficult questions. Would You just illuminate Your Word for us? Would you give me the strength, Lord, and the wisdom to encourage those who are listening today and encouraged me to buy the power of Your Spirit? Lord, I love You and I thank You for intervening in our lives on a daily basis in Jesus name. Amen.

Speaking of intervening, I know that a lot of you guys follow me online and I wanted to say thank you for praying for me. A couple of weeks ago I threw my back out and when I say threw it out, all I really did was bend down and pick a pencil and it just tweaked it out. I could not walk. I’m talking crawling like from my bed to the bathroom for like two or three days straight. I wasn’t even sure I could podcast. And by the end of last week I was able to get back into the studio again. So thank you. Thank you for praying for me, for everybody who sent me all your good ideas. I am doing a lot better. I really would appreciate your prayers. We’re going to be in Kansas City as you guys know, for my women’s event coming up really soon. And we really would love your prayers just for that. That’s actually the end of this week. This is a great week at the podcast I’ll be doing at Mailbox Money obviously today. And then on the 21st we’re going to be diving into the week three study for MomStrong International. And then on Friday Priscilla Shirer is coming on the podcast with me and you guys are not gonna want to miss that. And then the 24th I’ll be speaking at Abundant Life in Kansas city. So really big week for me. Also the repipe of my house is happening. Boy you guys, I don’t normally ask for prayer for myself, but I would really appreciate it. We’ve had a lot of water issues at our home and so our entire house is having to be repiped. It’s frustrating for me. I don’t really love the idea of people coming in and just cutting holes in all of my walls and taking all the pipes out and replacing them. And yet, that is where I am. So if you guys could pray for us, I’d really appreciate that. We leave for Kansas City on Thursday, the 22nd in the morning and then we’ll be there all day Friday setting up and just boom. I can not wait to come out of the gate on the 24th at Abundant Life. So check it out at HeidiStJohn.com/events and we would really appreciate your prayers for us in the meantime.

All right, I’m going to jump right into your questions today because it is mailbox Monday. This one comes in from a mom who did not give me her name and she says: Heidi, we have five children ranging in age from five to 17. The youngest is autistic. I was able to homeschool our three girls for one and a half years, and then two of them wanted to go back to regular school. Now one of my girls wants to come back to homeschool and my husband says— no way. Is there help for me when I want to homeschool her again and my husband is not on board? Thank you for your support and all you do for families.

All right, so a couple of things right off the top of my head. First of all, when people come to me and they say— my husband’s not on the same page. Or a husband will say to me— why am I just no way does she want to do this? You guys, we should care more about our marriages. I would never say to somebody—oh yeah, totally, your husband’s not on board? Yeah, make him really angry and just do this. Even though you know it’s going to bum them out. I will always turn your attention back to the Word of God. The Bible teaches us that if we lack wisdom, we can ask for it. The Bible teaches us to take our questions to the Lord in prayer. You want to pray for your husband, pray for him that  that the Lord will open his eyes and then love him like crazy. This is not something for you to be fighting about with him. I think it’s worth talking to your husband about the way that your kids seem to be manipulating you. I think that might be a bigger issue.

I’ve told this story a whole bunch of times and I only have about 30 seconds to do it justice, but a long time ago when our oldest daughter was getting ready to go to high school, I had told her when she was in seventh grade that if she wanted to go to public school when she got into high school, I would let her make that choice. Well that was a bad thing for me to do because she wasn’t equipped emotionally or spiritually and she hadn’t been given the authority to make that kind of a decision. But I was being a chicken and I didn’t want to bum her out. I didn’t want to tell her what I knew that God wanted us to do, which was to homeschooler. I thought, well, if I give it a couple years, she’ll change her mind. Well, she didn’t. When the time came and she was like— but mom, you said I could go to school. I had to go back to her and so did my husband. We went to her and we said— we are so sorry. We gave this decision to you because we were too cowardly to tell you that the answer was no. We know that God doesn’t want us to put you in school. This was the beginning of a new conversation with our daughter where we asked her questions like— why don’t you want to homeschool? How can we make it better? It was the beginning of a turning point in our relationship with her that turned out to be very, very good. So that part I think is very important for you—to talk to your husband about what it is that you want for your kids and if you are going to homeschool them, homeschool them. These are not decisions for your kids to make. Can they have input? Absolutely. But you are the parents and we live in a very child centered society here in Western culture. I just want to encourage you to get back in the driver’s seat and drive the parent car—because you are the mom. I’m not gonna encourage you to argue and fight with your husband and I’m certainly not going to encourage you to go behind his back or just defy his wishes and homeschool them no matter what—because that’s going to cause strife in your home and strife in your marriage. My goodness, that’s not worth it. So, take it to the Lord in prayer. Talk to your husband about the direction of your family, talk to your kids about what their responsibility is and what your responsibility is. Then I would say pray together as a family.

Next question comes from a mom who says: Dear Heidi, I would like to know about having kids in church. Our church does not encourage kids to be in the service. As soon as we get to the service, our kids are taken down to kids church and that is where they stay for the next two hours. We have been longing for something different and feel discouraged and separated from our kids at every front. Please give me your advice. Alright, sweet mama. Here’s the thing. This is also a phenomenon of the Western church where we have decided that kids are not capable of sitting in Church with their parents. And I disagree. I think nurseries are great. I think having children’s church for little kids— one, two, three, four, maybe five. But certainly when your kids are six years old, they can sit in church with you. My grandma used to bring coloring books for us. She would bring crayons and things that we could hold in our lap, quiet things that we could do. She never required us to be taking notes at six years old and looking terribly interested. She wanted us to be with her. At the time I didn’t understand it and now I do— because I learned so much just by listening when I was in church as a little child, even though I was coloring my Mickey Mouse coloring book or whatever it is the grandma brought for us to do. She made sure that we were quiet, but she also made sure that we knew that we were loved and wanted in church.

I think churches have made a grave mistake. By separating kids from their parents on the basis of age and what we consider to be maturity level. We send the kids too to their “age appropriate class” and the parents go to theirs. Yes, there’s a time and a place to separate parents and children and I’m not down on necessarily on Sunday school classes. I do not like this habit that we have gotten into as a church of saying that kids do not belong in church with their parents, or they’re too immature, they just can’t handle it. I don’t think that’s true. I think that our kids can handle a whole lot more than we give them credit for. My encouragement to you is just let your kids sit in church. Even if you’ve got a Sunday school in church, it doesn’t mean your kids need to go.

You can make it a joyful thing that your kids look forward to and they’re sitting with you in church and this is what we do as a family— think that’s a good idea. This is not necessarily a sin issue, but just sort of a personal preference in my opinion on the matter— so, do with it what you will.

Our podcast is brought to you by Bible Quest Classical Bible Curriculum. If you’ve ever had a child asked for the same story over and over again, you’re not alone. It’s because children at a young age actually find memorization fun. Clearly this is the ideal time frame for a focus on memorization of biblical facts and direct Scripture, and that’s why I’m excited about one of our new sponsors here at the podcast: Bible Quest Classical Bible Curriculum. Bible Quest equips parents to teach God’s Word using the classical model of education. Homeschool kids focus on either the old or the New Testament and they contain three phases: The Equip Phase focuses on memorizing Scripture and Biblical information. Weekly lessons, a timeline poster, a song CD, and deck of review cards with 40 weeks of material to Equip youngsters with Biblical Knowledge. This information makes up the basic building blocks for the next phase, which is the Empower Phase. The Empower Phase activities to help build Biblical understanding and aptitude in studying God’s Word. Biblical discussion and practiced use of Biblical information can help to leverage this natural focus of older students to produce understanding. The Expedition Phase projects help parents and caring mentors lead students to develop godly wisdom. This is the ideal time to help late, middle, and high school students work through the application and presentation of God’s Word to others. The first 100 listeners that go to BibleQuestClassical.com/heidi will receive free shipping on their order within the United States.

Next question comes from a mom, and I’m getting a lot of these, so I’m going to camp out on this for just a minute. It comes from a mom who was asking about the Josh Harris situation and she says: Dear Heidi, I am discouraged. I’m discouraged by the way that we idolize Christian leaders. I’m discouraged by the way that we idolize the culture and I’m worried about my children staying grounded in their faith. How can I stay grounded in my faith in light of what’s happening with Christian leaders all around us?

All right, this is a wonderful question and on the 6th of August I posted about this situation. Like many of you, my heart is terribly grieved by the recent news of Josh Harris and his so called deconstruction, a departure from his faith in Jesus. This is a sobering time for Christians. We are being attacked on every front as Jesus said we would be, and the pressure to conform or turn away from our faith entirely will be and is enormous. Al Mohler wrote a very thoughtful piece which I would encourage you to read, I’ll link back to it in the show notes today, but the bottom line is that Christians must know the Word of God. If we’re going to be able to sustain a biblical ethic and grow in our faith amidst a whirlwind of apostasy and pressure from the world to do otherwise. We need to study and know the Bible. There is no substitute. Only in studying the Bible can we learn how to love others and follow Jesus. We have lived too long as lazy in both our study and our application of the gospel. This is just a quote from that was what Al Mohler wrote. He wrote the headlines Concerning Joshua Harris:

Indeed concerning both Joshua and Shannon Harris are deeply humbling to American evangelicalism. They should be very sobering. They should make us pray for the Harris’ and for our churches. They should lead us to a deeper understanding of the gospel and exultation of the gospel of Christ and simultaneously, an introspection concerning our biblical fidelity and the depth of our commitment to Christ and to biblical Christianity. But this heartbreaking headline also reminds us that we can place our trust in no sinful human being, but in Christ alone, the one who alone is worthy of our trust. Evangelicals should ponder what this tragic headline news tells us about our susceptibility to consumer culture and also to a celebrity culture. There is always a danger. It is impossible to have some level of influence without some level of celebrity, but we must test everything by the Scriptures. And we also have to understand as the early church had to come to know that there are some who appear to be believers and even have influence, even pastors, but eventually fall away. That has to be acknowledged. There’s something of extreme importance in this case, and I say this as a president of a theological seminary and or Christian college, but this is just as emphatically important. There has to be a theological depth. The only way we’re going to be able to sustain a biblical sexual ethic and the truth of the gospel of Jesus is by serious biblical content, serious biblical knowledge, deep theology, apologetics, (which is the defense of Scripture), biblical theology, a deep understanding, celebration of, and embrace of the gospel of Jesus. Understanding that gospel, the true gospel, the biblical gospel, the gospel of Jesus Christ against all superficial pretenders and against also false theologies including any form of legalism that can creep in.

I spoke about the legalism and the homeschool movement years ago when I saw a very damaging teaching coming out of the homeschool movement that wasn’t based in the Bible, it was based in human wisdom and human reasoning. And that ended up being very damaging. Josh Harris unfortunately was a part of that. But the question that comes out of this now— is it possible for a believer to unbelie? Is it possible? Is it possible to walk away? And that’s what this mom is asking. And so the question of whether or not a believer can walk away from the Lord, it always comes up in an attempt to explain these kinds of situations which involve people that we know.

Over at Got Questions— this is one of my favorite places to come for biblical answers. He addresses it this way, not just the Josh Harris thing, but he’s talking about other people who are prominent skeptics, but they started out as professing believers. So check this out. Dan Barker, atheist and president of the freedom from religion foundation. You guys are familiar with that, right? They are a pain in the side of churches everywhere. He started out as a minister and a Christian musician. Did you guys know that? Charles Templeton, who has died now, was an evangelist who toured at one time with Billy Graham, but then later became an outspoken agnostic. Bart Erman is a New York Times bestselling author and a well known skeptic who continually cast doubt upon the reliability of the New Testament. Erman describes himself as a former born again fundamentalist. He studied at Moody Bible Institute and graduated from Wheaton. So aside from these high profile cases— are thousands, perhaps millions of people who have made professions of faith often as children, but in later years maintain no faith in Jesus. And whether they call themselves agnostic or atheist or simply uninterested, they have left the faith.

So then the question remains, what do we make of these people? Were they born again believers at one point and now they’re not born again? Well, if we want the answer, we need to look to the Bible. We need to go to God’s Word. We can’t know the human heart. Only God can know the human heart. So the first possibility is that—well, these people were saved and they’re not going to lose their salvation. We see an in-working of the Holy Spirit in their lives, they’ve been indwelt and sealed by the Holy Spirit. And since God’s salvation is irreversible, and this is what I was taught as a child and what I continue to believe— once a person is saved, he’ll always be saved. That’s what my grandparents taught me. This is what I studied in school. This is what I still believe.

I will say this: as we talk about whether or not a person can lose his salvation, it’s very important to remember that the Bible and history— they’re filled with examples of people who came to know Christ and then later on they fell away. Have you guys ever read the parable of the sower and the seed? This is one that we used to listen to the donut man’s. I know I’m dating myself right now, but some of you guys will listen to the donut man. Do you remember the parable of the sower? It talks about the dude who scattered the seed and the seed fell on four different types of soil. There was the hard ground by the wayside that prevented the seed from sprouting at all. And so the seed became nothing more than bird food. The stony ground provided just enough soil for the seed to germinate and begin to grow. But because there was no deepness of the earth, the plants wouldn’t take root and then they withered under the sun. The thorny ground allowed the seed to grow, but the competing thorns all around it, and I see this everywhere, this is how this is how I would call it, this is what I would call the culture today. There’s the stony ground, which is the modern church providing just enough soil. This is the seeker sensitive church. Just enough soil for the seed to germinate and grow. But because there’s no depth to the earth and no depth to the teaching, the soil is about a half an inch thick and 3000 miles wide. This is the seeker sensitive church. We’re not creating disciples. We’re just bringing people in with our amazing music and our fog machines and all that, but we’re not discipling them. Churches that disciple are rare today. I would say the stony ground really describes what the modern church has come to be a part of.

The thorny ground is the culture. The thorny ground allows the seed to grow, but the competing thorns all around it chokes the life out of the plants that are good. The good ground is the one that receives the seed and produces fruit. So Jesus’ explanation of the parable of the sower is talking about four responses that we can have to the gospel. So the seed is the word of the kingdom. The hard ground represents somebody who’s hardened by sin. He hears it, but he doesn’t understand the Word, and Satan plucks the message away and the guy’s heart is kept from understanding. It prevents him from believing in the Word, prevents him from coming to the Lord.

The stony ground shows us a man who professes delight with the Word; however, his heart is not changed, and when trouble arises, this faith that he said that he had— it goes away. The thorny ground is depicting the one who seems to receive the Word, but whose heart is full of riches and pleasures. This is the person who just loves the spotlight. He loves the followers he’s got an Instagram. He’s instagramming our Bible study times. We’re talking about how we’re growing in the Lord. But ultimately the things of the world take our attention away from the Lord and we end up not having ever grown in the Word at all. The good ground portrays the one who hears, understands, and receives the Word—and then allows the Word to accomplish its result in his life.

The man that’s represented by the good ground is the only one of those four who is truly saved because salvation’s proof is in the fruit. In Matthew 3:7-8— But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. In Matthew 7:15-20 says— “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

We’re looking for a fruit in the lives of our kids. We should be looking for a fruit in the lives of our pastors, in the lives of the people that we follow. Fruit does not equal money. Fruit does not equal followers on Instagram. Fruit does not equal Facebook followers, or if you’ve made the New York Times best selling list. I got to say, there are a lot of Christians out making the New York Times bestseller list who I am concerned for the condition of their heart. I’m not trying to be a jerk, I’m serious. We are going to fall into disobedience. We are going to sin. We’re going to struggle with doubt—but if we really believe the Lord and we’re really walking with Him, we will never renounce Christ.

A person who has renounced Christ—this is what I get from Scripture: The person who renounces Christ, either by his words or his actions, and I have had people like this in my life, in my family who I love deeply— I would not say that a person has lost salvation. I would say that that person never had genuine faith in the first place. This is the reason why knowing the Bible is so important. This is the reason why church discipline is so important. This is the reason why as believers, we follow Matthew 18. If you see somebody who claims to know Jesus on there and they are not controlled by the Spirit and they are living in sin and we are unwilling to address it, we’re unwilling to bring it up, we’re unwilling to call that person out— I’m telling you what: it will reap a terrible fruit in the long run.

There’s a reason why Satan is after these so-called shepherds. There are good people, good men and women who are falling the Lord Jesus and are genuine in their faith and are drawn into sin. And then there are people who have never been genuine in their faith in the first place, and they’d been given a platform before they were ready for it. And they never really believed in the first place. They may have even thought they believed, but they never did because a genuine believer cannot renounces faith because it’s the Spirit of God that regenerates us. A born again person has the Spirit of God in them and that is what never leaves you. That’s why I say that if you are a believer, you are sealed because you have the Spirit of the living God.

It’s not our faith that keeps us safe from what this mom called renouncing, or deconstruction, or whatever the popular term is right now. It is the power of the Spirit of the living God in us that enables us to walk in faith in Jesus. This is why we started MomStrong International. This is why I keep telling people it’s not enough for you guys just to go to church and raise your hands and sing the songs. We have to know the Word of God and we’ve got to be talking to each other about what it means to walk in right relationship with God. So these are difficult questions, but we need to be talking about them as believers. We need to be honest about where we are. People can fake it for a long time, but they can’t sustain it forever. Truth will come out.

1 John 3:9 says— No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. So a genuine believer is kept from falling into continuous sin because he’s been born of God. God keeps him safe. That’s the Holy Spirit inside that says— no, no, no. Stop. I love you. You’re close to the edge. You’re walking away from me. This isn’t what I want for you. A person who is born again is going to listen to the voice of God. It doesn’t mean that we don’t sin. We all struggle with sin, but it means that we are listening to and indwelt by the power of the Spirit of God. It’s the power of God that enables us to walk out our faith in our everyday lives.

I hope this has been an encouragement to you. I realize I went over a little bit today. There’s never enough time to get to all your questions here at mailbox Monday. So thanks for listening everybody. We sure appreciate it. We love you so much and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday.
