A Case for Homemaking

A case for homemaking edited 2

I’ve been having some sort of inner crisis lately. I’ve been burnt out on doing what I HAVE to do and not really feeling like I am doing anything I WANT to do. I haven’t even been able to think of what it is I would rather do. I’ve been at a stand still and not happy there.

There was a lot of work to be done all those years raising little ones, but there was also an element of gratification to it. It was simpler in so many ways. I’m not there anymore.

Having older kids is great in the respect that they can tie their own shoes, shower themselves, help out with chores around the house, etc, but it’s much more mentally and emotionally taxing. It reminds me of that saying, “Little kids wreck your house and big kids wreck your mind.” Life just feels much more fragmented now.

So I’ve found myself less than excited about keeping house, making meals, etc. It feels like it’s pointless..after 25 years, it’s still never finished. But I don’t think that’s really the point.

I’ve had a cluttered heart and mind and haven’t been sure what the problem is or what the solution could possibly be. So I did all I know to to: I prayed and asked God to give me wisdom (James 1:5) and His eyes to see things the way He does.

What I discovered was simple and yet profound: I am missing that basic gratification that comes with the menial, simple tasks of keeping a home.

We have trained our kids to help around the house and in order for life to run smoothly in the midst of busy tweens and teens, we really do need their help.

But there is something to be said for folding a warm load of laundry… one that hasn’t been sitting in there for 2 days and is now cold and wrinkled. There’s a satisfaction in cleaning the kitchen thoroughly with my own two hands and joy in filling our home with the comforting aroma of a well planned, home cooked meal. There can be such peace in finishing a task like washing the windows or polishing the table top.

I’m not taking the kids’ chore responsibilities away, but I’ve decided to participate more and work alongside them…like I did when they were younger.  I will also work alone quietly, with my own hands and my own thoughts.

When my house is in order, my world seems calmer and less chaotic.  We aren’t talking perfection here, but there’s something about working with our hands that helps our hearts sort things out. I think God meant it to be that way.

I am not saying that all house work is  for women only (just ask my teenage boys), but we are one of many generations of homemakers who have gone before us. For centuries, women have bent over the stove/fire and prepared meals for their families, maintained their homes and created an atmosphere that helped keep the family cohesive. We were born at different times, but we are part of that sisterhood that spans between now and the dawn of time.

It might be good for our hearts to remember that these “menial” tasks just may be more valuable than this culture gives them credit for. Jesus was about servanthood…about the small things, because, quite often, the countless little things really turn out to be the big things.

Heidi St. John’s Favorite Chicken – Stock Up and SAVE

Hi moms!

Alrightey. I’m a mom of conviction and passion—who also cooks.  🙂  If you have followed me for any length of time, you KNOW I love this company! Great food, GREAT customer service—pretty much, you can’t go wrong.

Fresh, delivered to my area, hormone-free—and I can order enough to feed the small army that my husband and I have created all-by-ourselves.  🙂

I’m stocking up—again–because a girl can’t have too much great chicken in her freezer!  If you don’t have a deep freeze—consider splitting a case with a friend.  You will be glad you went with this outstanding company… I pinky-promise!  Zaycon is worth it.

You’ll need to find your area and then see if they still have product coming to your neck of the woods. There’s till time… don’t wait.  (I waited too long once, and after I told y’all about it, my truck sold out.)  Boo.

5 Tips For Getting Out The Door Faster

5 Tips for Getting Out the Door Faster @thebusymom.com

Our family has been through a huge transition over the past few months. After 8 years of homeschooling, we enrolled our kids in a small, private Christian school in our town! So, for the first time in 12 years of mothering, we are finding ourselves needing to be a little, teensy bit better about preparation, organization and getting out the door in the mornings on time.

Even if your kids aren’t in school, you might need to get out the door earlier for church, homeschool co-op or just a doctor’s appointment. We all have times when we have to be somewhere at 8am!  And as the holidays are upon us, it seems there is always somewhere else to go, right?

Now, I will preface this post by saying I’m an on-time person. Or even early, generally speaking. I have an almost compulsive quality about me that drives my husband nuts. If something starts at 8am, I do NOT want to be walking in at 8am. I want to be there, in my seat and have everything I need for the event around 7:55am-ish. So, that said, I hope this post will still help you even if you tend to be one that runs late everywhere you go. I think we can all make progress and do better in this area, even if you generally are on time most days!

5 Tips for Getting Out The Door Faster

1. Prepare as much as possible the night before. I *might* be a tad bit compulsive about this too. I walk around my house at night looking for something, anything I can do that might help the morning go better. I help my kids find shoes, clothing, everything they will need BEFORE they go to bed. I set out all their lunch boxes, water bottles, and backpacks. I look through the backpacks at night to pull out papers I might have missed or needed to look at. Everything is ready to go.

2. Get up 10 minutes earlier. This one is hard; I really, really like my sleep. But, if you can make yourself get up a little bit earlier, isn’t it worth that lack of frustration in running around your house like a mad woman? I have noticed that when I am up, even a few minutes earlier than my kids, I am more calm when they lose a shoe or take 20 minutes to brush their teeth. {grin}

3. Make bedtime smooth and earlier. This is another hard one. But, if your kids are up late watching tv (or even mom, ahem) getting up earlier will be even harder! That bedtime routine you had when your kids were toddlers? Don’t stop! Keep that routine going or start a new one. They may not need to be in bed by 7:30pm anymore, but as my kids get older, it is still important to me that they get enough sleep!! START the bedtime process 30 minutes earlier than you intend for them to go to sleep. Have your children help you in walking around the house looking for backpacks, shoes and whatever they will need to get going in the morning.

4. Pack a tote bag for each day of the week, or each outing in your week. I’ve done this in the past with a pool bag. I keep sunscreen, goggles, the pool pass and anything I need at the pool IN THE BAG and I don’t pack, unpack, repack that bag every time we go to the pool! Have a bag like this for your weekly co-op, have a bag ready for church. When you walk in from co-op, hang it on a hook and it’s already ready for next week!

5. Turn on upbeat praise music. I saved my favorite for last. I can’t tell you how many bad moods a little Mandisa had zapped away in my household, mom included! Sometimes, out of desperation and just not wanting to hear one more, “I can’t find my shoe! HE THREW MY SHOE! Mommy, make him find my shoe!” I turn on the radio in our kitchen and turn it up. So maybe this would be considered avoidance. I like to think of it is as pointing my children to Jesus. {grin} Sometimes we need a little re-focus and music is just the way to do this. So, if you want to be one step ahead of your argumentative children, turn that music on as soon as you wake up the kiddos!! Everyone will walk around the house singing, getting ready, and you will wonder what in the world has gotten into everyone! Actually, as a wise mother, you will know what has gotten into them!! Praise fights off the worst of our enemies!! So get your praise on, first thing in the morning!

I hope these tips help you! I’m sure as veteran busy moms you have some tips for us, too! I would love for you to share in the comment section YOUR best tips for getting moving and out the door in the mornings!

The Busy Mom’s Fall Menu and Planning PRINTABLE!

menu_screenshot

SO, it’s here. School has started. Time for routine, time for a new schedule, time to get.this.train.moving.

Every year, I make a different printable to motivate my houseful of—ummm—eager helpers.

This year, I’ve switched things up a bit by including three smaller sections on my printable planner. I’ve also added a space for you to assign laundry to different people on different days.  As our kids get older, I’ve given them their own days to do their own laundry. If your kids are little, it might be a place for you to assign a room or something like “bedding” on a particular day. Do what works for you. Be creative! Stress down.

Also, while the menu thing is a big deal—try not to overcomplicate it. There’s a line there… just one—because that’s all you need to write the word “spaghetti” or “chili” or “cereal.”  Here’s the thing: just knowing that you’ve got what you need in the fridge and have a plan in place will save you tons of time and emotional energy.

Hey. The life you save might be your own! Honestly! When I I have a meal plan, my life is a whole lot less stress-filled. I use my crockpot religiously, too. 🙂  Just in case you’re wondering.

You can do this, busy moms! Feel the rush of routine. And then, buckle up! We’re off to a new school year!

Download your Menu/Shopping/Laundry printable here!

In case you missed it, here’s my complete menu printable from last year, too!

The Busy Mom’s Favorites {Online Grocery Shopping}

Busy Mom's Favorite Groceries To Buy Online

Confession: I’m an Amazon Subscribe and Save junkie.  I’m sort of new to thew whole online grocery thing (about a year now) but I have tell you:  I have not run out of TP in a year. And my family thinks I’m some sort of cereal rock star, since we’re never out now and I can serve it for dinner if I need to.  (Don’t judge.)  Imagine my sheer joy when my friend and Busy Mom writer, Candace, said that she was doing the SAME THING!  We are like sisters from another mother! As a fellow Subscribe and Saver, Candace knows the power and convenience of SS&S.  Of course there’s always the fact that it saves us both from impulse shopping means we’ve got more money left to buy things we really want, like—well, we can get those on Amazon, too. My new favorite thing to get from them are my makeup remover cloths from Neutrogena and my gluten-free snack bars. Mmm.  If you haven’t subscribed yet, read on and see what you can do to same time and money using Amazon. We think you’ll be an ASSJ before you know it!

With a new school year upon us, most of us busy moms are about to get even busier! That is why I LOVE buying as many groceries online as I possibly can! I’ve been purchasing online, through Amazon’s Subscribe and Save program, for over a year now, and I can say it is WONDERFUL to have groceries and household goods delivered straight to your front porch! No shipping with Amazon Prime!

First of all, just a little tip to get you started. When you get to Amazon’s main page, scroll over to “Shop By Department” and a list of departments should pop up, then click on Health, Beauty and Grocery. After that you should see a “Subscribe and Save” section. This is where you want to find what items are available for Subscribe and Save. Unfortunately not every item you may want to purchase can be a subscription item, so you just have to look around and find things that are available by subscription.

Next, when you come to an item you want to purchase or subscribe to, look over to the right hand side of the screen and see the price difference! YAY! Notice the arrow on the picture below, this is where you can see 1) if an item is available for Subscribe and Save and 2) what you will be saving by subscribing monthly to this item!

Busy Mom's Favorite Groceries To Buy Online

You do get to choose how often you will receive your item! You can choose monthly, every 2 months, up to every 6 months! Also, you can cancel your subscriptions at any time, with no charges! It’s super easy and very wonderful. 🙂 Finally, you need to order FIVE items to come monthly to your home to get the FULL savings of 15% off your order, so keep that in mind also!

{This post contains affiliate links.}

So, what do I order on Amazon’s Subscribe and Save program?

This Busy Mom’s Favorite Groceries To Purchase Online

1. Clif Bars. We love these for days we need to pack lunches (which hasn’t been a daily thing) or we are going on a field trip or just need protein we can take in the car. These babies are expensive if you purchase just one of them at Walmart! Notice they are $13.49 regularly, but if you subscribe to them you pay $11.47.

2. Maple Syrup. We have used various brands over the years, if they run out of one brand or no longer offer it for Subscribe and Save, you can search and find another brand.

3. Shampoo. I like buying big bottles that last longer. Search for brands you use to see if you can save on shampoo!

4. Fruit Leathers. I love buying healthier snacks online in bulk. I live in a tiny town and can’t find these locally, so it’s nice to just get them delivered to my door instead of driving an hour for them!

5. K-cups. Woot! Instead of paying .50 per cup, you can pay .31 cents per k-cup. These that I have found are biodegradable, so earth friendly with a softer pouch on the bottom, but they work great in my Keurig! And they are so much cheaper. (Of course, if you want to be even cheaper, use the refillable k-cup and put in coffee out of a can each morning. We have used the Ecobrew for several years now and it works great!)

6. Toilet paper. We are not picky about our toilet paper, EXCEPT I don’t like the super thin stuff, so this is about halfway between the super thin and the quilted thick stuff.

7. Hairspray. Now, before you jump all over me, I know not everyone wants special types of hair products. {grin} But if you do, one way to save on them is to order online. Just take a look to see if your favorite brands are any cheaper on amazon!

8. Cleaning Supplies. These Clorox Wipes happen to be $1 cheaper than our Walmart!

9. Diapers & Wipes. We are out of the diaper stage, but if you are currently there, Amazon has a program called the Amazon Mom and you can get 20% off your diapers! Yippee!

10. Gluten Free Products. This is another item that we can’t find a lot of in our tiny town. So, if you eat any type of specialty item or health food, I would highly recommend searching Amazon!

11. Vitamins & Supplements. Things like probiotics, herbal supplements, cleanses, protein powder, etc, may be cheaper by ordering online and subscribing.

Busy moms, I hope this has helped you figure out a few ways to save your MONEY and your TIME in the coming months! I’ve been ordering this way for quite awhile now and am happy to answer any questions you may have in the comment section!  Happy Saving!

When You Can’t Get It “All” Done: Confessions of a Recovering Perfectionist

plans

The other day, a sweet mom in Harrisburg asked me, “What does your day look like?” In other words, “HOW DO YOU GET IT ALL DONE?”  I love this question, because it allows me to be totally transparent with whomever I’m talking to, and hopefully, speak a little freedom at the same time.

Basically, I have two answers for that particular Busy Mom FAQ:

1) I have a book (and a workshop on CD) about that called, The Busy Homeschool Mom’s Guide to Daylight! Really, you should check it out … it’s full of ideas and encouragement for busy moms like you! 🙂

2) While there are many practical tips for getting things done, I hesitate to tell you how I do it ALL.  Why?  Because the reality is that I don’t do “it all.” Not even close. No one does.

I am a recovering perfectionist.  “Type A” at my core.  It’s easy for me to judge the inside of my life by the outside of someone else’s. I see “that mom” who’s blogging and homeschooling and pinning her latest frugal fashion finds and I think, “What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I be like that?” Can you relate?

If you can, be encouraged, because no one is doing it all. They’re really not. Pictures only tell a nano-second of the real story; the rest goes unseen—and the rest of the story is this: Pinterest Perfect Mom isn’t getting it all done either, because she doesn’t exist.

Of course, it’s important to get things done—but how these things get done will look different in each family, each year, each season, and likely even for each child. And that’s okay. You don’t have to try and be SuperMom. You just need to be surrendered.

Only God knows exactly the plans He has for you – and the best way to find out what that plan is… is to listen.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Don’t you love that? I do, because it means I’m free to seek God’s heart for my family—free to stop comparing my life to that woman I think is “super mom” and free to be all that God has created me to be.

Are you listening to that “still, small voice?” It’s so hard to be still, but it is a requirement if we’re going to hear from God in this bustling, busy world.

Shhh.  He’s still speaking.
