No One Should Die Alone with Steve Reiter

Steve’s wife was diagnosed with a illness that proved to be fatal, but he was not allowed to be with her because of the COVID Pandemic. He has been on an incredible heartbreaking journey. I’m honored to have him on the show.  Listen in to part one of our two part conversation to hear his story and the project that was born from it.

On April 29, 2020, my wife, Elizabeth, was hospitalized with double pneumonia and a blood infection … despite us both being tested negative for COVID (her 2nd negative test), I wasn’t allowed to be by her side. On her 21st day at Univ. of CO Hospital-Anschutz, she was set to come home, but a blood clot hit her lungs and killed her. I didn’t get to see her until she was gone.

It’s clear that the American healthcare system was woefully under-prepared for this pandemic, especially with the reduction of the national stockpiles of PPE and hundreds of thousands of Americans were caused immeasurable harm by facing doctor appointments, medical procedures, giving birth, ER visits, short and long term hospital stays all by themselves … ALONE.

There’s a balance between protecting doctors, nurses, staff, and other patients from a pandemic and giving the individual the human contact, support, and human touch we so desperately need … most hospitals and medical facilities pretty much ignored the needs of the individuals to protect the collective.
This is human rights abuse.

The NEVER Alone Project exists to mobilize a community to raise awareness about the dangers of isolation in the healthcare system and heal together so that we can work to pass the necessary regulatory/legislative change to protect people from forced isolation.

The NEVER Alone Project exists to wants to see a world where patients have the right to at least one screened visitor per day with no time limits.
