[Heidi] Hey everybody, this is Heidi St. John, welcome to the podcast. Today is Monday, October 28th. This is episode number 837. You guys, we’re at the end of October, what in the world? I’m not even sure when that happened, but I’m going to talk to you about one of my favorite topics today and that is my journey away from anxiety and sleep medication, and kind of what the Lord’s done in my life and how I got there. I’ve got a guest on the show today, and I love her. She’s my sister, Haley. Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.
So, lots of stuff to talk about today. Several weeks ago, I posted on my Facebook page that I had suffered, if you guys have read any of my books or listened to my podcast for very long then you know, that I have shared this story of growing up in a home that was less than ideal, to say the least. Being diagnosed with anxiety when I was in my early twenties and then my struggle with just anxiety and panic, and I wrote about it on Facebook because the Lord has really set me free from that over the course of many years. There’ve been lots of things that have helped me, and I just kind of gave a shout out to a few of those things that the Lord has really done in my life to help me really heal and live my life from a position of strength.
I was amazed at the number of letters that came in. So I thought, “I’m going to address this today at Mailbox Monday.” One of the things I’m working on doing a little bit differently going forward, because we have so many letters that come in every week, is I’m going to start bringing people on the show with me occasionally to help me answer questions. So, I’m going to read a couple of those for you today, and then we’re just going to jump in and I’m going to introduce my sister, and you guys are going to love her as much as I do.
Here’s the first question, “Heidi, I’m a listener from Utah, and I saw that you wrote recently about your journey away from anxiety and how you found and got interested in essential oils. Could you please clarify?” So, I’m going to work on that today. Here’s another one. Another listener has written to me saying, “Heidi, I would appreciate it if you would clarify about your struggle with anxiety and what kinds of things have helped you to overcome it.”
So this was just a sampling of the letters that I got and the posts that we got on Facebook. So today, I’m going to talk about that a little bit, and I’ve asked my sister, Haley, to come on the show with me today. Haley’s my little sister. You guys know, I said I have five sisters, so Heidi, Heather, Holly, Haley, Hope, Hilary. My husband’s family is all J’s: Jay, Jerry, Jessica, Jasmine, Jody. I’ve got Ss: Savannah, Sierra, Sky, Spencer, Summer, Sydney. It’s a sickness, so just pray for us. We need all the help we can get, but Haley’s in the studio with me today, and I’m just real happy that she’s here. So hey, Haley, welcome.
[Haley] Hi, everybody. Thanks for having me on, sis.
[Heidi] So, it’s fun to see you in this contest because usually you and I are running the homeschool resource center, or taking care of our kids, or figuring out new Crockpot recipes, or like tonight, I’m hoping to wrestle you into helping me paint in my house.
[Haley] I knew that was coming.
[Heidi] Because my house is pretty torn up right now since every pipe in my house had to be replaced.
[Haley] Yes, it is.
[Heidi] We finally got the sheet rock up, so I have paint tonight. So at that, Haley-
[Haley] Progress, paint party at the St. John’s.
[Heidi] Yes. Yeah. Anybody who wants to come, we’re going to try to. My house has been apart for what? Six months now, at least. Just been crazy over there. But anyway, Haley, I do have a big pot roast waiting for you if you want to come help me paint.
[Haley] No pressure. I’ll be there, yes.
[Heidi] I thought if I asked her on the podcast, how could she say no? So, you and I have been palling around since the dawn of time, so I thought it’d be fun for listeners to hear a little bit about our relationship and what it was like growing up, because you’re a little bit younger than me.
[Haley] Just a little bit.
[Heidi] You were like my person, right?
[Haley] Yes. Yeah. So growing up, our parents paired the older siblings with the younger siblings-
[Heidi] Because there were seven of us.
[Haley] Yeah, and Heidi and I are 10 years apart, and she was my person.
[Haley] So she probably, yeah, taught me all the things.
[Heidi] I probably raised you. I may or may not have raised you. You turned out pretty good.
[Haley] I turned out pretty good, and here I am homeschooling and using essential oils and doing all the things, doing life with you.
[Heidi] Yeah, yeah.
[Haley] It’s so fun. Now, I live down the street from her and-
[Heidi] It’s really fun. Yeah.
[Haley] Yeah, it’s really good. God’s been so good to us.
[Heidi] It’s good to have sisters. I think it’s fun when you can do life with somebody who’s got a shared history with you. You’re a relatively new homeschool mom too.
[Haley] I am.
[Heidi] How long? You’ve been homeschooling for a year now.
[Haley] Yeah. We just hit our a year mark last month. Yeah.
[Heidi] That’s exciting. How’s it going? Because you pulled, for people who don’t know, you pulled your kids out of public school, and I think I overheard you saying that it wasn’t very fun to have me for a sister. I’m pretty sure. I’m pretty sure I heard that, Haley. There’s a pot roast hanging in the balance.
[Haley] I might have said that, yes. Followed by, “My sister Heidi was the very last person we told that we were going to homeschool,” but truth be told, it’s because we knew where she stood on it, and we wanted to know for sure that that was where our conviction was leading us. So, she’s been a blessing to have alongside us through this journey, and we’re so glad that we did.
[Heidi] So, you took your kids out. How old were they? Because I know there are people listening going, “I don’t know if I could take my kids out of school,” but you did it.
[Haley] Yeah. My oldest at the time was going into fifth grade, and then I had a third grader, and I had a preschooler who is in the Special Ed program at our local preschool program at our public school.
[Heidi] Yeah, yeah. Now you’re just doing great. It’s so fun to watch you.
[Haley] Yeah, my kids are doing fantastic. It really has been such a blessing. Such a struggle in the beginning, but what isn’t a struggle when you first leap into something new?
[Heidi] Yeah. That’s right, and everything that’s worth doing in this life is going to be hard. Married more than five minutes, hard.
[Heidi] We both turned to look at my husband in the control room like, “Hey, love you.” Jay’s like, “Yeah, you right.” Oh Haley, I didn’t tell you this, but when I was in Nebraska… So, you guys have to understand our family, our grandparents come from Nebraska. So, I went to speak in Lincoln, Nebraska last week and it was just a wonderful time. They gave me a shirt, I haven’t shown it to you yet, but they made me a shirt that says, “You right.”
[Haley] That’s awesome.
[Heidi] I know. I was like, “Yes, I love a statement shirt. Yeah, you right.” So, we may or may not be saying that a lot today, but one of the reasons why I wanted to have you come on is because you and I have a shared love of essential oils.
[Heidi] I’ve been working with them for over 10 years now. I was introduced to essential oils, believe it or not, when I was probably back in the East coast, and I was pregnant with, I can’t remember who, probably Sailor. I remember somebody telling me about essential oils and I was like, “Oh, that’s neat. It sounds like a fad.”
Sometimes I’ll travel and people will give me things. I was talking about a struggle that I was having with anxiety, and this woman came up to me and she was like, “You should try this essential oil. It can help just support your body systems so that it will bring calming, and the smells are so good and how your olfactory system works,” and I was kind of sort of fascinated by it, but I was pretty busy.
So I was like, “Oh, thank you,” sticking in my airline bag. Then I started doing a little bit of homework, but when Sailor was born, I was speaking at an event in Maryland, and I came down with mastitis. You know that first beginning feeling that you’re just like, “I’m going to get mastitis”?
[Haley] This is going to be a bummer.
[Heidi] This going to be a drag. I don’t know why, but I announced it from the front as I’m speaking. I was like, “You guys should pray for me. I feel like I’m going to get mastitis.” This lady comes up to me at the break or whatever, and she said, “Here.” She hands me a bottle of Thieves, and she’s like, “You should put this on your breast.” She said, “I’m telling you, this will really help you.” I was like, “Get away from me with your Thieves.” I’m like, “That it’s not going to work.” You know, low and behold, I was so desperate. I’m away from home. I don’t have access to my doctor, to antibiotics, and I loathe to call it in when you’re traveling, and I didn’t want to go to an emergency room, so I thought, “What have I got to lose?”
So I tried it and for goodness sake, after that I was, I was hooked. I started doing research, and I began to discover that it’s fantastic for supporting so many different body systems, and it really did help me. I mean, you and I have been hanging around each other for a long time, I think it’s fair to say, and you have watched me sort of up close and personal with my struggle with anxiety, and just the really real ramifications that had on my family, and on my marriage.
I’ve been just asking the Lord just to help me, and we did a variety of things, but I want to talk to you today specifically about oils. Before Haley and I get into, I think it’s important to say in case you guys are wondering, we’re not physicians. All right? So, this is the traditional disclaimer, but I’m not here to tell you to stop your medications. What I would like to do is encourage you, if you’re struggling with anxiety, and you’re going to hear Haley, because Haley has an awesome story also, but what we want you to do is really work with your doctor, and then figure out a plan that works with your unique medical condition.
We just really want to share the story of our journey with essential oils, specifically Young Living, which is what I’ve been using for over 10 years. So, that was kind of my introduction to essential oils really on the road, just people coming up to me.
[Haley] Word of mouth.
[Heidi] Yeah, and I’m realizing, “This is kind of amazing.” I began to talk to you about it, but how did you get introduced to essential oils? When was the first time you really heard about it and were like, “I wonder if that could work for me?”
[Haley] Yeah, actually my husband has prior service, and so we were living in Iowa at the time, and my youngest, who is almost six, was an infant and was in and out of the hospital.
[Heidi] Yeah. It was a major deal.
[Haley] It was a very major deal. The doctors thought that he had chronic asthma. So, we were in and out of the hospital all the time, and I had a friend in Iowa who had been using essential oils. So, she brought me some essential oils to help him breathe because not only was he on 24 hours a day of having back-to-back breathing treatments, but he also was on back-to-back antibiotics because of the chronic illnesses that he kept getting.
So, that’s how we got introduced. We were given stuff, like eucalyptus, to help him breathe. We would put it on his chest, we would put it… I was desperate. Isn’t that kind of how you start out? You’re like, “This isn’t working that I need something.”
[Heidi] That’s how the Thieves thing started for me. I was desperate.
[Haley] Yeah, I need something. I was totally, totally a skeptic. My husband and I were both like, “What is she bringing us? This little liquid in a bottle? This is going to help?” What the doctors had been giving had been helping, but what we were looking for was trying to treat the root of it to help out our infant son.
[Heidi] Really, I remember talking to you about at the time, because you were telling me, “We’re looking at doing this, and we’re seeing it change. We’re seeing it’s actually helping.” Because what these oils do is they get in, and they support the body system, and they add that support, and their natural. That’s what’s so amazing. I mean, they’re made from plants.
Recently, Jay and I went to Utah and we went to the Young Living Lavender Farm, which is really cool, and we got to see how they make the oils. We watched them distill it from the big tractors that bring the plants in, and we got to watch the process. So, we know that the oils that we’re using are good for you, right? They have a seed to seal guarantees, so you can actually see how they make them and how good they are for you.
This, as a mother at least, I mean, if we’re going to be putting something on our bodies, particularly when it comes to our kids, we’re diffusing things. We light candles all the time, we don’t think about the chemicals that those candles are releasing into the air. Something that you and I have talked about for a long time is really wanting to see our houses chemical free. I mean, I used to be like a bleachaholic. I used to bleach for everything. When you got seven kids, that’s what you do. Just bleach it. A little bleach for you. I was like the Oprah, “And you get some bleach and you get some bleach.” But really, that stuff’s bad for you.
[Heidi] So, we started looking to see what are some natural alternatives. I think another part of the reason why we love essential oils so much and for me, looking, kind of going back to now, I’m starting to realize as back to my sort of 10 years ago again, I’m realizing, “Wow, this isn’t Hocus Pocus. It’s actually awesome.”
[Heidi] It’s been so good for our family. So, I began to really look into, can this help me with my anxiety? I had been on anxiety medicine. I mean, I was diagnosed with general anxiety disorder when I was 20. So, we’re talking about now here I am in my late thirties, early forties, and I’m discovering that there are other things besides chemicals that we can put into our bodies.
Again, it’s not just the oils. You’re not going to get an oil and then suddenly, “Yay, your anxiety is gone.” It’s a combination of things. It’s really learning to lean into the Lord and pray about it, and ask the Lord to surround me with people who would speak truth into my life, because that’s so big, that’s so important. Then, learning how to use these oils in coordination with-
[Haley] When I think in opening up our eyes and our ears and our hearts to new things that can better our situation with our family, that’s a large part of it too, is just being open and trusting that the Lord’s going to bring those people in to provide this new information.
[Heidi] Yeah, yeah. That’s totally right. So, I started looking for a different direction and began diffusing. I got a diffuser. I thought, “What could it hurt?” I realized, “Oh my goodness.” It was just a calming. So, I put one by my bed because I always felt like my anxiety was worse at night, so I thought, “I’ll put one by my bed,” and my husband’s like, “That’s smells really good. What’s in there?” I said, “Well, it’s Stress Away, and here’s what’s in it,” and kind of reading the ingredients in Stress Away, and I started to realize, “This is benefiting. It’s actually helping.”
Over the course of several years of learning more about my own body and kind of what triggers it, right? Because anxiety is triggered by certain things, and eventually I was able to totally get off my medication. So it took me a long time, but I got off and I think it was the 24th of September I celebrated a year of not on anything at all.
[Haley] I know. That’s so great. That’s so great. I’m so proud of you. So proud of her.
[Heidi] She’s so proud of me. She’s so proud of me. That’s right. I’m 10 years older than her, and so I’m always trying to make her proud of me. But, it’s been kind of a journey for me, and I think the Lord wants us to be free. I don’t think that the Lord wants us dependent on drugs, particularly when it comes to things like anxiety. I was like, “Lord, there has to be a better way.” I just remember thinking, “Father, help. I need your help.”
I mean it’s funny, Jay just came in the studio when Haley and I are in here getting ready and he’s like, “Whoa, it smells a little oily in here.” Because Haley got Stress Away on, and we got Raven and Joy and some of our favorite oils just sitting here. So Haley, you’ve got little ones still at home.
[Heidi] You and I have had lots of conversations about how you’ve been using them to kind of help with focus. So, maybe take us through a day in the life. So when you’re doing homeschooling, I saw you post on Instagram the other day that you’re diffusing something amazing. What were you diffusing?
[Haley] I was diffusing Joy and Citrus Fresh because they help set the mood. Oftentimes when you sit down with your kids and you’ve got the pushback of, “I don’t want to do school. What? We have to stop our Lego building now? Really, mom?”
[Heidi] What, that happens? What?
[Haley] So, I try to set the mood beforehand. You know when you crack open, when somebody goes and peels and orange, that smell is just invigorating.
[Heidi] Invigorating. Jinx. You owe me a coke.
[Haley] Yes. It smells so good. So, setting the mood is really good and being consistent is also, I think, really key. When you go to start something new, it’s not going to take the first whiff of it to really set in, but being consistent with it, it’s going to trigger the memory. Then from there, it’s going to move forward. So yes, I was diffusing Joy and I was diffusing that Citrus Fresh.
[Heidi] I love Joy. It smells so good.
[Haley] Yeah. So, we had a good homeschool school day with my older ones. My younger one still gave me pushback with the whole reading because he was bummed out about something that he drew.
[Heidi] We need to come up with a blend, and we’re going to call it Love Your Mama.
[Haley] Love Your Mama. That’s right.
[Heidi] Love Your Mama.
[Haley] That’s a good one.
[Haley] But so many of these oils also come in the starter kit, which is really, really, really fantastic.
[Heidi] Yeah. So the starter kit for, so if you guys are interested in essential oils, obviously, Haley and I used Young Living and have for a long time for a lot of reasons, which we’ve sort of just outlined for you today, but I thought it’d be fun. We should take a picture of this and put it with this post. I think we will. Haley’s like, “What’d you got in your bag?” So, I pulled out my travel bag. I think between the two of us, what do we have? Like 27 bottles on the table or something ridiculous because we travel with them. I mean, they’re just-
[Haley] We might have a good problem going on here.
[Heidi] We use them for everything. So one of my favorite oils, and I think it’s in the starter kit, you guys should write this down, is DiGize. This was the oil that turned my husband from a skeptic into a straight up believer in essential oils department. So anytime you have a stomach ache or any kind of, I mean, I travel with this bad boy, and it smells, a lot like fennel I think.
[Haley] Yeah, it’s got a little bit of the fennel smell to it.
[Heidi] But I like it. What’s this?
[Haley] When you realize that it works, the smell all of a sudden is like, it’s your friend.
[Heidi] It’s your friend. Yeah, it’s kind of a strong smell and I actually really like it, but I’m telling you at the sign of an upset stomach, I will take a drop or two, put on my hands, but with a little carrier oil or olive oil or whatever, and rub it on my stomach. I do this with my kids.
[Haley] Yeah. Any indigestion really does help.
[Heidi] I mean, when they get stomachaches, yeah. Indigestion, anything like that. My husband now too, when he has a stomachache, he’s like, “Where’s the DiGize?”
[Heidi] So, we stopped taking medicines for it, and we started reaching for a more natural approach. That was the first one that I really liked. Then you have, and that one’s in the starter kit, and you use Raven on your kids.
[Haley] I do. I use Raven mostly when we are struggling with congestion or when the seasonal sniffles start to come around. Not only do I diffuse it, but I’m able to rub it on their chest. With my kiddos, I use fractionated coconut oil, just something simple. Then whatever’s left over in my hands, I rub it on their pillow.
[Heidi] Oh, I know. Yeah. Smells so good.
[Haley] I rub it on their clothes, and they snuggle up in their blankets. I mean, it’s really sweet. My kids actually, we all have, I think I probably have like eight diffusers in my house, which I had been doing this for a long time.
[Heidi] Which the starter kit comes with one diffuser, but you can get them on Amazon. Right? Yeah.
[Haley] Yes. I’ve been doing this for five years. So I mean, we have had time to build up to us all having our own diffusers. But yes, a lot of mine have also come from Amazon.
[Heidi] Yeah, and it’s great. So Raven, I’m just trying to think, it’s kind of this cool sort of refreshing scent. It has peppermint and eucalyptus in it, and lemon and wintergreen, and Ravintsara in it, and it just smells really good. It has kind of a cooling sensation. It’s kind of comforting. It’s one of those things you’re just like, “This is going to make me feel happy today.”
[Haley] It makes me think of grandma’s Mentholatum.
[Heidi] Oh, let me see. Haley’s passing this over to me. Yeah, you right.
[Haley] It brings back all those really sweet homey memories.
[Heidi] Yeah. It’s like grandma’s, it’s like Mentholatum with wintergreen.
[Heidi] I really smell the wintergreen in it.
[Haley] This was really key last year. Actually last year, I was introduced to Raven. I mean, y’all, I’ve been doing this for five years, and I’m still being introduced to new oils.
[Heidi] Yeah, and there’s so many. We’re learning and it’s really fun to teach our kids how to incorporate essential oils into their everyday lives. Lavender, for goodness sake. Sailor fell down the other day and scraped up her knee and the first thing she said was, “Mom, where’s the lavender?” Because they know it’s going to help.
[Heidi] They know the minute you see that you’ve burned yourself on the stove, lavender on a burn is amazing-
[Haley] With peppermint.
[Heidi] Oh, lavender and peppermint. You think that’s counterintuitive, right? You’ve treated sunburns with lavender and peppermint.
[Heidi] So have I.
[Heidi] Yeah, and I mean when you’re traveling, lavender and peppermint. You get sunburn, it’s your friend because the peppermint cools.
[Haley] It actually takes the burn away. So it does give that cooling sensation and then the lavender just soothes it.
[Heidi] Yeah. Amazing.
[Haley] So, it’s really phenomenal. We went to Florida this last summer.
[Heidi] Oh, yeah.
[Haley] I had that in my medical kit. I mean, my medical kit now consists of my oils. I have other things in there too, but I have mostly oils, but that that really did come in as a good lifesaver for us.
[Heidi] Yeah. It totally helps. Frankincense, I use it for everything. I put frankincense on my face cream and it’s helped with age spots on my skin, and it smells so good. Oh, my goodness.
[Haley] It does. Yeah.
[Heidi] Frankincense is another really, really great one for helping with anxiety and sleeplessness.
[Heidi] I’ll tell you, when I talked to my doctor about this, and I was telling her how I was using oils and I was starting to scale back on on the prescription drugs I’d been on for so long, starting to get into an exercise regimen, which helped me a ton, I’ve got an amazing husband and he helps me a ton, but I remember talking to my physician and she was just saying, “That is amazing. Keep it up.” It’s amazing how well it works, and frankincense is a huge part of that. Has kind of an earthy smell to it, but it’s amazing.
[Haley] It’s very grounding.
[Heidi] Very grounding, very healing. What else is in the starter kit? I’m just looking. What we got on the table here?
[Haley] Oh, man. So we all, most of us, go through the seasonal, where what is it?
[Heidi] The flu, the seasonal yucky?
[Haley] Well, you’ve the flu. Yeah, the yuckies, you also have allergies. So one of the things I love to do when it comes to allergy season for us, and it trickles through my family in different ways. My kiddos have it a little bit different than I have it, my husband’s allergies are a little bit different than mine, but I will tell you, we use three ingredients, and it’s the lavender, the lemon, and the peppermint, the LLP, as we like to call it.
[Heidi] Yeah, yeah. That’s what we put on our roller bottle, LLP.
[Haley] We make our little homemade roller bottles-
[Heidi] And you can diffuse it too. Yeah.
[Haley] Yeah. You can diffuse it, and it just really helps take care of that. So, that was another really, I was like, “No way.”
[Heidi] It’s amazing. Yeah.
[Haley] Now, it’s your go-to. Like you said, not only do you smell good, but you feel good and you’re not taking-
[Heidi] Are the bees attracted to you, Haley, when you wear all this stuff?
[Heidi] Oh, just checking.
[Haley] Actually, no. I haven’t had any problems. Have you had problems?
[Heidi] No, I’m just check.
[Haley] Is there something I don’t know over here?
[Heidi] No, it’s good. And the other thing-
[Haley] Actually, the insects tend to stay away from me when I am wearing this stuff, so there’s another benefit.
[Heidi] Yeah. Well, and we’ve used them for insect repellents. That gets rid of ticks when we lived in the South. So, we’re spoiled here. I mean, Haley, because your husband’s military, you’ve lived in the South. I’d never actually been to the South, never seen a tick in my life because we just typically don’t have them here in the Pacific Northwest. When I was introduced to them, it was because I found one embedded in my child’s backside.
I remember my husband and I, literally Haley, this was what we’re doing. We’re on YouTube and I’m googling, “Living bugs stuck in skin.” I’m like, “What is this?” It comes up like, “It’s a tick.” Then I started researching, and once we figured out how to get it out, which the whole event was horrifying in and of itself, we figured out how to get it out, and then I started researching essential oils and how could it help keep ticks away. Turns out, you can make your own tick repellent with essential oils and it legit works, and you smell good.
[Haley] Yeah. Yeah. The list is endless. It really is. It’s actually kind of fun once you dig in. It really is fun. It’s the new things that you learn.
[Heidi] Yeah. Yeah. We have roller bottle parties at our house kind of a lot, just for the sisters. Just like, “Hey guys, bring your oils and we’re going to come up with we’re going to make some roller bottles.” They make great Christmas gifts. Oh, my goodness.
[Haley] Yes. Yeah, they do.
[Haley] So, some of the other stuff that we have in the starter kit, y’all, the starter kit’s pretty amazing. I’m not going to lie.
[Haley] Peace and Calming is fantastic. I love to diffuse it at night with my kiddos.
[Heidi] Oh, yeah.
[Haley] It really helps them just sleep. It gives that calming sensation. It’s really fantastic. I’ll rub some on them, especially if they’re feeling like super, I don’t know, rambunctious, right before bed. You know when you’ve gone to the over tired, and they’re running around like crazy people, and you’re going, “Y’all, it’s bedtime. What are you doing?” This is like quiet time.” “Like why? I’m not tired.”
So, Peace and Calming comes in really helpful for stuff like that. My daughter has, test anxiety. She has a diagnosed anxiety disorder, was diagnosed with it at age eight, and so Peace and Calming comes from really good for her. Valor is another really, really great anxiety. Do you use that one?
[Heidi] Oh, man. I did, yeah. Well, it’s right here on the table in a roll on. I have it in a roll on, and I love Valor. It is amazing how calming it is. I remember I had the same experience. I’m not going to lie, I didn’t think Peace and Calm, it wasn’t my favorite smell when I first smelled it. I mean, I liked it, but I wasn’t like, “Oh, this is amazing.” But then I realized how helpful it was, and it comes in the starter kit, so I didn’t order it just came with my kit.
You guys, I use it every day. It’s got, what’s in that? Tangerine orange, Ylang Ylang, Patchouli, has Blue Tansy in it. It’s kind of an earthy smell, but it’s fantastic for sleep. So, I’m a light sleeper. Are you a light sleeper too?
[Haley] Now that I have children, I’m a light sleeper.
[Heidi] I think it comes with motherhood. So, I think this is kind of a good one because we’ve got young children, so sometimes we got to get up in the middle of the night and kind of go see what’s going on. So now, I just have a little bit of Peace and Calming on my feet before I go to bed at night. I know that if something wakes me up, I’m going to be able to go right back to sleep. So you can put on the bottom of your feet, you could put it on your neck before bedtime, that’s what we do with our kids is just put it, and they love it.
[Heidi] My kids will ask for it, “Mom, can I have the Peace and Calming?” Which so much better than melatonin or any of those things. I think such a great-
[Haley] Yes, which we did two years of that with our kiddos, and that was before we were introduced to the oils. So, lots of things that you can learn.
[Heidi] Yeah. I had a friend who said that she’ll put a drop on her child’s tummy or the bottom of the feet to calm a tantrum. So, she said she had a child who just really just freak out mode, and so she started just diluting it a little bit and just rubbing it on his tummy and putting it on the bottom of his feet, and that really helps too. You can diffuse it, relieving teeth grinding at night, which also tends to come from anxiety. Right? A lot of us are grinding our teeth at night. So lots of different uses, and we really, we want you guys just to be encouraged.
Really quickly Haley, because we’re going to run out of time, talking about your Thieves, girl, because Thieves is also in the starter kit. Probably one of my favorite oils.
[Heidi] We use it for, I mean-
[Haley] Yes. Immunity support.
[Heidi] Yeah. Yeah, it’s fantastic. I ended up getting Thieves Cleaner. That’s how we got rid of bleach in our homes.
[Haley] Yeah, Thieves Cleaner I don’t believe is in the starter kit, but Thieves Household cleaner, yes, is amazing.
[Heidi] You can make your own. Yeah.
[Haley] But Thieves itself, that is an all-time, it is my go-to for seasonal stuff.
[Heidi] It’s your best friend when all the neighborhood kids are coming in with snot running down their noses.
[Haley] Oh, man. I’m telling you. Last night actually, I had that back of the throat itch and you’re like, “Oh, here it comes.”
[Heidi] Oh, here we go.
[Haley] So last night, I put a drop of Thieves underneath my tongue. Just so you guys know, it’s got like a clove, cinnamon taste to it.
[Heidi] Yes, very cinnamony.
[Haley] It can be really, really strong when you first do it, but like I said, I’ve been doing this for a long time now. Honestly, I woke up this morning and I felt great. I was right back to 100%. but last night when I went to bed, I was like, “Oh goodness, here we go.”
[Heidi] Totally supports your body’s immune system, and this is a great time of year for it.
[Haley] Yes. Diffuse it. You can use it on the back of your neck, all your flex points. Then, you can put it in a capsule too. You can make Thieves tea with it. Lots of different ways that you can use it.
[Heidi] I have a recipe for that. I’ll link that to it in the show notes for you.
[Haley] Yeah, for your immunity support, but Thieves is really, really great.
[Heidi] Yeah. So really, the starter kit’s amazing, has all these oils in it.
[Haley] Yeah. You’ve got muscle support ones.
[Haley] So, PanAway is really great.
[Heidi] I told my husband when my back is hurting me, that’s one I put on my back. I’m always like, “How does it feel to sleep with the lady that smells like PanAway?” He was like, “It’s good.”
[Haley] I do love that the kit comes with a diffuser, but not only does the kit come with all of that, one of the reasons that I had signed up with Heidi was because of the team that she works with. I don’t know what else you can add about your team, but Melissa is fantastic to work with. You’ve got Dr. Edie that you’re constantly learning information from.
[Heidi] Yeah, yeah. She was the reason, actually, that I went ahead and signed up the way that I did because I wanted to learn from Dr. Edie Wadsworth, who’s been on my show a couple of times before. She’s an author with Tyndale, really incredible woman who went from just being a regular physician to turning more to natural approaches to health. So, she teaches routinely in our little Oily family on the Internet. So if we’ve got questions, she’s always doing video teaching, and she’ll bring the science behind it, which is fascinating. The science of essential oils is really fascinating.
I love the support. So if we have a question, and people are on there all the time on our Facebook page, “Hey, so-and-so’s got a bump on their finger.” They’re constantly posting pictures, “What oil is good for this?” It’s just a great community, really great camaraderie, and they want you to use your oils. So, we don’t want you to get a starter kit and then not use them.
[Haley] Not know how to do it. Yes.
[Heidi] You’ve got to get in the habit of using them. So, there’s tons of support in the Facebook group, lots of teaching. So if you guys decide that, “This is something I’m interested in,” I’m going to put the link up there for you today because we want you to benefit from it. You can go to thebusymom.com/oils and that way, you can join the Heidi St. John team. Haley’s part of that one. Obviously, you know Dr. Edie and Melissa, my assistant, is there.
So if you’re listening and you’re thinking, “This might be something I’m interested in,” I’d encourage you, there’s free shipping right now on the premium starter kits until the end of October. If you order before the end of October, we’ll send you a $10 Amazon gift card. So, who doesn’t like $10 on Amazon?
[Haley] Who doesn’t like Amazon?
[Heidi] So, I know there’s only a couple of days left in October, so this is kind of late, but this is the way the cookie crumbles.
[Heidi] So, we want you guys to be successful. We want to walk you through the learning process and learning more about essential oils. Haley’s there, she’s answering questions also.
[Heidi] So, if you’re listening to the podcast and the free shipping offer for October has already gone away, come join us any way. I think you guys will be really, really glad that you did, and then watch your inbox because many of you guys know that my assistant Melissa Crabtree, who’s worked with me for going on eight years, is going to contact you guys and welcome you into our group. Then, she’ll help you get started, because everybody needs a Melissa.
[Haley] A Melissa.
[Heidi] Everybody does, right, Haley?
[Haley] Yes. Oh, my goodness. You guys will be so thankful to have a Melissa in your life too.
[Heidi] Yeah, and it’s really fun for me to see so many of my mama friends finding the same healing that I have found from a different approach of taking care of our bodies, trying to rid our bodies of the chemicals. I mean, right now, we never really treat the root problem. We’re just going for symptoms, and we really want to encourage you to support your body in a healthy way that God intended. One of the reasons we love essential oils is because they do just that.
[Haley] Yeah, body and home.
[Heidi] It’s plants, for goodness sake. Yeah, that’s exactly right. So Haley, it’s so fun to have you here.
[Haley] Yeah, that was fun. Thanks guys. Thanks for letting me come on with my sister.
[Heidi] It’s really fun. Yeah, we’ll have to do it again and talk about all the things.
[Haley] All the things, that’ll be for another one.
[Heidi] All the things, all the things. If you guys want more information on essential oils, I will link that. I’ve written a bunch of articles on this. I’ll link back to some of my favorite explanations of how the oils work and why they work. If you’re going, “Man, this is awesome. I want to get a starter kit with all those oils in it,” your starter kit includes your wholesale membership, which means you’re going to get 24% off of all the products, and then there’s no monthly order. You don’t have to sell them. This isn’t about that. This is about getting into it and changing your family. It really is life changing.
So, thebusymom.com/oils. If you’ve got any questions you can shoot us your questions over at Mailbox Monday, and then we will get back to you just as soon as we can. So thanks, Haley. I love you girl.
[Haley] I love you too, sis.
[Heidi] All right, you guys. Hope you have a great day. Thanks for listening, and I’ll see you back here on Wednesday.
