Elizabeth has been featured on many major media outlets, such as Fox & Friends, The New York Times, The Blaze and Christian Broadcasting Network, as she has become a thought leader on topics of importance to families. Hi friends, this is Heidi St. John. Welcome to the podcast. Today is Wednesday, February the 12th, and today I’m going to air part two of my interview with my friend Elizabeth Johnston. We’re going to talk about some tough subjects today and hopefully you guys are going to leave encouraged and empowered that God is alive and at work in the culture today and that you have a voice that God can use to make a difference in the lives of people around you. Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.
So thanks for tuning in today. We’re going to go ahead and join this conversation midway through. This was recorded on Monday, and we’re going to air part two of my conversation with Elizabeth Johnston right now.
Father, wake us up. Oh, wake up your people. You know, I’ve been talking about comprehensive sex education, screaming and yelling for quite a while here at the podcast, and I know you have been to, and I’m continuing to get emails from parents who say, “Well, that’s not happening in my neighborhood.” And I want to just say, yes, but okay. Let’s pretend for a minute that it’s not. It’s coming. So even if it’s not in your school right now, it’s absolutely coming.
Why don’t you care about the kids in Kentucky and the kids in Washington state and the kids in California, for goodness sake, who are being inundated with lies and inundated with sexually explicit pornographic images from the time they are five years old? Why do we not stand in the gap for those children? I believe if God’s people stood up all over the nation, they would have to stop what they’re doing. They would have to stop.
[Elizabeth] We have found the pornographic sex education, gender bending sex ed in very, very conservative school districts in the Bible belt. In Indiana we caught schools teaching kids how to take the bus route to the local abortion clinic, basically, to get their abortions without their parents knowing about it. We caught that in Bible belt, Indiana. People, parents have their heads in the sand, unfortunately, and you talk about the graphic images that people are complaining about. We obviously are very careful. We try to be very careful, block out, blur out things that are inappropriate, and yet we’ve done a lot to expose what’s really going on in the schools through sex ed sit out.
But same thing with abortion, I don’t have a problem with showing a graphic picture of the babies and what’s actually happening to them. Do you realize in the Holocaust that it was the images, it was the actual images of the suffering people, the suffering Jews in the concentration camps that got Americans off of their butts and got them to act and ultimately go to war on behalf of these persecuted and tortured people? So, a picture is powerful, and sometimes we have to resort to exposing what’s really taking place because otherwise good people don’t believe that this kind of evil can actually happen.
[Heidi] Yeah, that’s right. What do you say to the person who’s listening to this who says, “Oh, the church shouldn’t get involved in politics. Oh, the church, that separation of church and state, our job is to be salt and light. We’re supposed to be loving people.” What do you say to those people who are listening to this and saying, “I don’t understand”?
[Elizabeth] We live in a Republic. We don’t live in a monarchy, and if you’re going to rule in our nation, you’re going to, for all intents and purposes, be involved in politics. Right? And so why does the Scripture say that when the wicked rule, the people mourn and groan, but when the righteous rule, the people rejoice. What is this clearly teaching us? Who does God want to rule? He wants the righteous to rule. We know that’s what’s best for society. And so that means that the righteous need to be running for office and the righteous need to be making a difference. I shouldn’t have to give a thesis for why parents should be at the City Council. If a 200 pound man thinks he can access the shower room of your daughter, the locker room of your daughter? I shouldn’t have to write a thesis on why we should be at the board of education meeting when your tax dollars are going to teach kids how to sodomize one another in the public schools.
Come on guys, get off your Pharisaical high horse and wake up to what’s going on around you and get involved and help love children. Just love your neighbor. These are our neighbors. I don’t have any skin in the game as far as my kids in the public schools, and I led a global movement called sex ed sit out to get parents off of their La-Z-Boy and engaged in this fight to stop pornographic sex ed in their schools, and I don’t have any kids in the public schools. It’s just about loving your neighbor. I care for my neighbor whose kids are stuck in these schools, and they’re being completely brainwashed by Planned Parenthood and Human Rights Campaign who should have absolutely no access to them inside the public schools.
[Heidi] Yeah, that’s right. And I heard someone just a couple of weeks ago say, “You know, Heidi, why are you going to the school board meetings?” Just like you, Elizabeth, my kids are not in the public schools. I don’t have any skin in the game. And my answer was simple because these are tomorrow’s judges and tomorrow’s leaders and tomorrow’s doctors and tomorrow’s mothers. And they’re going to come out of this upside down system so messed up and so backward and so broken that we will have a devastated culture. It will be very hard to recover, and that should matter to us. It should matter to us, and I am just praying, Lord, wake up your church. Wake up your people, get them involved. We need to be… Someone said to me the other day, “Why do you care about…” Because I said, you guys, somebody should, Christians should be running for parks and recreation positions when they come available in your city.
And someone said, “Well that doesn’t matter.” Well it matters absolutely here in Vancouver, Washington because the parks and rec board invited a drag queen to our city family festival, and so we ended up with a drag queen, literally doing the most unspeakable things from the stage in the town square, in front of little children, three year old children. And I’m like, where are the Christians? Where are the men and women of valor that claimed the name of Jesus? And God calls us into the culture. You’ve written a book about this, and it’s called Not On My Watch. I was very honored to be in on that process with you and to endorse it. What would motivate you, Elizabeth Johnston, mother of 10 who, I’m sure your Crock-Pot is working over time like mine. People often think, Oh, you know these women they must have all this time on their hands. You and I, we don’t have nannies. We’re doing the thing. What would motivate you to write a book to encourage other parents to get off the bench and onto the battlefield?
[Elizabeth] I’ve seen how it works. When I learned that Teen Vogue magazine was teaching kids how to sodomize one another and I asked my husband to build me a little bonfire, ran out in the backyard, filmed a two minute video, didn’t know if anybody would watch it. The world was outraged. I mean this thing went global. It was viewed 15 million times, and we started the operation pull teen Vogue, and I’m a mom with like no funding, no organization. Parents started asking and demanding that stores pull Teen Vogue from their shelves. I was ruthlessly mocked, Heidi. I was called a Nazi book burner and called a lot of other things I could never say on your Christian podcast, and was really cyber bullied over burning that magazine as you can imagine. And five months later a publication, a powerful publication that had been in print ever since I was a little girl printed its last print edition.
We destroyed Teen Vogue and their reputation. That was one person, and I just began to do these little things where I would respond to evil when I saw it and when it reared his head, I just responded as I thought any Christian mom should respond. Righteous anger Rose up in me, and I just responded in a way that I thought would please the Lord. And when I would take these stands, it just would send these little shockwaves throughout the country and sometimes the world. And I realized people need to learn more about what my heart is and why, what motivates me and that Jesus Christ is my motivation and He gives me the courage to be bullied and put my family at risk to do these things. It’s going to take that kind of courage, Heidi, for us to win our nation back and to keep our kids from living in a society where the Bible is not hate speech and we’re not ruled by our enemies.
If we’re going to fight this, if we’re going to win this battle, it’s going to take the kind of courage that puts you at risk. And so I told those stories in my book, in Not On My Watch, and it’s just full of encouraging stories that are really inspiring. I get the best feedback from people who read the book, and I did the Audible myself. And so you can also listen to it if your the kind of person likes to get on the treadmill and listen to a book or listen to it while you’re driving, you can also get it on Audible.
[Heidi] There’s a couple of things you said, and I’m going to link back to those of you who are trying to write this down. I will link back to Elizabeth’s book in the show notes today so y’all can go out and buy it. I’ve been privileged to read it, privileged to endorse it. You’re going to be blessed and encouraged, and it’s going to fire you up. So if you’re ready to get fired up, this is a great book for you. I wrote down a couple of things that you were saying. One of the things I wrote down is you said, “We destroyed Teen Vogue.” And the first thing that went into my mind was, but not before they destroyed the minds of innocent children everywhere and preventing them from continuing to destroy the innocence and the minds of our youth. And that is really what’s at stake.
And you mentioned the cyberbullies. You and I have been involved now because you’re coming to speak for me. We’re having a lot of fun with cyberbullies right now. And we’ve announced a lot of locations for faith that speaks really going out kind of onto a sort of a spiritual precipice in many ways and saying we’re going to lift high the name of Jesus because our faith should never be a private faith. It is a public faith that is something that the Bible says in the Psalms, let the redeemed of the Lord say so. We are called to say so, and so we stepped out in faith, and I think we got six or seven events on the calendar, and one of those events was coming up in, I think, I believe, in Northern Maryland.
And we were really not very far after we announced it, some cyberbullies, I mean these are grown men in women’s underwear sitting in their mom’s basement making noise, making noise.
[Elizabeth] That’s it.
[Heidi] And they went to a church, they went to the Facebook page of the church that we were supposed to go to, and they started leaving negative reviews. You know, Heidi st John’s bringing that horrible, awful Elizabeth Johnston in with her, and they’re going to bring a message of hate. No, we’re not bringing the message of hate. We’re bringing a message of healing.
[Heidi] And it didn’t take long. What, five negative reviews by what we think are the same three people with different Facebook accounts, and the church canceled the event. And I was just, I mean, I was blindsided by that. I thought really? They didn’t call me. They didn’t call you. I think people need to understand that if you’re going to speak with truth right now, if you’re going to stand up for truth and righteousness in the culture, you are going to be persecuted. You are going to be targeted.
But the Lord says over and over again, don’t fear I am with you. Don’t be dismayed. I am your God. And this was the message that we are trying to bring to that church. You guys, the Lord said, I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you. And then he goes on in Isaiah 41 and says “all those who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced. Those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all for I am the Lord your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear, I will help you”. And you saw this firsthand. Were you surprised that the church canceled us?
[Elizabeth] If you can’t handle five bad reviews, I’m just going to say that I don’t understand how if a Muslim had a gun to your head and told you to deny Christ, I don’t believe you’d be able to stand in that kind of adversity. Obviously five reviews is not a big deal compared to losing your life. How are you going to choose Christ when your life is on the line if you can’t handle five negative reviews of people calling you a racist, homophobic, xenophobic, whatever, phobic person? It’s just words. Okay? It’s just words. That’s all it is. This is something that, again, I feel called to inspire people to be able to handle the kind of bullying, the bully tactics that the left uses. They’re very good at it, and they have learned the types of Christians that they can get away with it, and that they can be successful.
And so shame on any church that would really proliferate that problem by allowing themselves to be bullied into silence. That’s exactly what happened. None of these other churches are going to cave. They’re going to hold strong, and they’re going to do the right thing. This church, I’m sad for them. I’m sad for them that they have this kind of stain on them. But unfortunately I think there are far too many people who named the name of Christ, who are in a relationship with Christ for what they can get out of him and not really picking up a cross and following him. There is a cross to carry if you’re going to be a Christian. And more so and more so in this culture that we’re living in. And so, let’s press in and count the cost and carry that cross because our beautiful savior is such an amazing example to all of us. His example inspires me every day to be able to take a little bit of spit on the face, a little bit of bullying, very small amount of suffering compared to what he endured for you and me sinners who did not deserve that kind of love. He inspires me every day.
[Heidi] And it really is, that is the motivation. That is what’s behind it, and you and I are going to be on the road this year together quite a bit with our friend Kathy Barnett, who also has an amazing story.
[Elizabeth] It’s going to be awesome.
[Heidi] Conceived in rape. Oh my goodness. Just these powerful stories, which I really think that’s what the enemy’s warring against, right?
[Elizabeth] Oh, yes.
[Heidi] We don’t want the truth out there. We want you guys to be captive to lies, and so you’re going to be joining me out on the road. It’s going to be an amazing, amazing opportunity. For everyone who’s listening, we hope that you guys will be inspired and will want to come out and hear a message. We’re going to have awesome worship and awesome time in the word of God. We’re going to equip you to be able to stand in the culture today, unashamed, and allow your faith to permeate the culture as God intended for it to do and to change the lives of the people who are around you.
So the next place that we will be, actually the first place for the whole season is coming up in Lakeland, Florida at Ardella Baptist church, and we’re very excited to be there. That’s going to start at 7:00 PM on the 21st of February and all day long on the 22nd, and we’re going to do a live Q and. A, which I cannot wait. I’m thinking to myself, I’ve been doing these for eight years, and I was just telling Elizabeth the other day, I’m like, Oh my goodness, like Kathy Barnett, Heidi St. John, and Elizabeth Johnson doing a live Q and A in the audience that is worth the price of admission right there.
[Elizabeth] It’s going to be so fun. I can’t wait to meet everybody, and of course, we’ll be able to assign books and talk with everyone and hopefully pray with people. It’s going to be a great time.
[Heidi] It’s going to be wonderful. After that, just a couple of weeks after that we’ll be in Los Angeles at Godspeed Calvary Chapel, and those guys are already off the bench and onto the battlefield. So very excited just to come and encourage you all to just who the Lord is. Let’s not forget we are sons and daughters of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, heir to the throne of Christ. It’s a pretty amazing, powerful message that we are going to be bringing to faith that speaks. So we’re excited about that. Elizabeth Johnston, my soul sister friend, I love you so much, and I’m so thankful for your strong defense of the Bible and the gospel and the culture and also your love for people. And I want to just, I sort of like to end on that note with you because I have seen you ministering to people around the nation. I’ve been privileged to know you for a long time.
I love your heart. I love the way you listen for the Holy Spirit. And I love your love for people because if we didn’t love people, we wouldn’t be doing this. We would just be staying home and come up with new crockpot recipes because between us, we have 17 kids. It’s no joke, and I do think that the more we can encourage each other and say, don’t give up God’s in there then the Lord gives us the courage and the bandwidth to get out and do these things. And I’m just so thankful for your voice and your passion.
[Elizabeth] Thank you, sister. It’s going to be an amazing year. All of the listeners, please find one of these conferences that is anywhere near you and load up in a van with your friends, and let’s have a great time of fellowship and ministry and worship and get refreshed and encouraged around one another. We need encouragement in 2020, and we need the Lord to really speak to us and give us clear vision this year. And so this is a powerful year for this to be happening.
[Heidi] I agree. I agree. For more information on Elizabeth Johnston, I will link back to her and to her book, Not On My Watch, in the show notes today. That’s available anywhere books are sold, and obviously I will link back to that. Also, we will link back to registration for faith that speaks. The first one’s coming right up in just about a week and a half at Ardella Baptist Church in Lakeland, Florida. You are not going to want to miss it. Elizabeth, my friend, I love you so much. Thank you so much for coming on the show.
[Elizabeth] Love you Heidi.
[Heidi] All right you guys, thank you so much for tuning in today. For more information, please visit me online at heidistjohn.com forward slash podcast. Have a great day everybody, and I’ll see you back here in just a couple of days.
