Resist. It’s the battle-cry of a generation of angry Americans—but according to the Bible, our “resistance” should be focused in one place: the adversary of our souls. Satan is playing for keeps, but God promises victory as we take our thoughts captive to Christ! Listen today as I shed light on a very important battle and we look back to the only source of true victory: Jesus.

Happy New Year everybody! This is Heidi St. John, welcome to the first episode for the New Year 2019, of the Heidi St. John podcast.
Today is Wednesday, January 2nd and we’re going to continue with part three of a three part series – A Journey Toward Truth.
You want to know how to win the battle for your mind? Stick around, I think you’re going to be encouraged.
So, hope you guys had a fantastic New Year’s Day! We are doing some really fun things in my neck of the woods here in Vancouver, Washington. My husband and I opened the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center in October of 2017, so we just celebrated basically our first year anniversary! And what we’re trying to do is give families in this area an alternative to what’s happening around them. So in other words, I’ve noticed a huge shift in the homeschool movement since my husband and I started homeschooling over 20 years ago. It’s a long story, I should probably talk about homeschooling – maybe we’ll do that on Friday. But I never planned on homeschooling.
I’ll just say that. I never planned on homeschooling. Everybody that I knew that was homeschooling I thought it was weird. I didn’t have the outfit which everyone knows what the outfit is. But we did have something that this generation of new homeschoolers doesn’t have and that is – we had an incentive, something we were running towards. I started seeing the benefits of homeschooling because I started meeting some homeschooled kids, and then as our life got a little bit crazier my husband I realized hey this would actually just fit our life better. If we could homeschool our kids then we could travel with them, they could be more involved in our ministry, blah blah blah. So we ended up homeschooling all seven of our children!
But this generation of homeschoolers is not like my generation in that I don’t believe that they’re running to something like we were. I think they’re running largely from something. And so we have attempted to give them something to run to here at the Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center. It is a ministry of Firmly Planted Family, which is the nonprofit organization my husband I founded nearly 15 years ago. And I’d love for you guys to see what’s happening because what we would love to see happen is for there to be homeschool resource centers popping up all around the United States, and indeed over into Europe where I know homeschooling is growing at a phenomenal pace right now.
So check it out. You guys can find is it Firmly Planted Family or you can go to FPHRC.org, that stands for Firmly Planted Homeschool Resource Center, and just see what we’re doing because we are excited to see what God will do with the resource center in 2019. And hopefully, it will grow beyond that.
All right. We have been talking a little bit about the search for truth, the journey toward truth. Remember, we started out last Friday saying that every single one of us is on a pilgrimage, we’re on a journey, we’re going home – praise God! This world is not our home – we’re going home. And in the middle of our journey we’ve been called as believers to point people to Jesus. You know we talked with Ann Dunagan several weeks ago – about the death of John Chau, the missionary who is originally from Vancouver, Washington – where I am now from.
I told you before – I’ve been amazed at the backlash that John Chau got for sharing the gospel with the unreached Sentinelese people somewhere off the Indian coast. Not surprised by the backlash from unbelievers, but definitely surprised by the backlash from believers – from people who should be anxious to see unreached people groups know the Lord. You guys, the only hope that we have in this world is Jesus. Someone asked me several years ago, we were talking about sharing the gospel which is another thing I want to talk about a little bit today – but a woman came up to me and she said:
You know, Heidi, so let’s say I believe in this and in God. let’s say I decide to give my heart to God. What do I get?
I looked at her and I said:
You get Jesus! You get eternal life, you get the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, you get discernment, you get peace that the Bible says passes understanding, you get Jesus – the Prince of peace.
You guys, He IS the reward. Jesus is the reward. And I think, somehow, we’ve forgotten that. And in our journey on this earth toward heaven – which is where we’re going – the enemy’s thrown all kinds of bombs out in the way trying to derail us so that we forget that that’s what we’re doing here. We shouldn’t be living for here. This world is not our home, we’re just passing through. We should be living for eternity which is what John Chau is doing. He understood what was at stake. He understood the power of truth and he wanted the people that had never heard it on that remote island to hear how loved they were, to hear that God loves them.
It starts by acknowledging that we have a God, that we serve the living God. Who sent His son, Jesus. And listen you guys, we we serve Him first because He reveals himself to us, right? And we recognize – oh my word I’m I’m lost in my own sin. We come to the Lord, we accept, and by faith – right? It’s not blind faith, but it’s faith. And then we begin our journey as believers. And having that that passion for the Gospel inside of us should change the way we live our lives. It should motivate us to tell the truth. It’s one of the things that we’ve been talking about for the last several days here at the podcast – is this idea of there actually being truth.
So remember, we started off by saying that if you want to win the battle for your mind – you set your heart on pilgrimage to Jerusalem. You set your heart, you set your mind rather, on Pilgrim insights from Psalm 84:5, and then you resist the devil, right? We talked about that 1 Peter 5: your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. resist him! How do you resist him?
I live just outside of Portland and we see bumper stickers all the time: resist resist resist. And I have to resist saying things to people like that. That’s what I do whenever I see those bumper stickers, i’m like – Heidi, just resist. Resist the flesh right now. You can still be godly, you still have time.
We’re told to resist the devil. Resist the devil. Stand strong, stand firm, be steadfast. Because we recognize that we have an adversary and the Bible says He is the father of lies. And so we recognize we have an adversary – he’s the father of lies. And we recognize that the battle for our heart is won or lost in our mind. That’s where it begins. The battlefield in this generation is happening in our mind.
We have been deceived on an epic scale. How do we win the battle for a mind? We turn our attention back to the Bible. We go back to God’s word. The Bible says it is the source of everything that we need. Everything that we need is contained in it. Everything we need for life and godliness. Go back to the Bible. We declare with our mouth what we know is true, and we declare where our faith rests. Remember that Jehoshaphat did that in 2 Chronicles 20. He realized – oh my goodness I’m in trouble – so he praised the Lord, that’s the first thing he did. Oh Lord the God of our fathers power and might are in your hand. We are powerless before this great multitude. We don’t know what to do but you do. Our eyes are on you, our faith rests in you.
Declare out loud where your faith rests. My faith rests in God. Some might trust in chariots, some might trust in horses, but we don’t – we trust in the name of the Lord. Right? Then we learned to think up to the level of God’s Word, and then finally we put on Christ — And we allow Him to control our thinking. Remember, we are the boss of our thoughts. That’s what we’re telling our children – I know that you wanted to do that but you’re the boss of you, but you could choose to obey.
Well, we get to choose what we think about. We get to choose which thoughts we accept and which thoughts we reject. And you can win the battle for your mind.
Here’s the next thing I want you to learn to do. When you hear a lie — speak truth! I gonna say it again, when you hear a lie – speak truth speak. With your mouth, speak it. With the platform that God gives you – speak it unashamedly – boldly, speak the truth. We’re always asking ourselves – or we should be as believers — What does God’s word say? God’s Word is the plumb line. It’s what helps us decipher all the junk in the culture – right?
We go back to the Bible. What does the Bible say? Listen to what 2 Corinthians 10 this is the apostle Paul in chapter 10:3-5.
3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.
You see the battle is spiritual and so is the journey that we’re on, and Paul went on to say –
4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.
Anybody have a stronghold in their life right now?
Anybody struggling with an addiction, alcohol, pornography? Maybe your addiction is just to be in control all the time. Moment of silence.
So the Bible says – we demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. And we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. How do we do that? We take every thought captive. It’s a choice that we make. We go back to saying – I am the boss of my thoughts, I am the boss of my thoughts – and put on Christ, and control my thinking. Whatever is good, whatever is right, whatever is lovely, whatever is a good repute – I’m going to think about those things.
Bye bye Netflix. Goodbye thing that I’m listening to or watching that I know that God does not like – Not for you. Mm hmm. It’s a spiritual battle. You think for one second that the enemy is just going to let you lollygagging through your life without tempting you? Without trying to get you to not believe the things that you know in your heart are true because you’ve read them in the word of God?
No. I’ve said many many times on the podcast, and I’m going to say it again – God is not silent on the issues this generation is facing, on the lies that we’re believing. The battle that we are facing right now is a battle for truth. Truth is in the cross-hairs and when I wrote Becoming MomStrong – I talked about this. There’s a chapter in the book called Sex Lies and Motherhood and I was talking about how important it is for mothers in the culture right now to regain the narrative – that we were made in the image of God. That is one of the reasons why abortion is so egregious to the Father, and if it breaks the heart of God. Men and women, it should break our hearts too.
God is not silent on the issue of gender identity. In Mark 10:6 we read that God created us male and female – in His image. In Romans 1 and 2 we are given the creator’s clear instruction regarding human sexuality. Clear instruction. He wasn’t ambiguous, aren’t you glad? I think God knew you’ve got to be very very direct – because we are prone to wander.
My parents used to have a little, like a hobby horse, farm out in Boring, Oregon. One of my favorite places in the whole world is Boring, Oregon. And we had goats, and there were sheep out there. Our neighbors had sheep. And I learned a lot about sheep. You know to learn about sheep? They’re dumb. They really are. They’re really dumb. You know how dogs can do tricks? Sheep can’t do that :). They’ll walk out in front of a car, they’ll walk off a cliff. It’s crazy.
There’s a reason that God calls us sheep. All you like sheep have gone astray (Isaiah 53:6). So God knowing how prone we were to being like sheep: a.k.a. stupid.
– Can I say that? Nobody get mad. 🙂 –
It’s true! He gave us very clear instructions. And what’s happening right now in the church – I see this over and over again – is that we’re watering down the message of the Bible in order to make it palatable to the culture. But we’re missing the point completely! Just walk it in disobedience. And then we don’t walk in victory and we wonder why. Romans 1 and 2, God has given us very clear instructions.
In Genesis 1 we read the story of creation. All of the answers to the questions that we are asking – the big questions that we are asking – are addressed in God’s Word. You what to know what marriage is for? – read Genesis 2. He tells us about the purpose of marriage. Marriage was created by, and instituted by, God. And the government may redefine it but God never will. I assure you. Why Heidi, how can you say that? Because I believe the word of God.
A friend of mine – I went to a Christian high school – and had a friend of mine message me a long time ago on on social media because I was talking about gay marriage. And I understand that there are people who don’t know the Lord and believe that gay marriage is their right, but I don’t understand God’s people doing that.
I don’t understand God’s people laying aside God’s clear instruction on this issue – and she said:
I cannot believe that you still hold to that antiquated Bible. You are so backward that you think that marriage is between a man and woman.
I got to thinking about it and I was like – Yeah I actually believe weirder things than that. I believe that a snake spoke to a woman in the garden!
You see, my belief is founded in the Word of God, which by faith, I accept to be God’s Word to me. It’s the plumb line for my life. It’s how I know what’s right and wrong and I know that without that compass – I’d be making a lot of mistakes.
In Proverbs 22 the Bible teaches us almost everything we need to know about parenting. And this is what it is — Parents, your kids are your responsibility. From the moment they get up to the moment they go to bed, and every time in between – they are your responsibility. The education of your children – your responsibility.
How do we know this? Because God’s Word teaches it in 1 Corinthians 7. The Apostle Paul spoke about the issue of singleness. You know what he said? he said it’s good. It’s not bad. It’s good. If you can be single – Paul said do it.
Ephesians 5, we learn what God says about alcohol. You know He said? – stop getting drunk, and if you can’t have a good witness – quit drinking altogether. Psalm 127, we know how God feels about children. He said they are a gift. They’re a gift. Abortion would hurt the heart of our Creator God. John 10 we learn about eternity.
So we’ve learned about creation, male and female, the purpose of marriage, parents responsibility, what God thinks about our singleness. How he feels about children. How he feels about freedoms that we have in our life. And the question of eternity, right? — the question on everybody’s mind when they get ready to die — what’s next?
The Bible teaches us.
In John 10:28 -29 He said I came to give you eternal life
So let me ask you, in the last couple of minutes that I have – a very simple question as you head into this New Year. What are you facing that you have been using emotional reasoning to justify? We need to stop making emotional arguments for spiritual problems. The problems that we’re having in the world today are spiritual in nature, and we know that even though we live in the world – we don’t wage wars, the world does. The weapons that we fight with are not the weapons of this world. Our primary weapons are prayer and praise. We get off the bench and onto the battlefield for the sake of the Gospel – armed with prayer and praise, and knowing that the Lord of heaven’s armies fights for us and by us, and will never leave us or forsake us.
And as we enter into 2019 – and you know this is the time we were all making New Year resolutions… I’m actually not much of a resolution girl, I’m more of a: Father, Holy Spirit – tell me what I need to do.
So about a month and a half ago I joined a gym. I know… I joined a gym. I’m trying to get all my all my mama friends to come with me – because I realized I am not going to be very much fun for my grand-kids. If I don’t get get back on the wagon.
That still small voice of the Holy Spirit, He wants to have a relationship with you. And sometimes, I think we use emotional reasoning to justify things that we do because we know deep down in our heart what God would have us do. So as we get into this New Year. Let’s start there – let’s start there, by asking the Lord: Father, show us. In fact, let’s just do that right now. Let me close in prayer.
Father, I thank you, that are able to help us discern the truth. Father, I pray that you give us boldness, that you’d fill us with Your Spirit, that we would never have to worry about what it is You want us to do – because we would be open to hearing your voice and immersed in Your Word. Father, I pray for us as we enter this New Year, Father, for 2019 – help us Lord, to get off the bench and onto the battlefield. Help us to be both strong and wise for our children. Help us to be examples that they can look up to, men and women who rightly divide your Word and can defend it.
We pray against the lies the enemy in the culture right now, Father. Particularly this lie of transgenderism. Lord, I pray that the eyes of educators would be opened and that Christians who are making foolish decisions in the name of a misguided mercy – Father, that they would come back to the truth of Your Word and do what You say to do. And Father, we declare – though some may trust in horses and chariots, and some may trust in political correctness, and some may trust in politics, and some might trust in homeschooling – we don’t. Lord, we trust in Your name and it is in Your name that we pray. Committing this year to you, Lord we love you, thank you for what you’ve done for us. Help us to live in such a way that everyone who sees us knows whose we are. In Jesus name, Amen.
