A listener writes, “My child’s school is teaching that boys and girls are interchangeable—and that anyone who disagrees with this is a bigot. Should we insist on teaching our son otherwise and risk having our kids ostracized?” Join me to as I answer this question from the Word of God. Real truth is never subjective, it is defined by God Himself.

TRANSCRIBED PODCAST BELOW
Hey everybody, this is Heidi St. John – welcome to the podcast! Today is Friday, December 28.
We are coming to the end of 2018. And I thought would be appropriate to end the year out talking about why truth matters.
Stick around for Part 1 of a 3 part series on truth, I think you’re going to be encouraged.
All right. So we are heading around the corner and down the ban to a brand new year. I want to say thank you for those of you who’ve been listening to this podcast with me for quite a while now. If you get an opportunity to leave a review for this podcast I would love it if you would do that. We read all of the reviews that you guys write for us over at iTunes, and I thought it’d be fun to read one for you. This last one was left on the 16th of December, and this woman said:
I love this podcast. Heidi is clearly a student of the Word of God. She brings biblical truth that is relevant for me as I raise my kiddos in this postmodern world when I’m having trouble getting just a few minutes alone for study and prayer. I often listen to the podcast and feeling refreshed and motivated. I appreciate her keeping up with the culture as well. I often feel defeated in this area but she helps remind me of biblical truths that keep me motivated.
Thank you. Thank you so much for that review. We read all of your reviews over at iTunes and you can leave them there. Simply click on the gear shift and you can rate it with a star rating, and then write a review as well.
So we want to say thank you for that. It really does help. Let other people know that this is a podcast that’s worth listening to.
All right, I am going to be tackling a question that I get all the time here at the podcast. A listener wrote in recently – and she was frustrated like a lot of you are. And she wrote:
Dear Heidi, my child’s school is teaching that boys and girls are interchangeable. And then anyone who disagrees with this is a bigot. Should we insist on teaching our children otherwise and risk having our kids ostracized?
So this is…this kind of goes to the heart of truth and why we want to teach our children the truth. We want to teach them the truth about who God is. We want to teach them truth about who they are. Because listen- if you don’t teach your children the truth, Mom and Dad, the world is gonna lie to them.
I’m gonna say that again – if you don’t teach your children the truth the world is going to lie to them.
I was taken aback by a headline in The Telegraph, which is a newspaper over in the UK, and the headline read this: Boys can have periods too
Children are gonna be taught this in the latest victory for transgender campaigners over in the UK. They’re teaching your children that boys can have periods. Well, I was…I’m stunned by this development because we are actually, legitimately – sticking our heads in the sand and pretending that there is no such thing as truth. This is what happens when we decide that truth is subjective. So when I say that my truth is my truth, and your truth is your truth, and truth is subjective – then we wind up here.
So this new advice, according to this article, follows a council report which said
“trans boys, and men, and nonbinary people may have periods.”
“menstruation must be inclusive of all genders.”
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. First of all, trans boys and men are still girls and women! And there is no such thing as a nonbinary person. We come into this world male or female. God said: I created them male and female, for this reason
24 a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
So in answer to your question – absolutely! Teach your children the truth! If you don’t teach them the truth, the world is going to lie to them. And can I just encourage you right now you guys — you were born for this! Get off the bench, get onto the battlefield.
The battle that is being waged in the culture right now is a war for truth. It’s a war for Truth. Did you read the headline the other day? Maybe you guys missed it – about the transgender man that almost won the Miss Universe pageant.
So get this, you guys. A male Miss Universe contestant is applauded by the same people who’ve been complaining to us about cultural appropriation, right? You guys know what cultural appropriation is — it’s when you take something that doesn’t belong to you. And if a man masquerading around as a woman and actually stealing a real woman spot in the Miss Universe pageant isn’t appropriation – I don’t know what is! But that doesn’t seem to matter to the progressive left. Because they’re not interested in a real appropriation, right? We’re not interested in that anymore because we have a cultural battle to fight.
Listen you guys — women own womanhood. Only a woman has the right to be called a woman because only a woman can be a woman. And I love what Matt Walsh said he said:
A drag queen makes a mockery of womanhood and himself, but he doesn’t really appropriate womanhood because he isn’t claiming to be a woman. He’s just dressing like a grotesquely exaggerated version of one. But the man in the beauty pageant, and the men in women’s restrooms, and on and on and on – do not just demand the right to participate in female fashion or female hobbies – they demand the right to be women. And wherever they are given that right, women are deprived what is rightfully theirs.
And so this comes back to it — and every time I talk about this on the Internet, every time I say anything on my Instagram page, or on my blog — I am blasted by people for being a bigot and a hater. But I’m telling you what – as long as God gives me breath I will speak truth. We have to speak the truth. The Bible teaches us that there is such a thing as truth.
And this journey that we are on, by the way, and it is a journey — I just spoke at a women’s event in Boston a couple of months ago. We had a wonderful time. The theme there was a pilgrimage. And the call to a called a pilgrimage is a journey, that what we’re on is a journey toward truth. So the call of the Christian should be to journey toward truth. We want to journey toward truth. Psalm 84:5 says:
What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord,
who have set their minds on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
In other words, we’re going to set our minds on the destination. The destination isn’t here. The destination is heaven. We’re just passing through. I’ve been loving listening to my friend Phil Hopper over the Abundant Life Church, where I will be speaking this coming Mother’s Day — I cannot wait. Talking about, in his new sermon series – DUE DATE! About – just like Jesus had a due date to come in the form of a man so that he could live a sinless life, and die on the cross in a substitution for our own sin, and paid our price — there is a due date on his second coming. He is coming again and we need to we need to be ready. We want to be ready for Him.
In 1 Peter 5, we are warned about an adversary, that we have. He is a very real adversary. You don’t believe me? – Look and see what’s happening in the culture right now. We are so messed up that we can’t even say that men are men and women are women. The Bible says:
Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
9 Resist him, standing firm in your faith, because you know that your brothers and sisters throughout the world are undergoing the same kinds of sufferings. 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.
1 Peter 5:8-10
That is the promise of the Word of God to you as you stand steadfast. So in answer to your question, sweet mom, — should you tell your child to stand for what is right.? Absolutely!
Does that mean that suffering is going to come? Probably. Probably. Jesus said in this world you will have trouble. But guess what else He said?
take heart! I have overcome the world.
And I want to remind you today that the battle that’s being waged in the culture right now – it goes beyond the veneer, right? On the outside what we see is the struggle to even say that men are men and women are women. This idea that that people are born nonbinary – what a ridiculous lie.
I’m shocked the church isn’t being more forthright about it, but I guess we can’t be forthright about it because we’re having sin issues in our own lives. We don’t want to call anybody out for anything because we’re afraid they’re going to turn around and look at us.
You’ve got to live a life that speaks of your faith that speaks for the One who gave His life for you. You see the battle that’s being fought right now for your heart is won or lost in your mind. It’s in your mind. And even though we’ve been struggling with this more recently – right this idea of transgenderism, and gender identity, and all the lies that you see in the culture. I find it so fascinating in a culture that once fought so desperately for women’s rights, now would say – well if you’re a man and you want to be a woman that’s fine too. It just shows you the level of madness that we have descended into and the world may have changed a lot, and even beyond all recognition in the last hundred years – but it shouldn’t surprise us. Our fallen nature is taking us down this road, our temptations right now are not really any different than the temptations of our ancestors. It’s just being played out in a different way.
The enemy’s very familiar with human beings, you guys. Just different generation requires a different tactic and apparently, we are so blind now that he’s not having to do much work at all. We have the same enemy who’s telling us variations of the same old lies since he told Adam and Eve in the garden – Oh you won’t surely die – and they were tricked into eating the forbidden fruit.
Right? truth versus lies.
I want to encourage you to go back to the Bible. Back to the Bible. Resist the enemy. How do you resist him? — You know the word of God and you declare that truth out loud with a purpose. The next time you see yourself struggling with a lie declare the truth of the word of God out loud.
Say what you know to be true. Go back to the Bible. God’s Word isn’t silent on the issues that we’re facing. So declare what you know is true. There’s a couple ways that we can win the battle for our mind.
The first thing you do is you use scripture. This is what Jesus did, right? When he was being tempted He used Scripture. He used the word of God against the enemy and the enemy had to flee.
So forbid the enemy to camp out in your mind – use scripture. The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness by the devil is recorded in Matthew 4:1-11, it’s recorded in Mark 1:12-13, and in Luke 4. The Bible says that Jesus
was in all points tempted like we are and yet he was without sin
I want you to know Jesus’ attitude toward the Word of God and how He used the word to overcome Satan’s temptations in the wilderness.
The first thing He did was — He accepted the authority of the Word of God and listened.
Men and women, this discussion that we’re having about male and female – you can go back to the Word of God. God has already addressed it in His Word. When Satan tempted Jesus – His immediate reaction was to say – it is written. So when someone challenges it, you can say – it is written. I created the male and female in my image.
You see Jesus decision to quote the Word of God shows that He totally accepted the authority of the Scriptures. Ad the Bible is our authority too – Why? Because it comes from God, right? 2 Timothy 3:16
All Scripture is breathed out by God
It’s been given to us out of the inspiration of the Holy Spirit given to men who were inspired to write it by God. The Bible says in John 17:17 that God’s Word is the truth. And I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again – we are living in incredible times right now. We really are. An incredible deception has fallen over our world like a cold wet blanket.
Are you guys watching what’s going on in China? For goodness sake. The church in China is being terribly persecuted and I read a letter that one of the pastors wrote that sounded very much like a Pauline epistle the other day. Talking about what a privilege it is to suffer for the Lord.
You see those guys get what we need to understand – this world is not our home. And so when we take a stand we do it for the Lord. We do it for the Lord. There is such a thing as truth. The Bible says there is such a thing as truth. God is truth. Jesus is truth.
The Bible said, Jesus said:
I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus is truth. God’s Word is truth and we want to teach our children that truth exists.
The second thing you’ll notice about Jesus is that he taught that everything that God said is important. And I’m noticing a lot of Christians in the culture right now -some of the things we think that God said are important and some of them – maybe not so much. I can’t get her to take it or leave it.
But Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 8:3 – Man shall not live by bread alone. But every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’
That was Jesus in Matthew 4 quoting Deuteronomy 8:3. So which are the words of God should we live by? Jesus said every word, every word – applies to us. We’ve got to learn to pay attention to all of God’s words and to understand God’s will for only one who does His will can please Him, according to Matthew 7. Jesus was teaching that everything that God says was important.
We don’t get to cherry pick. That’s why I’m so frustrated with so many so-called Christian authors, and bloggers, and speakers right now who are giving us a lot of emotion and a lot of feel-good Christianity. But it’s not based in the Word of God.
Everything that we do as believers should be based in and founded on the Word of God.
You see Jesus also understood the power of the Word of God and He used as a weapon against Satan, right? You guys remember this when Jesus was tempted by the devil. He didn’t try to use psychology, or deceit, or human reasoning, or a worldly method. No, He quoted God’s Word over and over again – It is written, it is written, it is written.
And once we see Jesus do this. who can doubt that using God’s Word is a wise thing for us to do as well? You see, the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit, according to Ephesians 6. It’s living and powerful according to Hebrews 4. So let’s use it and quote it when the devil tempts us. And you know what is a temptation of the devil right now? — that we would abandon the basic truth of our own human biology. I can’t even believe I’m saying that.
So when you’re tempted to start doubting your own sanity – Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe there are 53 genders. Maybe this is wrong, maybe that’s wrong. Quote the Word of God. It is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword. The Bible said is able to cut through all the lies of the culture and get to the heart of the issue.
Use it, quote it, live by it, depend on it. That is God’s Word for you. It’s His heart for you. If you want to win the battle for your mind, it starts with declaring what you know is true. It starts with saying – I know that there is such a thing as truth and God defines it.
And God defines it. We can win the battle for our mind. And listen, men and women, If you want your children to have a fighting chance in this battle they need to see you fighting it on your knees. They need to see you walking in right relationship with the Lord. They need to see that it matters to you.
So I guess that’s where I’m going to end this podcast today. I’m to ask you a question:
Does it matter to you? Because according to God’s Word it should matter. It should matter. Remember that the battle for your heart and the battle for the hearts of your children will be lost or won in their minds. That’s where the battle — all eyes are on the human mind right now and how easily we can be deceived – the enemy knows how easily deceived we are. And so this is an all-out assault against the truth of the Word of God aimed at anyone who would dare to stand up for what God says is right. And I want to encourage you to do that today. The Bible says in Isaiah 55:8-9
8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, says the Lord.
9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Trust in God’s ability to be victorious. He knows what He’s doing, and ultimately the end of the day – we’re going home. Praise the Lord. We’re going home. This world is not my home. We are just passing through, amen! We’re just passing through.
So as you start to make plans for the new year and start thinking about what God wants to do in your life, this next year, and how He might lead you, and how He might guide you — can I just encourage you right now get on your knees before the Lord, and petition Him. The Lord of heaven’s armies is listening and He wants to help you win the battle for your mind.
I’m going to continue talking about this for the next couple of podcasts, and this is a great time. Also, we’ve taken this last week off at MomStrong International, this is a fantastic time to join us for the next study that we’re going to be doing – which I know that you’re going to love. We’re gonna be talking about Finding Balance using the priorities that God lays out for us in His word. We’re going to study what priorities mean. You see, God is highly committed to His own glory. He’s committed to wisdom. He’s generous. He’s a defender of the weak. He’s a God of order, He’s a God of love, He’s a God of salvation.
And when we learn to apply God’s priorities to our lives, and we understand the difference between opportunity and obligation, when we know what we labor for, and why we rest – we can find contentment. And that’s gonna be the theme for January study. It’s just two dollars a week. This is a great gift to give to somebody for the new year. You’ve got somebody who in your life that you wanted to grow in the Word this year? Study with them at MomStrong International.
I want to thank you guys for listening. If you would like to reach out to us you can shoot us an e-mail anytime at firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ve got a lot of things coming up this year. I want to encourage you back to my speaking schedule I’m going to be in Abilene, Texas in just a couple of weeks. And this is a great time to get tickets for that event and the very next weekend I’ll be in Coos Bay, Oregon for my one-day women’s event Miracle Worker, The Life Changing Power of Following Jesus.
Thanks for listening everybody and I’ll see you back here on Monday.
